min garam was the bright rays of sunshine that came after copious amounts of dark, heavy rain. a happy boy, friendly, light-hearted and charming, with a smile brighter than the sun. he enjoyed even the smallest things in life and worked hard to achieve his dream of becoming a kpop idol, standing on the same stage as his idols.

 

emphasis on the "was". this was the min garam of the past.

 

min garam is a textbook introvert. he gains energy through time spent alone, is introversive and seemingly socially detached, walking down the hallways of prism entertainment with a face that screams indifference or grumpiness, with his airpods blasting a loud tune from his phone to accompany his detachment, most likely an n-igma song. there's a reason why he's called grumpy cat, you know.

 

emphasis on the "is". this is the min garam of the present.

 

the devil works hard but min garam of the present works harder, especially if it means he'll be rewarded with everything he has ever wished for at the end, which isn't much really, a stable life while following his dreams, solid friendship and a successful group that's treated equally. laziness is not a word that can be associated with min garam, neither of the past nor of the present, and he makes that known to everybody by his skills and the way he presents himself on stage, singing his parts with no voice cracks nor wavers while executing the dance the best way he could. if something needs to be done, it will be done and he will make sure of that.

 

there's a common misconception around hardworking and ambitious people like garam, and that is that they're willing to commit malicious deeds and unorthodox acts in order to achieve their goals. that is not the case at all for min garam. call him traditional by all means, but he'll even engage in a good ol' victorian fashioned duel if that's what it takes. all under fair conditions of course. he's not a cheater, nor a liar, he has no time for any of those. when he has been treated unfairly by other people before, it would only make him a hypocrite if he were to treat others unfairly, right? especially in an industry where every connection, good or bad, can be of use to him in the future.

 

an old saying, mostly and mistakenly attributed to sun tzu, goes: "if you wait by the river long enough, the bodies of your enemies will float by." and this is a saying garam believes strongly in. everyone can interpret this saying differently due to how their thoughts flow and garam interprets it as patience. he strongly believes in karma and that every action a person takes will return to them. min garam walks confidently on the road that leads to his goals, obstacles and all, not letting hype and pressure dissuade him from his mission. he knows that as long as he stays focused on what he does well enough, the obstacles will crumble beneath his feet and soon, there will be nothing in the way between him and his goal.

 

while garam pays a good attention to detail, especially when it comes to small details in choreographies, he's also blessed with the unique ability to see the bigger picture. the best way this can be explained is what an arm or leg alignment at a specific part should precisely be and how it should look like for every member, suited to their proportions and flexibility levels and the group's overall formation so they all look robotically in sync, akin to the likes of loona, txt and ateez for 4th gen, seventeen, verivery and golden child for 3rd gen, and infinite and shinee for 2nd gen. garam is, similar to most of the members of vesper, a savage. he's witty, has great sense of timing and going hand-in-hand with his attention to detail, knows where to hit it that hurts. so people who are at the receiving end of his roasting are often left speechless. sarcasm and sass are often pointed out as garam's points of expertise, described as his second language with the way it drips venomously down his tongue, coating itself in almost every word spoken by him.

 

another thing people may attribute with min garam is that he's always genuine and honest in whatever he does, says or expresses. and while some people appreciate that side of him, some people hate it, because they believe he's "too honest". which isn't wrong either. garam's honesty can get brutal at times and this may leave a bad taste in people's mouths. sugarcoating words is another thing that is not in his dictionary, he'll tell things as they are. but, isn't being honest better than lying? that's what garam believes at least.

 

as explained before, if something needs to be done, it will be done and garam will make sure of that. you cannot convince him otherwise, you're better off arguing with a brick wall. he has a way of doing things and this has always been the way he does it, and the way he tries to justify his actions ("because i want it to be that way!") sometimes makes him come across as a child throwing a temper tantrum. at times, it can be painted as a positive aspect. it shows his discipline in life, his willfulness and determination. but, it is also one of his downfalls. because there are times where he's wrong. he's not prideful, insecure nor in denial when it is proven that he is, in fact, wrong, he will admit it. he just finds it hard to apologize. will he apologize? sometime down the line, yes. verbally? no, even though his love language is words of affirmation. then how? through his actions. he waits until the air dissipates and the whole thing blows over, and then brings you a thing you off-handedly mentioned you liked only once a long time ago. and this is his way of apologizing and admitting that he was in the wrong this whole time.

