hyunsung is very childlike at heart. he wants to believe the best will happen out of every situation, but everytime it doesn't he immediately assumes that it must be because of his own wrong-doing. growing up with very image-conscious parents made him hyperaware of everything he was doing, even making him so sensitive to other's emotions that he can sense the slightest shift in energy from those around him. hyunsung is very kind and caring though, he knows how hard it is to bear the weight of a burden, as he's beared many in his lifetime, so he tries to be that person that can listen and help to shoulder some of the struggles that others deal with. that being said, he tries so hard to be that person that he ends up bottling his own thoughts and feelings to make himself more palatable and useful for those he cares about. he's very much a perfectionist, even down to his moral compass, choosing to dwell on things he has done wrong in the past as a way of making sure it's never done again. hyunsung is the type of person to look at things very black and white, because when things are right and wrong it's easier to follow the rules. he doesn't like gray areas, they leave too much room for error or misinterpratation, and who knows if he'd even be smart enough to do it right, at least in his mind. he's able to de-stress and brain dump all of his troubles through his creative endeavors, whether that's painting, dancing, singing, whatever. he likes being creative as it's one of the few things that has a gray area but still has a basis of right and wrong.

BACKGROUND

park hyunsung was born into an upper-middle-class family. while his parents tried to groom his sister into a perfect young lady, they quickly realized she had too much spunk to actually follow their wishes. hyunsung was a more sensitive child and way more sensitive to the approval from his parents. for the first ten years of his life he was pushed to be a child prodigy of some sort. he excelled at piano so his parents homeschooled him so he could receive as much as 6 hours of intensive piano classes every day. he wasn't given much time to interact with other kids which never gave him the chance to see that the world didn't revolve solely around his parents. eventually at age 10 he experienced gifted kid burnout and started having anxiety attacks anytime he came near the piano. no matter how hard he practiced he felt like he'd never be perfect, and if he wasn't perfect than his parents would hate him, or at the very least be disappointed in him for the rest of his life. after his piano lessons stopped he began tagging along with his sister to her dance classes, which she then actually had to go to since her parents were there watching. they let him enroll, assuming that he'd get bored of it after a while and come back to his piano lessons. instead he found his inspiration again, he never realized how freeing it felt to move your entire body to express yourself. they reluctantly allowed him to enroll in dance, on the one agreement that he'd practice enough piano to get himself a scholarship into a good college. hyunsung still experienced anxiety about all the pressure put on his piano ability, but channeled that into his passion for dance. at age 15 he started auditioning to be a backing dancer for performers, landing his first gig as a back dancer for an up and coming idol group, bts. against the wishes of everyone in his family, hyunsung dropped out of high school to further his career, eventually transitioning to the trainee life to chase his idol dream two years after his sister's debut.

- has a siamese cat named angel who acts like a devil to everyone but him. she's been allowed to live with him at every dorm he's stayed in due to her esa certification. the only other person she tolerates is hyunjung, he suspects it's because they look similar.

PARK HYUNJUNG : sister

hyunjung is undoubtably hyunsung's role model. she never really cared about their parents' expectations of her, heck they knew that she didn't actually get into a private school and ran off to be an idol, but they knew they couldn't control her the same way they could with him. he wishes that she had come more during his time at home, sometimes even getting angry that she abandoned him, but ultimately he understands her reasons for doing the things she did and still loves her anyway. once he joins prism entertainment he tries to get a lot closer to her and does make some headway, but they're also fully grown with their own lives so it's not as smooth as it could've been if they'd known each other growing up.

