Fusion: Part One

A/n: Hi everyone,

I know it's been a long time since I've really updated. I know. I've been in a writer's block for a long time that it placed me in an endless rut >_< so, I am posting some drabbles and one-shots as mini exercises to get back into writing. And so, I've been experimenting with different ideas. Suggestions are welcomed.

PS. STEVEN UNIVERSE 100% INFLUENCED.

Amber existed with one purpose in mind: grow up to become a true gemstone. Not just any gem, but a crystal gem dedicated to protecting the Earth.

Earth. Home. Her home.

It's all a mystery to her. Her guardians, her gem, her encounters with these monsters hellbent on destroying the city. There's a lot of things she doesn't understand, but the gems never answer her questions. The mysteries that plauged her at night, particularly when she's rejected by others because apparently she's too "weird". Weird in what way?

Well, according to the citizens of Beach City...

One, she is often mistaken as a "he". Okay, sure, perhaps she likes masculine concepts more than feminine ones...- short hair, caps, shorts, hoodies, sandals. What? She was raised by a bunch of dudes with supernatural gemstone powers and she rarely sees her mom, so don't freakin' judge her. Two, she carries something far more powerful than considered. No, she has not controlled her abilities just yet, but at least she can feel... dunno, something within her stomach, so the gemstone must be working. Anyways, rumors has it that she's some secret alien in disguise from Mars. Ridiculous, right? Finally, she cannot make friends. Why? She doesn't know, and at this point she already grew numb to the idea of making one...

It's a little lonesome, sometimes.

Annnnnnd then somehow Oh Sehun came along.

Honestly, Amber had no idea how they met, but honestly, this gem stuff made things much more complicated. Like, really complicated. Okay, so, her guardians pretty much warned her about the intentions of human beings. Although she herself is a human being- well, half of the human DNA, she is completely isolated from both gems and humans. Anyways, running an errand for the crystal gems quickly escalated into a gem fighting match with a corrupted gem monster and then a dude proceeded to walk into the fight like it was a casual stroll in the park. Like, seriously? Amber tried to warn at the guy about the monster, but before she had the chance the boy gotten snatched by the monster. Needless to say, the gems were busy and Amber had to figure out how to defeat it.

Think Amber, think!

Amber lunged for the broomstick lying idly besides the donut shop and swung at the monster. She couldn't manifest her weapon yet, but it didn't mean she was incapable to fight. It dodged, tentacles tightening around the screaming boy as it hissed.

Fight, dodge, attack.

Amber tried to imitate the moves Pearl used with his spear, and finally, the broom lodged itself in the monster's eye. It scream with such ferocity that Amber had to close her ears. With a loud boom! The monster exploded in thick smoke and its gem fell to the ground. Immediately, Amber snatched the gem and bubbled it before the monster had the chance to reform. "Are you okay?" she wasn't accustomed to human interaction with the exclusion of her mom, but whenever she was around humans Amber kept everything formal. The boy seemed a bit lanky, pale, a teenager of sorts. How old? Not sure, maybe fifteen or sixteen... "Um, yeah. W-what was that?" he laid there completely stunned as his chest heaved erratically, eyes wide and strickened with fear. Obviously the dude gotten spooked by the entire ordeal. "Corrupted gem. They like to hang around the region." Amber explained as she held her hand out to him.

Silence. Then reluctance.

What? Is he afraid of me? Amber couldn't deny the sudden pang inside her chest at the thought. However, a few seconds later she felt his hand wrap around hers. She pulled him up and then noticed the massive height difference. Wow, this guy is definitely tall!

"...Thanks..."

"No problem. You must be new here?" patrol with the crystal gems can be a fun, yet somewhat tedious task. About three to four times out of the week to ensure the safety of Beach City and its citizens, but she never seen him before during her patrol. The boy looked seemingly nervous, "Errm, yeah." He muttered, "We moved here a few days ago due to my dad's job...so..." Ah, so that's why. Amber nodded and shook his hand, "Cool! Welcome to Beach City! It's nice to meet you. Super sorry about the monster, but my name is Amber and I am a crystal gem!" okay, she couldn't help it. It been a long time since Beach City had any tourists or new neighbors and it's refreshing to meet new people. Yes, yes, Pearl warned her about the dangers of humans but they are so fascinating.

The boy tilted his head, "A... a what?"

Amber gasped. "Dude, you never heard of the crystal gems?"

"Um, no. Are those monsters infesting this place?" how can he not know about Beach City? Amber snatched the boy's hand and yanked him towards her.

