Chapter 4

Transparent

Sunggyu paced back and forth in his room quietly. Should he unlock the window and risk dying or should he keep it locked an inform someone? He was torn; his body reacted to the excitement and fear simultaneously while his mind was strongly against doing anything rash. He ruffled his hair in annoyance. Why hadn't the training school prepare him for something like this? Sunggyu finished pacing the room and turned to look at the clock. He had been up for more than twenty minutes and had not washed up for the day yet. Sighing, he walked to the bathroom. He'd have to save this inner debate for later.

Howon was the first to the dinner table. He had major bedhead and was still in his pajamas – which were bright pink pants with flowers and a black shirt with the sleeves cut low enough to show his torso underneath. Sunggyu greeted him politely and served him his breakfast of a rolled omelette and a glass of milk. Howon yawned and accepted the food graciously. The Transparent found out over the coarse of a few days that his master wasn't a morning person. Sunggyu wouldn't be either if it wasn't for the training.

"You cook better than my mom." Howon said after a few bites. "Thanks as always, Gyu." He smiled. Sunggyu bowed and returned to the kitchen to plate Mr. and Mrs. Lee's breakfast before they came walking into the room. He felt a little awkward because he still wasn't used to being called anything but Sunggyu. It wasn't like the guards at Carol bothered with nicknames.

Cleaning that house had been hard on the Transparent that day. His inner struggle had bugged him without rest unless he interacted with the Lees. Howon took him out to the garden again, this time to the sheal side. There, Sunggyu saw massive fields of nothing other than the plant that was made into that uncomfortable cream Mrs. Lee used on him. The woman had been picking some more when they arrived and Sunggyu decided to help her – he was their Transparent after all. Howon watched in the shade as Sunggyu removed his gloves and immediately bent over to start collecting the stalks. Mrs. Lee frowned when she saw her son sitting on a bench in the shade instead of helping out too.

"What do you think you're doing?" She said, putting her hands on her hips. Howon smiled and shrugged before continuing to observe the Transparent's rump. "Come on, help out. You haven't gotten any exercise all week." Mrs. Lee stated, waving him over. Sighing, he did what he was told and joined the two harvesting sheal. The sun was blazing down on their backs and he soon broke out into a sweat. Howon glanced over to Sunggyu and groaned. The Transparent had double the amount of clothing on but hadn't shed a single drop of sweat at all. He wasn't even breathing hard from all the work like Howon and Mrs. Lee were. That man was definitely not human.

After collecting enough sheal to fill Mrs. Lee's basket, they all went inside for a cool treat. Sunggyu had frozen a bag of strawberries a couple days earlier so they made smoothies out of them. Howon offered Mr. Lee a cup when he stumbled across the trio lounging on the couches. He, of course, declined and exited the house shortly after – saying he had a place to be for work and wouldn't come home until tomorrow. The two remaining Lee's bid him goodbye and Sunggyu bowed deeply as his master closed the front door behind him.

"Where is father going?" Howon asked, looking to his mom for answers. She made a humming noise in thought.

"I think he mentioned that he was called in to discuss recent Unholy activity. I heard last night, a few of them went around kidnapping Transparents." She said, putting a finger to her chin as if she was trying to recall more information.

"Wow, that's bad. At least Gy- Sunggyu wasn't taken." Howon commented. The said Transparent noticed that both Lees were staring at him curiously. Howon looked as if he wanted to ask something but stopped himself last minute.

"I noticed you locked all the windows yesterday, Sunggyu." Mrs. Lee said, breaking a moment of silence. Sunggyu nodded in confirmation. "Did a rebel try to kidnap you last night?" She pushed further into the topic. The Transparent hesitated. Should he tell them like the other Transparents did? He really should, it would keep him safe anyway.

"No." He finally said. He could see the two visibly relax in their seats. Sunggyu had lied. For the first time in his life, he had lied. He wasn't sure why he did; maybe he felt like he could handle the situation on his own, maybe he somehow wanted to be kidnapped. Either way, he had kept the note on his window a secret from the Lees. Howon got up from the couch and stretched.

"I'm going to go take a shower. I feel gross from all the sweat." He said before exiting the room. Sunggyu was left with Mrs. Lee, who was sipping her smoothie calmly.

"So," She started, "Do you want to be my hamster again?" She smiled, putting her cup down on the coffee table. Sunggyu nodded and followed her up the stairs to the fashion room numbly. He had gone against the biggest moral of his entire being and was now pretending everything was normal. What had last night done to him? Mrs. Lee sat Sunggyu down in the make up seat while she prepared her new experiment. The Transparent stared at himself in the mirror, wondering what went wrong in him.

"This time I'll be dying your hair – with sheal, of course. That wouldn't be an experiment if it wasn't." Mrs. Lee said, snapping Sunggyu out of his trance. "I heard from a good friend that sheal could be used to make many things other than skin care. She said it could work as a hair dye that wouldn't make your hair coarse and unhealthy." She continued, already starting to apply some to the Transparent's scalp. Sunggyu felt the mixture get massaged into his hair by the woman. Its feeling made him forget about his guilt and inner debate for a while; instead, enjoying the sensation as it lasted.