 

another downfall, garam is vindictive and resentful. he has good memory and will forgive, but never forget. whether you're in his good or bad books, he'll remind you of the things that went down between you and him years ago, for different purposes. if you're on his good side, he'll only remind you of it to poke fun at and hopefully cringe at your past selves together. if you're on his bad side, he'll word his sentences in such a way that it'll leave its' mark on your mind, his gaze reminding you painfully of those times when it reaches yours. his good memory also works when he's roasting people, he brings up things from years ago that people may have forgotten about or repressed deep into their subconscious, enough to send them into a frenzy of cringe as those memories flood back.

 

garam doesn't really enjoy sharing parts of his own life unless it's with someone extremely close to him. even then, he'll leave some parts out and contort the story into what he wants the person listening to believe. he's closed off, prefers keeping his own issues to himself and is very cautious about who he lets in, especially if they are someone who knows who min garam of the past was.

 

with the way he has been painted, it may make people wonder… is the min garam of the past truly lost? the answer is no. the min garam of the past is not lost forever. he's still there, in the gaze that may be cold at first but softens over time as he gets to know you. he's in the smallest things he remembers about you. he's in the smile that truly reaches his eyes when a topic he's passionate about is mentioned. he's in the way he stays back to help the members who are struggling with choreography and allows them to open up to him in their own way, ensuring them that he can be trusted with important secrets, that not a single word will escape him.

 

looking at the overall picture, the min garam of the past and the min garam of the present do come across as two different people. and that begs the question, who is the real min garam? the answer to that differs according to every people he ever came across in his life, just like how the saying he strongly believes in can be interpreted differently. and now, i would like to ask you, my dear reader. who do you think is the real min garam?

 

BACKGROUND.

the only son in a family of what would be two children, min garam was born on december 31, 2000, in the city of ilsan. he was dubbed as a new years' day miracle by his parents since they had been trying for a child ever since their wedding in 1996 but all of their attempts had been unsuccessful before him. and the follow-up had been even better, with a daughter named min gaeul a few months later.

 

garam and gaeul's childhood was pretty normal, with both of their parents working office jobs and making enough money to send their children to good schools and go on vacations. they were inseparable, and basically grew up together since they were close in age as well. even for extracurriculars, they picked similar activities, with garam picking piano and gaeul picking guitar. they were in love with music, and the way their faces shone when they practiced was proof of that.

 

another hobby the min siblings had in common was watching music shows on tv with their father after finishing their homework. and one day, as they were doing exactly that, they came across one program that had five guys that seemed way older than garam and gaeul, standing in a triangular formation, looking absolutely fantastic in their black leather outfits. needless to say, the siblings fell in love. they learned the group name later on, tvxq, and spent most of their free time after school and extracurriculars watching them perform on tv, their eyes bright and sparkly and their overly active minds filled with images of being like them, standing on stage, the audience cheering for them.

 

one night in mid-2013, the siblings awoke to the sound of the phone going off, his mother's hushed soprano voice talking and a loud "WHAT?". after that, they were immediately rushed out of their beds and dressed by their father while their mother kept talking frantically into the phone as she got dressed herself. they would find out later that their uncle, the husband of their mother's older sister, had passed away in a car accident. deciding that their sister/sister-in-law shouldn't be alone during a time like this, the siblings' parents made the decision that they'd be moving to live with her for a few months. except, they didn't tell their children where their aunt lived. their aunt had pursued her masters' degree in the united states of america and had met and married a man there, settling in lafayette, louisiana.

 

while the siblings were wary of the place first, they found that the suburbs that their aunt and uncle had lived in were filled with people like them, and they found themselves a good social circle in the school they attended even though they knew close to no english at the start. and as their english improved, they began integrating themselves more and more into their class, even making friends with kids who were of different ethnicities. and while they were looking up extracurriculars, they were introduced to dance.