"H-hey! Don't touch me-"

"Dude, chill! I'm showing you around the place. What's your name, by the way?" after much coaxing the boy finally told his name.

Oh Sehun.

Oh Sehun, born and raised in Seoul, the provenance of South Korea. An older brother, a workaholic of a father and a prestigious mother. Age: sixteen and six months old with an attitude of a miserable thirty year old. Honestly, moving from place to place can take its toll on a growing boy like himself. His father's job as an engineer director requires constant relocation, so Sehun never gotten the chance to make friends at any of the schools. Whenever he did make friends it never lasted due to a sudden notice from his father to simply pack up and prepare to leave.

It hurts, honestly.

Regardless, the Oh family moved to Beach City, a small regional area on Juju Island. It's somewhat odd adapting to a small town from the outskirts of a busy sleepless city, but Sehun is certain they'll relocate within the latter months. Anyways, besides the constant isolation and loneliness, it's pretty relaxing here on Beach City. Lots of sand, and the neighbors were pretty friendly. Everything seemed nice. Until he saw that abomination of a creature wrapping its arms around his waistline. Jesus christ! What the absolutely fu- "ahhh!" Sehun dropped his cellphone in horror when he found himself hanging in the air, gasping and shrieking at that thing. "I'll save you!" he didn't care who saved him, but he immediately retracts his statement.

This place is absolute hell!

It felt like endless of minutes to hours, but finally, the tentacle that had him deadlocked in his position disappeared and Sehun fell to the ground with a loud thud. Ow. Sehun groaned, eyes narrowed as he tried to see through the blackened fog. "Are you okay?" he gazed at the boy standing before him and frowned. How on Earth can this guy be so calm about this? A freaking creature just appeared out of nowhere! Sehun couldn't help but to simply stare at him. After his internal flight-or-fight mechanism canceled within his brain, Sehun reluctantly grabbed the boy's hand.

"...Thanks..." He muttered.

The boy then proceeded to tell him that seeing those damned creatures is 100% normal. Sehun couldn't help but to scoff. Normal? This is total lunacy! Then this boy snatched him by the hand and Sehun snapped, "H-hey! Don't touch me!" he hissed at the boy, only to be silenced by his constant talking. Dear god, what did his family bring themselves into? Hope they leave within the next month!

Amber likes to state she made a new friend; however, Sehun don't really consider her as one. What are they, really? Acquaint... something. C'mon, she showed him around town and the purpose of the crystal gem, yet he doesn't believe her at all! "Amber Josephine Universe! You better be explaining why you didn't send those energized star beams to the Prosperity Palace. Did you know what happened?!" the girl freezed as the all-too-familiar voice penetrated the air. Crap! She forgotten all about it! Oh universe I am in so much trouble! She winced when Pearl's footsteps echoed across the beach, "The entire palace collapsed! Everything sacred inside the palace shattered due to the lack of energy! Where were you when we-...Amber, who is this?" they turned to find a tall, elegant and yet, petite man stumbling in shock.

"I'm so sorry Pearl-"

"Are my precious eyes deceiving me? Amber Universe! That is a human boy. We had this discussion a few weeks ago about taking precautions with these human beings!"

"I know but-"

"But nothing! You are in much trouble young lady!"

"L-lady?" Amber glanced at Sehun who quickly distanced himself from her. Great, now he thinks I'm a weirdo, too, huh? "okay, what the heck is going on here? This is overwhelming me. Amber, you're a girl? I should've expected it by your name, but is this your dad or...?" He thumbed at Pearl who simply gasped at his words. "Dad? Galaxies, no! I am the overseer of her wellbeing and guardian. I am Pearl, crystal gem and guardian of Beach City. Why a mere human being like yourself is around Amber?"

"Look, she just saved my like an hour ago and wanted to show me around the area. Cut her some slack." Sehun snapped.

"Slack?" Pearl scoffed, "She didn't even complete the mission she was assigned to do, and now an entire civilization worth centuries of precious material is completely destroyed! Amber, this is why we don't allow you to fully go on missions because you are not prepared to tackle serious situations."

Amber flared up in fury. "I am totally responsible! I just want to have some fun so what's wrong with that? You know we can use the reversal vortex clock to undo the disaster! And Sehun isn't some corrupted gem so I am allowed to make friends..." The two continued to argue while Sehun stood there idly in awkwardness. At this point, Amber then screamed something at Pearl before taking out something ridiculously bright- bright enough to probably blind someone, threw it to the ground and ran crying. Pearl loudly sighed as he pinch the edge of his ridiculously long nose. Sehun watched the palish white man snatch the bright item before it evaporated into the air.