  
ONLY1 & VANI:T : former groups

though his time with both groups was short, he much preferred his time with only1 over his time with vani:t. the only1 boys had something to bond over, and with their disbandment date being known from the beginning it almost gave them more of a reason to get closer. the boys of vani:t treated him like a cash grab, only talking to him on camera so they'd get their screentime. his time with vani:t was very lonely, he was often left alone during their downtime, the boys attitudes towards him flipping drastically on and off camera. even though they had trained together way before he had gone on the survival show, it was almost like they resented him for his success, even though they all knew no one would have paid attention to their debut otherwise. he reached out to the only1 boys and his sister a lot during his time with vani:t, hoping their schedules would cross just once so he could see a friendly, familiar face.

the thing that scares him about vesper is that he knows this is his last chance to be an idol, but that's all he knows how to do. sure he has dance, but if he fails again will anyone want him to teach them how to dance, or even dance backup for them? surely if three groups he's been in have disbanded, he's the common denominator that caused them to fail. hyunsung knows that since his sister's connection led him into the group he has to work twice if not three times as hard as the other vesper boys to prove his presence isn't purely nepotism based. he wants them to believe he's talented enough to be there, not just a pretty face to pull in people's attention. hyunsung also wants to feel that almost familial, sibling-like connection that rendezvous has, he imagines it must feel amazing to be able to know that if you failed, at least you failed together.

TRAINEE LIFE: after joining db media it became glaringly apparent to hyunsung that the idol world was about 10% talent and 90% looks. though he was a talented dancer with an excellent resume, the truth was he had only been casted for his looks. during his time competing on itboyz he was often voted to be center by his teammates due to his good looks. even at prism entertainment, his late arrival was attributed to being a visual member and not his skills or work ethic. he tried his best at every place he ended up to make friends, but more often than not he was categorized as being vain or y by other trainees simply because the company acknowledged his looks. he made friends a bit easier at prism, having his sister as a segway into the company, plus the male trainees were under strict instructions via hyunjung to be nice to him or else. he felt like he always had to work three times as hard as the other trainees to have his skills acknowledged, and sometimes he wishes he could wear a mask over his face so his worthiness could be judged only by his talent.

hyunsung gained a lot of attention for being a former backing dancer for bts, and therefore already had a lot of fans by the time itboyz aired. he was always shown as being very hardworking, though the focus seemed to be more on his good looks.

HEADLINES:
FORMER BTS BACKUP DANCER TO COMPETE ON ITBOYZ SURVIVAL SHOW
though he never thought he'd get so much attention for being a backing dancer, he was proven wrong after the media discovered he'd been a back dancer for bts. he never revealed it himself, so he's not sure who ended up bringing it to the media's attention. the bts boys ended up praising his dancing skills which also brought attention his way.

ONLY1'S HYUNSUNG RIGGED TO BE CENTER?
as with all survival shows by mnet at the time, only1 was not free of the rigging scandals. hyunsung had ranked in the top 7 the whole time but never grasped the 1st place position during the show, at least until the final episode. because of this, people assumed that he had been rigged into being the center so they wouldn't have a foreign member, yijun, as the center. truthfully, only1 was the only1 who hadn't been rigged (budum tss) because mnet didn't really do much with itboyz. it was a filler show to up their ratings while they were working on new things. he had been the center in the final debut concept stage, ranked at #2 during the previous episode, therefore it didn't take much to push him to the #1 spot.

ONLY1'S PARK HYUNSUNG TO DEBUT IN VANI:T
the news of his new group debuting just a month after only:1 disbanded did not sit right with most of the public. they were still mourning and to be honest, most only1 fans did not want to support vani:t as it hurt to see not only one of the members, but their center, being in a new group so soon. their debut was met with less than half the numbers that were projected, which wasn't great for db media, who had already gone way over budget just producing their debut mv. the boys were told if their next comeback didn't make up for their red numbers, the company would go bankrupt.

CAREER ASPIRATIONS: to be quite honest, hyunsung's dreams of being an idol died a long time ago. he hates all the expectations placed on him and all the scrutiny he faces for so much as breathing in the wrong direction. he still wants to dance, but being an idol isn't at all what he thought it would be. it's not as easy as his sister made it seem, and the constant criticism . his goal as of now is to finally make it as a group, just to prove that his presence in a group doesn't immediately qualify it for early disbandment. after vesper's disbandment, he plans to open a dance studio in his hometown and fade away from public life. he might come back to judge or mentor on a survival show or two in the future, but he feels his days as an idol should and will end with vesper.