 

dance opened up the doors of a whole new world for them, and it was a step closer to the dream the siblings had ever since that fateful day in 2008, standing on stage with the audience cheering for them, just like how they'd seen it happen to tvxq on stage. they soaked up everything their instructor taught them, and their instructor repaid them in the form of praise. and long before they knew it, the small dance team of a few people became their second family, and garam and gaeul became the hearts of the said team.

 

and then, after six months, came the time to return home. their aunt decided to move back to south korea with them, to live with her mother and father, which meant that the mins were returning with them. garam and gaeul were devastated, just as they had thought everything was going great, it was being taken away from them. while their friends and dance instructor were upset that they were leaving, it wasn't like they could do anything about it. their dance instructor, however, didn't want the talents of these two to go to waste, so she helped them look up dance studios in ilsan, finding one that would be on the same scale that they could easily attend after school.

 

after their return to ilsan in 2014, garam and gaeul's life went back to normal again. they attended school, went to dance, came back home and did their homework. wash, rinse and repeat. they weren't lonely either, their old childhood friends had learned about what happened and they didn't hold any resentment. it continued this way until 2016.

 

and this is where their stories split up.

 

one weekend, as he was out with his friends, garam was approached by a man while waiting in line at a coffee shop to order his friends' and his drinks after losing a game of rock, paper, scissors. the man told garam that he was working for an entertainment company, name not specified, and asked garam if he'd be willing to audition. garam answered yes, thinking that it'd be the same company as tvxq, his lifelong role models, and took the man's card in a haste as the orders had come out. his friends were ecstatic upon hearing about his encounter with the man and encouraged him to audition. and when he went home that day, garam took the card out of his pants' pocket to take a good look at it, to see if he could find the company name.

 

"mmo entertainment"

 

…what? that did not sound like the name of the company that tvxq was under. not at all. but it didn't matter. as long as he got to meet tvxq, any company would suffice. when he went to talk to his parents that day, garam was surprised to find out that his sister had been scouted as well, but by another company. when they told their parents, they were surprisingly very accepting, telling them that they'd known for a while that they wanted to be an idol.

 

"you looked at tvxq as if they created the entire universe and gave it all to you as a gift." they said and garam laughed, gaeul covering her face in embarrassment.

 

and so audition garam did, feeling so small under the gazes of the representatives that watched him as he performed tvxq's hug, his voice cracking a few times due to his nerves. however, the dance audition he did with b.a.p's warrior, one of his favorite dances of all time, made up for it. or at least, that's what he liked to think. apparently, the representatives thought the same, because when he got an email a few weeks later, it was anything but rejecting.

LIKES.

 all genres of dance!  he's most fascinated by ballet, even though it's the hardest for him to execute because the angles are a pain.

 animals!  he's a dog person even though he likes cats as well.

 coffee!  he needs to have at least one cup to function throughout the day. the caffeine keeps him going, he says. his go-to order is iced americano.

 crime shows!  he's a really big fan of criminal minds.

 debates!  him and jinhwa are usually the ones who are either starting the debates within the groups, or getting into debates in the background.

 fashion!  even though his style differs vastly from gaeul's, garam's sense of fashion is a mix of comfort and style and he thinks it suits him. gaeul, yeonji, yeojin and jinhwa are also giving him tips on how to look more presentable.

 food!  who doesn't? it can be warm and comforting, and it can also be sweet and indulging. it's the best of both worlds.

 memes!  his favorite meme is "squidward on a chair". put that in a try not to laugh challenge and he'll be the first one out.

 movies!  he loves true crime and action movies.

 music!  self-explanatory, he likes it so much he made it his life.

 ramen!  rumors say that vesper is actually a cult created to worship ramen, and garam doesn't fall short from it. while he prefers fresh noodles over instant, he wants to try all the instant noodles in the world, especially the ones from indonesia because he heard that they were really good.

 savory things!  he's a savory over sweets guy through and through, because both him and his sister have sensitive teeth, so too sweet things make their teeth hurt.

 winter!  snow, winter sports like skiing, snowboarding and skating, snowball fights, the winter olympics, christmas, he loves everything about winter.