...Okay, this is the most weirdest situation ever.

Sehun considered forgetting this entire experience and just go home, but somehow he inadvertently found himself in the girl's presence once more. There she sat, curled up and bawling her eyes out behind a bush. Now, Sehun doesn't consider himself much of a people person, let alone a empathic counselor, but walking away from a crying girl would seem pretty dickish, wouldn't it? "uh," Sehun cough, capturing the girl's attention.

"What do you want?" wow, a little rude much? Sehun frowned as he continued staring at the girl, "Are you... okay?" he asked ever so carefully.

"Why would I be? I can't even do the basic stuff as a crystal gem. I can't even make friends without Pearl breathing down my neck!" Sehun nearly went cross-eyed when the girl stood in front of him. She then went on ranting about crystal gems and Pearl and- okay, cannot compute anything anymore. "I- Amber, I can't understand. Stop."

"Huh?"

"Look, I don't understand anything, but I know what it's like to feel lonely and without friends." He felt his cheeks getting warmer the further he spoke, "It . Thanks for... errm, showing me around and stuff." He watched Amber's eyes light up in total surprise and before Sehun knew it he felt two small arms wrap around him rather tightly. Where's common courtesy? Do these people understand basic manners? "Does that mean we're now friends? I hope to the stars we are!" Sehun nearly squealed in fear as he felt his feet dangling off the ground and ribs tightening.

"O-okay! Just put me down!" Sehun gasped.

And that's how their friendship began

As of now, it is approximately six months, eleven days, fifteen hours, forty minutes and thirty-two seconds since they met. Sehun was certain after the second month he would be gone from this cursed place by now, but unfortunately, his father is apparently contracted to remain here for at least a year. Whether it's a curse or blessing, Sehun adapted to his environment rather quickly. Although, he really just can't fathom how seeing these... things is apparently normal for everyone else. Even for his family, seeing these monsters scared the living daylights out of them! And yet there was Amber and her crew, battling and destroying those things within a matter of minutes. Of course, Sehun wouldn't admit it, but it is kind of cool to see such profound thing.

And then... the pestering. Should he call it pestering? Yes. Whenever that girl saw him she immediately hugged him and bugged the crap outta him. Even when going to his new school which kind of by the way. Anyways, Amber would wait outside the gate for him! Come on, does that girl not understand space? Gathering from her home life seemingly not...

Overtime, he gotten over it and adjusted to the insufferable girl. This girl who he occasionally nicknames, "Liu". Amber doesn't seem to mind, in fact, she seems to love it.

Are they friends? Guess so.

About three times out of the week Sehun witness those monsters lurking around, and honestly, he felt less fear the more he hung around that girl. Not sure if it's apart of her crystal gem status, but Amber is... well, cool.

Annnnnnnd then that happened.

Amber couldn't exactly explain her powers. Again, it's apart of this mystery everyone seems to be so vague apart. She knew very little about her father, her history and purpose of the crystal gems. Heck, she finally managed to coax Pearl and Garnet into having Sehun as her friend! However, Sehun didn't exactly respond well to the idea of being around the crystal gems. However, Sehun didn't necessarily reject her, he just never liked the whole corrupted gem aspect. Of course, Amber herself understood little about these things except that they're bad and suppose to be defeated, but still...

Which now begs the answer.

Fusion.

She only saw Pearl and Amethyst fusion a few times before. Basically repeated from Pearl, fusion is some sacred method of two beings merging into one person. Bigger, stronger, faster, an amalgam of two distinct personas into one whole personality. Regardless, Amber never really considered to fuse...really. It is was an accident! Heck, she didn't even know it was possible to even...

I-it doesn't matter now.

A few moments ago she and Sehun somehow just... they...- why? Okay, Amber admits that she's a little scared. Heck, Sehun...

"Sehun?" Amber tried to call out for him, but she watched in shock as the boy recoiled away from her.

"Sehun-"

"S-stay away." He looked more than terrified, moreso scared out of his wits. Amber couldn't help but to whine when the boy continued to back away from her. What does this mean? Will they cease to be friends now? Amber furrowed her eyebrows as she stood, "Sehun, I- I didn't expect for this to happen! Honestly, I didn't know... I..." A second later, and Sehun completely disappeared from her vision.

