Prize Possession
What Once Was Lost...Kyuhyun and Heechul sat at the kitchen table, Kyuhyun drinking coffee and eating boxed cereal and Heechul drinking orange juice and munching on a bagel that he forced Kyuhyun to make for him. Kyuhyun, not being much of a morning person, sat there ignoring his cousin while eating. Heechul was too busy reading through his script to notice. It certainly seemed quiet in the house without Ryeowook in the kitchen. Kyuhyun wondered what time he would get up on his day off and if he’d leave for the day or stick around the house. He wouldn’t get paid until next week, so he couldn’t leave for that long, he assumed.
“I’m surprised Leeteuk isn’t up yet,” Kyuhyun mumbled.
“He probably is but he’s taking the opportunity to check his emails without us knowing,” Heechul informed him without looking up from his script.
“Well, we should force him to hang out with us today,” Kyuhyun said without having any idea what he should do with his cousins aside from talking with them. He didn’t make a habit of going out much.
Just then, they heard the back door being unlocked. Kyuhyun looked behind him at the door curiously, as Shindong had weekends off, and was surprised to see Yesung coming in through the door with his suitcase.
“You’re just getting in now?” questioned Kyuhyun, looking at his watch.
Yesung glanced over at the two cousins. “Yeah. I’m not late,” he reminded his boss.
“Yes, I know. But you were at the fair yesterday, so I know you didn’t sleep at your parents’ house,” he pointed out.
“Correct.”
“Where did you sleep last night?”
“My boyfriend’s house,” he said before heading up the stairs.
“Boyfriend?” Kyuhyun questioned loudly, looking over at his cousin, who was shocked enough to pop his head up and gave Kyuhyun a questioning look. They both jumped to their feet at the same time and raced up the stairs after Yesung, catching up to him as he reached the top of the second flight. “Who are you dating?”
“Is that really even your business?” Yesung asked, unlocking the door to his bedroom. “I already told you more than you need to know. It isn’t any of your business where I spend the night.”
“Yesung!” he said, exasperated, and grabbed onto his arm before he could walk into his room. “Please tell me that somehow you are talking about Min. I mean, …if it’s not, he’s going to be heartbroken.”
Yesung stopped and turned his head to look back at Kyuhyun. “Would you feel bad if it wasn’t him?”
Kyuhyun nodded.
“Quit your worrying then. I’m dating Minnie,” Yesung informed them.
“And sleeping with him, apparently,” Heechul added. “About ing time!”
Yesung rolled his eyes and moved to close the door but Kyuhyun stopped him. “Did you two go to the fair together yesterday?”
Yesung nodded. “But the idiots don’t know we spotted them.”
“Was it fun?”
“Am I a fair judge? I would have been happy no matter where I was just because I had Minnie with. There were rides, greasy and sugary foods, games, music, smelly animals, tons of people…everything I usually avoid but somehow I still managed to have a great time.”
Kyuhyun finally let Yesung close the door and turned to Heechul. “Are you thinking what I’m thinking?”
“I’ll get Leeteuk up and moving and get dressed.”
“Meet me downstairs in fifteen minutes,” Kyuhyun said as he watched Heechul rush down the hall and turn the corner to find his brother. Kyuhyun walked just a few steps further and pounded on the door. When he didn’t get an immediate answer, he knocked again.
“Wookie, get up!”
A sleepy Ryeowook finally opened the door, yawning.
“What are you up to today?”
“I was sleeping,” Ryeowook said groggily.
“Get dressed. You’re coming with me.”
“Where?”
“Just get dressed in outdoor clothing and come downstairs in fifteen minutes.”
“That isn’t much time.”
“You better hurry up then,” Kyuhyun said, walking away and heading upstairs to change. Would Ryeowook think it was strange to drag him along with his cousins? But after being overworked by Eunhyuk and Donghae the day before, certainly he deserved to get out for a little while and have some fun. And they were friends. Friends sometimes hang out together. And having an odd number of people was never a good idea since someone always felt left out. It was the best solution all around.
By the way Kyuhyun kept glaring through the rearview mirror at them, Ryeowook was beginning to think that Heechul was intentionally trying to piss his cousin off. He’d been polite enough to offer the eldest cousin the passenger seat but when Heechul sat down next to him in the back and spent the whole ride with his arm around Ryeowook, Kyuhyun appeared to grow more and more ticked off at his cousin. But nothing was actually said about it, so he couldn’t be sure that they hadn’t had an argument before he arrived downstairs. Whatever the reason for it, Kyuhyun’s cold looks unnerved him and he avoided looking that direction altogether.
“So, Yesung and Minnie,” Leeteuk said.
“What about them?” Ryeowook asked.
“They’re apparently dating. Yesung said he spent the night at Minnie’s house,” Heechul informed him. “He came dragging himself into the house shortly before we left.”
“Really?” Ryeowook asked excitedly.
“I didn’t think they’d ever get together,” Leeteuk admitted.
“Come on,” Heechul said, “they were a walking time bomb ready to explode at any moment. Two people attracted to one another for that long? Man, you just can’t fight that forever. Eventually two people that hot for one another are going to give in. It’s inevitable. I knew it was only a matter of time.”
“And you’re the expert on unrequited love? You know all about wanting someone you can’t have?” Leeteuk asked, almost sounding a little bitter about Heechul’s claim.
“No,” he shot back. “What did I just say? I’m the expert on not being able to control myself when I want someone, that’s the problem. Sometimes who I want isn’t someone I should have but I can’t help myself.”
“Like that married actress?” Kyuhyun asked.
Ryeowook looked to Heechul in surprise. “Her marriage was already in the toilet. She had a boyfriend on the side as well. I was just her boy toy on the set, that’s all,” he defended himself.
“Heechul is quite the Casanova with the ladies, Ryeowook,” Leeteuk explained.
“I used to be,” Heechul corrected him. “I’ve been changing my ways the last couple years, remember?”
“And now you’re an to everyone because you’re not getting laid enough,” Kyuhyun shot back at him.
“Look who the hell’s talking?” Heechul countered. He then rested his head on Ryeowook’s shoulder. “He’s so mean to me! Listen to him.”
Ryeowook smiled and pat Heechul’s head, amused at the cousins’ sibling rivalry—he just couldn’t view it as anything else at this point—and dared not look in Kyuhyun’s direction. The fair was in the next town over, having a larger population, and they had to park a short distance away because there were already so many people there, despite the early hour. The moment Heechul and Kyuhyun got out of the car, they put on sunglasses and hats to help conceal their identity. Kyuhyun looked inconspicuous enough, wearing plain blue jeans and a stripped t-shirt but Heechul was a bit more stylish and stood out from the small town look wearing yellow jeans, a bright red scarf over a white shirt, and a lightweight purple cardigan topped off with a fedora. Even Leeteuk shook his head when he first saw him. It was simply impossible for him to blend in anywhere.
“Ah, what a beautiful day!” Ryeowook said as he wandered a little from the car. There was just a slight chill in the air which mea