DISLIKES.

 acephobia, biphobia, homophobia, transphobia, etc!  nope. nuh-uh. as a part of the lgbtq+ community himself, garam will not stand for the erasure of any orientation. he's literally the tiktok that goes like "hi, i just wanted to let you know that in this household, we do not support transphobia, homophobia, what's… what's another phobia? we don't like spiders either, spiders are ugly"

 bees!  he's allergic to them, so i think it's a good enough reason for him to dislike them.

 blood!  he's extremely squeamish, so even the sight of the slightest drop of blood will make him dizzy and nauseaous.

 caramel flavored things!  or too sweet things in general. as explained before, both garam and his sister gaeul have sensitive teeth, so too sweet things, including caramel, make their teeth hurt. if he ends up getting something from a coffee shop that has caramel in it and realizes that later, he usually passes it off to jinhwa or another member that likes sweet stuff.

 cigarette smoke!  he doesn't mind if members smoke, it's their own choice, but prefers not to be in their vicinity. thankfully majority of the members are understanding so they'll either go out to smoke or (if they're on a balcony) tell garam they're going to smoke so he can go back inside.

 cucumbers!  similar to monsta x' minhyuk, exo's baekhyun and somi, garam absolutely cannot eat cucumbers. he's not allergic but he absolutely cannot stand the smell and taste. another thing he can't eat, similarly because he can't stand the taste is cilantro. it tastes like soap to him.

 hospitals!  the fact that he needs to go there when something is wrong is enough for him to dislike it.

 mint chocolate!  garam doesn't like it simply because it has both peppermint and chocolate in it. once again, correlating it to his dislike of too sweet stuff. so, he's team #mintchocohater.

 people touching his face!  absolutely no reason behind it. he just doesn't like it and anyone who touches his face usually ends up with a finger jab to the side. only his sisters can touch his face without any repercussions. in the future though, he will gradually allow the vesper members to touch his face.

 sharp smells!  like plain hand sanitizer or disinfectant. the scented hand sanitizers are not too bad but a sharp smelling room is guaranteed to get a nose scrunch from him. thankfully fans find that adorable.

 small spaces!  garam is claustrophobic. while he doesn't freak out badly like how haejin does during a panic attack, he does have mild bouts of nervousness and has even thrown up once. he needs to have someone with him if he's going to take the elevator or ride in a small car.

 

HABITS.

 bottling in his feelings!  a bad habit he gained during his times as an encore member, because he felt like he couldn't connect with any of the members due to mmo's apparent favoritism towards him. he's trying to break this habit, but it's hard.

 carrying an epipen!  similar to jinhwa, garam also carries an epipen on him due to his allergies. unlike jinhwa though, garam is allergic to bees. both members have told the managers where their epipens are located and how to administer it properly. they both keep one on their person and a backup in their bag, and they also place the epipens in their bags in the medicine cabinet when at the dorm, with garam labelling his so that they don't get mixed up.

 nervous!  it's easy to tell when garam is nervous. he averts his gaze and fiddles with, literally, everything. his hair, his clothes, his fingers, everything.

 raising his eyebrows!  it's usually the giveaway that his mind is going to the gutter again, that he picked up an innuendo.

 scrunching his nose!  he used to wear glasses as a child and this was his way of fixing them, but he also started to do this involuntarily when he picks up unpleasant or sharp smells.

 "y'all"!  as he lived in lafayette when he was young, he learned english and picked up the lousiana dialect, and as a result, he has a habit of adding "y'all" to his sentences.

