Chapter 06
Fifty Shades of PinkWhat am I? Why, I’m a human of course. Is she trying to imply that I’m not?
“I-I’m not a vampire. I’m human.”
“I know that.” Ms Pink shakes her head, the look in her eyes spelling P-A-T-H-E-T-I-C. “The question is, what sort of human are you.”
“The normal kind?”
Ms Pink snorts. “What’s normal.”
“I don’t have any special powers. I’m just a student.”
“The mark on your hip says you’re not just a student.”
“What do you mean?”
“You really have no idea, do you.”
I shake my head, more clueless than a newborn. “Am I supposed to know something?”
Ms Pink raises the needle contraption containing my blood. “This will tell us what you really are.”
“My blood? Is this what you took it for?”
Ms Pink picks up her pink phone without answering my question and types something. Within seconds, the door opens and in walks a jaw-dropping, heart-stopping beauty looking regal in a woman’s power suit, complete with the blazer and all. She’s tall, slender and has beautiful eyes that remind me of the dolls that my father used to buy for me. Not surprisingly, pink is the colour of her blazer. I think I’m beginning to get to the point where the lack of pink would surprise me more than the presence of it.
“Ms Pink.”
The contraption containing my blood is handed over. “Test it. And Seo, bring me a blouse from our summer collection,” Ms Pink points to me, “in her size.”
The woman (or is she a vampire too?) nods and spins around on her heels, clicking out of the room with a brisk walk. What is she? Ms Pink’s personal assistant? She’s back before I can even process the on-goings with a white blouse that has pink hearts printed all over it. I can’t stop myself from cringing. This is so not my style!
“Thank you, Seo.”
Personal assistant Seo nods and leaves the room again, which means I’m left to fend off the advances of Ms Pink on my own—not that the PA would have been of any help to me.
“Take your blouse off. I’ve tolerated your unpinkly presence long enough.”
I shake my head. “I don’t want to take off my blouse. And I don’t wanna wear the hearts.”
Ms Pink’s nostrils flare and the pink blazes in her eyes. “This,” she shakes the full-of-pink-hearts blouse at me, “is the most popular blouse this summer. The most popular girl groups wear them. The President has worn it to global summits. You,” she points an intimidating finger at me, “stupid human, are in no position to argue with me right now. If you don’t want to be ripped of your blouse, you will take it off.”
I gulp like cartoon characters do when they’re in serious trouble. There is no doubt Ms Pink is capable of carrying out her threats. There’s no other way. I have to obey. Ms Pink hands me the hearty blouse and glares at me until the last button is done.
“Now don’t you look so much better.”
I don’t think so but I nod anyway. “May I go now?”
Ms Pink nods and a rush of relief floods my innards. “I’m done with you for the moment. You may return home. But remember, you’ve signed the NDC. If you tell anyone about anything you’ve seen or heard, your heart will cease to beat.”
“M-My heart will s-stop?” I am horrified.
“That’s what I said.”
“I knew it. I should have read the fine print before signing it,” I groan.
“Fine print or not, you would’ve had to sign it anyway. There’s no way I’m letting you walk away without insurance of your silence.”
“What kind of inhumane contract is this? Instant death—it’s too severe!”