.

Sadness. Total, utter saddness.

Depression and Amber Universe never mixed well. She considered herself as too cheerful to be bogged down with negative emotions for long periods of time. However, she hasn't receive a text from Sehun in over a week and it's all her fault. She saw the fear in those eyes, the hesitancy and uncertainty radiating from his aura.

She never realized how much this affected her.

"Amber."

"Hm?" Amber remained covered underneath her bed covers. She rarely exited her room with the exception of food and bathroom purposes only.  Garnet sat on the edge of her bed with a look of solemn grimness, "Would you like to explain what happened?" after that horrible night Amber rushed inside her room with little explaination. It's only bound to occur some answers for her actions. The girl continued to bury herself beneath her pillows, but Garnet eventually removed the pillows from her face.

"Amber, does this relate to your friend Sehun?" he quietly asked.

Amber swallowed, "Yeah," the images still haunts her. What if I'm considered some freak? Then no one will like me... "I- Garnet, I- well, we fused."

"Fused?" by his awed exxpression Garnet seemed to be in shock, "Yes." Amber sighed.

"Well, why are you sad? That is a new profound experience that leads to endless possibilities!"

"Because we never anticipated it. Garnet, it just happened and now Sehun completely avoids me and I don't know what else to do! It's all my fault and..." Amber buried her face into the palms of her hands. If only she was a little careful then maybe this would've never happened and they would still remain friends. A thick hand grabbed her shoulder, causing the girl to look up in hopelessness, "Amber, do not blame this on yourself. The first concept of fusion is understanding relationships, and frankly speaking, Sehun is your first friend and likewise for him... you began to care deeply with the interest of progressing your friendship, and I'd argue it must be the same for him albeit subtle. Of course, for a mere human being like Sehun, he does not understand the gravity of gems like us, but that does not mean he is unable to try. Amber, do not be afraid of who you are nor fear the possibly of intimacy." Amber giggled when Garnet kissed her on the check before standing up, "I believe if Sehun is a genuine friend, then he will not reject you."

"But he has been avoiding me..."

"Relax Amber, and try again."

And so, Amber did.

She waited outside the gate from the high school. Around four o'clock she saw a tall lanky boy with a grey hoodie and face buried within his phone. "Sehun!" Amber waved, catching the boy completely off guard. Then, she watched as the boy swiftly turned around.

"Sehun, please talked to me!" Amber ran towards him, heart breaking slowly as the boy continued to walk away. She didn't care if bystanders stared at her. She didn't care what people thought. She didn't.

"SEHUN!"

"What?" Sehun seethed, anger completely written across his face. Amber wanted to cower, but this time she didn't. "Why are you avoiding me? Because we fused?" Amber demanded. She wanted answers. She was tired of this endlelss chasing. However, after a minute of staring into Sehun's cold, unceasing eyes that held nothing but anger. Why is he so angry at her? His lips were tight and curved downward. A second later Sehun scoffed at her.

"Honestly, what the hell are you?"

"W-what do you mean?"

"Amber, ever since I've moved here, weird stuff been happening and I'm not sure how to handle it. I mean for god's sake! You expect me to be casual knowing my family could die at any freakin' second and you guys simply show up to defeat whatever thing attacking my family? Okay, sure, but what are you? You expect me to be okay after that? I mean, I wasn't even myself. What if I somehow die in the midst of hanging out with you? What if I turn into something that I'm not? You can't expect me to just run along with this not knowing what I'm bringing myself into."

"I... I'm sorry, Sehun." What else is she suppose to say? Amber frowned and snatched his arm before the boy had the chance to leave again.

"Just hear me out, please?"

"One minute."

Amber backed away with a sigh. "Sehun, I really don't know what I am. I don't know where I belong, nor where I fit. I am a crystal gem, but I cannot relate to my guardians because I haven't experienced what they have...- Sehun, I never had friends before, I never went to school, and I don't even know where I came from. I'm sorry you had to get involved with my mess. I didn't want you to be hurt or scared in anyway, I just... really wanted friends and I didn't want to lose you. It's so lonely sometimes, and... I'm sorry for what happened between us. I can't control it, you know? My gem, at least not yet, but please don't be afraid of me. I won't ever hurt you, Sehun."

"..." Amber could feel her heart thudding faster as Sehun continued to gaze at her with those steely stoned eyes.

After a long stretch of silence, Sehun released a long sigh.

"Okay."

That was all she needed.