 

HOBBIES.

 drawing!  he mindlessly doodles on any piece of loose paper he can find when he's taking a break and whatnot.

 dancing!  he can be found mostly in the dance practice rooms, practicing one of their choreographers' choreographies or trying to come up with choreographies himself.

 eating!  his favorite foods are, in his words, "anything haejin hyung makes."

 listening to music!  he has a lot of playlists on spotify which are marked with his representative emoji. he separated them by genre and what he listens to depends on his mood.

 shopping!  he loves to go to stores, feel the material and check out different designs.

 taking photos!  he uses his phone mainly but definitely wants to invest in a good quality camera in the future.

 watching netflix shows!  his favorite shows are friends, the good place and modern family.

 working out!  he picked up working out after he joined prism entertainment, in order to keep up with the choreographies and improve his stamina.

 

FEARS.

 anaphylaxis!  once again, similar to jinhwa, garam's bee allergy is the reason of this fear. his allergy symptoms start showing within 5 minutes though, and usually consist of dizziness, nausea, low blood pressure and in the worst case scenario, constriction of the airways. his worst experience was his first ever time being stung by a bee in elementary school and it has stuck with him ever since.

 claustrophobia!  he doesn't know when this started, but garam has been claustrophobic since he was young. as mentioned before, while he doesn't freak out badly like how haejin does during a panic attack, he does have mild bouts of nervousness and has even thrown up once. he needs to have someone with him if he's going to take the elevator or ride in a small car.

 losing his sister!  his biggest fear. his sister, gaeul, is the most important person in this world to him. if he were to lose her, he simply wouldn't be able to recover.

 prism being biased towards him!  one of the few fears he has, really. it mainly has to do with the fact that he doesn't want the same thing that happened in encore to happen in vesper.

 

TALENTS.

 n-igma fanboy!  he's a big, haejin-biased n-ergy and knows all their songs, fanchants and dances. it's worth noting that he still listens to n-igma after haejin's departure, but he never truly stopped being a haejin fanboy, if the way his eyes sparkle when the vocalist does the smallest thing is a giveaway.

 

SOCIAL MEDIA.

 one!  after the disbandment of newgen, garam opened an instagram account under the username @min_gagaram. it was fairly empty save for the few photos and videos he had of himself practicing.

 two!  after debuting with encore, he continued to use his instagram, posting photos of himself and the other members and selcas with them as well. he archived them after encore's disbandment though.

 three!  upon debuting with vesper, garam uses the group's social media accounts until they're given the freedom to open their own instagram accounts. he's most active on vlive and instagram. his personal instagram feed after debuting with vesper is pretty much similar, selcas of him with encore members replacing themselves with selcas of him and vesper members, alongside photos of him working out and doing other things.

 hanja!  garam's name doesn't have a hanja because it's a native korean name, meaning "river".

 romance experience!  garam hasn't dated anyone, but he has had crushes on people with pure and sweet personalities, regardless of what they had or used to have in their pants, which is why he identifies as panual.

KIM SEOJOON (1999).　kim seojoon or lucian kim was a member of encore under the stage name "baram" and currently works as a producer in prism ent. under the handle "hurrycane". after encore's disbandment, seojoon decided to pursue his longterm dream of music production and applied to prism entertainment, providing some demos he had produced for encore that ended up staying in his computer. he was accepted as an associate producer and some of his demos were used for rendezvous b-sides. back in encore, he was closest to garam, due to both of them either being from or having spent time in louisiana, with garam having lived in lafayette and seojoon being from new orleans. so they spoke english to each other all the time and mostly recounted their childhood memories in louisiana, even though garam only lived there for a few months. garam would say seojoon was the person that helped him with improving his english and that seojoon would be the member he was closest to. but, they have drifted over time, with mmo's terrible management and always trying to push garam to the front and center. with seojoon being vesper's producer now, garam hopes to mend their friendship, as well as his friendship with the rest of the former encore members, but will seojoon be accepting? only time will tell.

TRAINEE LIFE.　bullet points for now, will elaborate later.

 2016!  garam is accepted into mmo entertainment. the survival show craze is going on at the time, with produce 101 releasing two seasons and a new show being in the works.

 2017!  produce 101 season 2 starts and ends. the top 11 are known as "wanna one" and two trainees from mmo entertainment, kang daniel and yoon jisung, are also a part of it, having ranked #1 and #8 respectively. wanna one debuts later and mnet sets the new survival show, "next level" in motion. garam appears on "next level" and ranks first place, making it to the final group, comprised of the top 10 members.