Sunggyu got out of the shower and dried his new red hair with the towel. Mrs. Lee had asked what he wanted his new hair color to be but he didn't have any preference. He fell asleep shortly after the question, leaving her to work her magic without his knowledge. He had woken up to light pink hair and nearly couldn't recognize himself. His natural black had disappeared under the bright color. Mrs. Lee said that as time went by, the color would eventually darken to the color of the red rising sun.

"It looks good against your fair skin tone." She had said a couple hours before. Sunggyu had finished up his chores for the day and, true to her word, the dye had turned red. Howon had complimented him at the dinner table, saying that his mom knew what she was doing when it came to all things fashion. Sunggyu had no doubt about that statement when he ran his fingers through his damp hair. The dye had not run at all in the shower, making his life easier.

He changed into his pajamas, a baggy shirt and pants that Howon loaned him, and set his alarm to 3 am like usual. Sunggyu glanced at the window. His decision had to be made right now before he went to bed. To die or not to die, that is the question. The Transparent read over the word scratched into the glass. Unlock. The tingling started up in his stomach again, this time more intense than this morning. For some unknown reason, Sunggyu didn't feel that his life was threatened at all; rather, he felt security when he unlatched the window.

"I won't see tomorrow, will I?" He mumbled, curling up in his bed before drifting off into a restless sleep. Three hours later – Sunggyu saw thanks to the time on the ceiling – the familiar rattling filled the room. This time, though, the window was able to fully open. Sunggyu's heartbeat quicken as he heard the intruder set foot into his room. With every step closer it came, Sunggyu's eyes widened a little more, his heart now pounding in his ears. He felt the intruder stop at his bed and his heart skipped a beat.

"Get up. I know you are awake." A low voice ordered. Sunggyu did what he was told and sat up slowly, back still facing the man. His eyes focused in the dark, locating the light switch. Suddenly, he jolted up and lunged for the switch. The light stung his eyes and momentarily paralyzed him along with the intruder.

"Don't move." The Transparent said, speaking as if he wasn't in fear for his life. The unknown man took a step forward, making Sunggyu step closer to the wall. As the man came closer, Sunggyu's kept backing up until his body touched the wall.

"I'm not going to hurt you." The man, who Sunggyu could see clearly now, said. It didn't convince the Transparent at all. Sunggyu had come up with a plan in his mind on how to escape and got ready. His hand slowly reached for the light switch again as he examined the intruder up and down, remembering his face for later.

The man, who Sunggyu figured was an Unholy rebel, was a little shorter than him. He was a lot muscular than him, though. Even through the long sleeve black shirt Sunggyu could see the define shape of the man's arms. His face was uncovered but he wore a black military cap to shade his eyes.

"I'm here to free you." He said, stopping a couple feet away from Sunggyu. That confused the Transparent.

"You don't want to kill me?" Sunggyu asked, his grip of the switch loosening. "But they say you kill Transparents." The shady guy clicked his tongue angrily. This was taking too long for his liking.

"I know what the Holies say but they are lying. I'm trying to help you, now let's go." He tried to convince Sunggyu, outstretching his hand for him to take. It was almost working, too, but Sunggyu knew better.

"I don't want to leave. I'm wanted here." The Transparent said, retightening his grip on the light switch in case that triggered the Unholy. The said man looked rather surprised at the statement, as if he never heard it before.

"You'll want to eventually. I'll be in the area for another month so if you change your mind, just call my name in the middle of the night." He said, slipping back out of the window seamlessly. Of course for it to work Sunggyu would need the strange man's name. "Woohyun. Nam Woohyun. Just call, I'll come be your prince in shining armor." Woohyun winked before disappearing into the night.

Sunggyu stood there, supporting himself on the wall as he let his heartbeat calm down. He had so many unanswered questions. Why would the Holies lie about the rebels? Why would the Unholies want to free the Transparents? Sunggyu slid down to the ground – his legs had given out and were shaking non-stop.

"Nam…Woohyun…" He breathed, eyes scanning the open window for any signs of the man. Suddenly his eyelids felt heavy and he out.

~~~~~~~
Happy Thanksgiving everyone~ So, we meet Woohyun! Who called that he was an Unholy? ^ ^ Don't worry, like he said, the Holy Sanctum tells lies about them. Some might be true and some might not. You never know until I tell you so keep guessing and calling things until the end!
Chapter 22: Wow, that was a severe twist. I had a suspicion when Mrs. Nam told Woohyun her story, but didn't think I'd be right lol. Dang, that was sad and beautiful at the same time. I loved it~
Chapter 22: At first I'm going to like 'Where is Howon??' and yeah finally he's back :D
I'm crying so much when Howon saying goodbye to Sunggyu. It really hurts ㅠㅠ
I'm sorry. I think I just into HoGyu ㅠㅠ
I don't expect Woohyun to be Sunggyu's brother actually. The conversation in the walkie talkie is really obvious but still... ㅠㅠ
Yeah it's kind of sad ending. Too bad WooGyu can't be together.....
Or maybe Sunggyu is the young Holy's destiny? *giggling*
Sorry I'm being biased again ㅠㅠ
I love your story tbh :)
There isn't a lot action fanfics about Infinite I think...?
Chapter 23: soooooooo this story started off really good and then just careened to the weirdest and most abrupt ending. i was looking forward to the ending too, but it felt a bit hasty :(. ruined it for me.
and i don't mean the happy ending vs. sad ending. the pacing of the was too harried.