 2018 – 2019!  the project group, "newgen" debuts, promotes on music shows and disbands following the end of their exclusive contract.

 2019!  mmo hastily debuts garam in a five-member group called "encore" but the group disbands in the following months because mmo's favoritism of garam is obvious and it causes rifts between the members. garam is immediately scouted by prism entertainment afterwards, and he auditions, reuniting with his sister gaeul, who is now a member of rendezvous.

 2019 – 2021!  trains in prism entertainment and finally debuts with vesper, prism entertainment's first boy group.

 

MEDIA PRESENCE.　

while next level wasn't really that well-received compared to other survival shows that mnet was in charge of, like the produce series, garam's name was well-remembered by the fans, due to kang daniel and yoon jisung hyping him up when the introductions were shown. he didn't do that well during the first few evaluations and was often in the bottom half of rankings, but his dance performances, both for the dance evaluation and the mind round, and his quick thinking during the teamwork episode earned him constant ranks in the top 10.

 

by the end of the season, garam's stage presence had improved so much and him being chosen for the center position for his group's debut evaluation was the live proof of it all, with him ending up in 1st place and debuting in newgen, the project group, as the center. while newgen did good, it didn't receive the attention wanna one did, understandably so. still, they scored well on rankings and even managed to snag a first win with runaway, a song which garam took part in choreographing. newgen's disbandment song, shine, however, hit it big in south korea and overseas for the first chorus, for the addicting way yechan sang the lyrics and the shoot choreography, which went viral in south korea as the hammer dance. to this day, it's one of the most memorable songs of newgen.

 

encore, garam's second group, sadly didn't do as well due to mmo wanting the group to be "min garam and his backup dancers" for the lack of a better term. their debut song "let's get loud" did spark a reaction, yes, but once again, it was all due to garam and the group disbanded not even a year into their activities. vesper fans who watched produce x 101 and next level are bound to recognize him and jinhwa from the survival shows.

PAST EXPERIENCES.

 piano classes!  done as an extracurricular activity starting from when he was 6. quit lessons after 7 years because him and his family moved to the states.

 

 dance classes!  first enrolled in louisiana along with his sister in 2013 and quit the studio in louisiana after six months because him and his family moved back to south korea. his parents then signed him and gaeul up in another studio recommended by their dance teacher back in the states and garam continued classes there until his acceptance into mmo entertainment in 2016.

 

 next level!  garam participated in mnet's survival show next level as a contestant from mmo entertainment. he ended up ranking in 1st place and made it to the final lineup of project group newgen. to learn more about next level, click here!

 

 newgen!  garam was active as the main dancer, vocalist and center of newgen, the project group created by the top 10 contestants from the survival show next level from may, 2018 until their disbandment in may, 2019. to learn more about newgen, click here!

 

 encore!  after newgen's activities ended, garam immediately debuted in encore, a new boy group created by mmo entertainment, as the maknae, main dancer, vocalist, center and the face of the group in october 2019. however, they disbanded in november 2019, all having terminated their contracts with mmo entertainment. to learn more about encore, click here!

 

HEADLINES.

 former newgen member min garam to debut in new boy group vesper  as he was the center of a project group that was formed through an mnet survival show, it was a big deal when garam joined prism entertainment and this got a lot of mixed responses, mostly on the supportive side. prism entertainment confirmed it through releasing garam's introduction teaser on the same day.

 

CAREER ASPIRATIONS.

garam's main aspirations are for vesper to do well and for prism entertainment to treat them as a group, not as one member and his backup performers like how it was for him back in encore. he would never voice that second concern out of course. other than that, he really wants to take part in the choreography of at least three of vesper's title tracks, either by himself or with the beloved. and with jinhwa's egging also comes more… ambitious milestones, like becoming the 8th group to hold a concert at the seoul olympic stadium, after h.o.t., g.o.d, shinhwa, jyj, exo, bts, and nct dream and performing at coachella.
