Chapter 20

Transparent

Sunggyu hid behind a blockade and peeked out. One of the guards had his back turned towards him, giving the brown haired man a chance to sneak by. In a swift movement, Sunggyu dashed to the other wood stack and met up with another rebel, who welcomed him behind the barrier in a hurry. The guard still had his back turned so the both of them moved further into the enemy territory.

Sunggyu looked around the area and scanned for his target. Each rebel was sent out to find one of the rebels held captive and escape with them before they were discovered. The brown haired man dodged a few obstacles and halted when he met up with a staircase and a guard. Luckily, the guard was walking to the opposite side of the hall when he approached. Sunggyu swung his body over the railing and dropped down to the second level, where his instincts told him to explore.

He paused his search at a corner and carefully looked around it. The corridor was dark and void of life. Sunggyu made his way to the first door he saw and jiggled the knob a bit to see if it was locked. It didn't budge from its original position so he pressed his cheek to the door, listening in for any sounds coming from the other side. There was a short rustling of chains before it went silent again, as if someone inside had shifted on their feet.

When he was sure no one else was around him, Sunggyu bent down to the doorknob's level and pulled out a lockpick from his belt pouch. Slowly but surely, he worked the tools back and forth in the lock until he heard a satisfying click. He pushed the door open slightly and looked around in the dark room for the imprisoned Dawning Trinity member.

"Sunggyu!" A voice whispered. "Hurry up and get me out of these shackles." The brown haired man rushed over and undid the bindings blindly, as his eyes were not yet fully adjusted to the lack of light. Once the rebel was free, the two of them exited the room and made their way back up the stairs. Sunggyu checked for the guard and saw him looking out of a window with a bored expression.

They let out a sigh of relief once they made it out of enemy territory. The rebel Sunggyu had rescued, which happened to be Jinki – one of Jonghyun's friends –, walked over to their base and pressed stop on their team's timer. A siren went off, signaling a pass for the two.

"Good job. Three minutes and forty-eight seconds." Jinki said, congratulating Sunggyu for his faster than average escape trial. The rebels who were assigned to rescuing Woohyun and the others had been training non-stop. This was Sunggyu's third round of the trial, his score waning a minute every time. The brown haired rebel pat Jinki on the back as he passed by, heading straight for his water bottle.

He sat down and took a long swig. It was nearing six o'clock in the evening and he had been running all over the HQ's training building since four in the morning. His mind couldn't stop yearning to embark on the actual mission, but he knew he had to ready himself before he could. Although the escape trial was a set up course, each participant acted as serious as the real thing. Well, except that one rebel that assumed the role of a guard who stared out the window.

Sunggyu decided to rest for the day so he head to the cafeteria. It was a little early for dinner so the room was practically empty. The brown haired man walked up to the counter and ordered his food. As he waited, he looked around and recognized a spot that jogged his memory.

"Hey guys, what do you want?" Sungjong asked from behind the counter. Sunggyu ordered his normal lunch consisting of a sandwich and chocolate milk. Woohyun giggled a bit from his right side.

"I'll have the pasta and wow, you're really rocking the lunch lady look." He smirked at Sungjong, who clicked his tongue angrily.

The brown haired rebel felt a tinge of pain in his chest when the flashback ended. Sungjong and Woohyun were no longer here in the HQ and his life wasn't as carefree as it was back then. He wished that every bad thing that happened to them seized to exist in that moment. Mrs. Nam had uncovered where the Holies were holding the rebels, but Sungjong was still nowhere to be found.

"Just wait a bit longer. I'll return the favor and save you…Woohyun." Sunggyu whispered under his breath. His food came and he quickly flashed a smile at the worker before finding a table to sit at. He looked down as he ate sandwich, trying to shake the uneasy feeling welling up in his stomach. Woohyun had seemed like he was barely holding on to consciousness when he shouted through the walkie-talkie.

What if they didn't get there in time? Sunggyu felt a lump form in his throat and he lost what was left of his appetite. With a deep sigh, he trashed the rest of his sandwich and dragged himself to his room, where he stripped out of his shirt and snuggled into the warm blankets of his bed. He rolled over and closed his eyes, but no matter how hard he tried, he couldn't bring himself to fall asleep. A couple hours later, the rest of his roommates retired to bed, but he still remained awake.

Sunggyu shifted his position and faced the clock, which showed the number 11. He bit his lip when he realized just how long he had been stuck in his head thinking about Woohyun. Dongwoo and other rebels were also in danger, yet the purple haired man was the only thing on his mind. What if, when he returned to HQ, he didn't act the same? What if Mr. Lee had done something to change him? Sunggyu forced his eyes closed and blocked out the oncoming negative thoughts.

The next morning at dawn, the entire room was startled awake with a loud siren. Sunggyu shot out of bed, thinking the group had returned. The other three rebels groaned with distaste as the brown haired man made a lot of racket in order to get dressed. He flew out of the room and ran to a window, where he was greeted with emptiness. There was no van parked outside, no luggage resting on the ground, no Woohyun. Sunggyu's heart dropped to his stomach.

All of a sudden, the hallway was filled with Mrs. Nam's voice, which emitted from hidden speakers.

"Good morning, members. I have good news that I wish to share with you. Lee Sungjong has returned to HQ unharmed. He has enlightened us with recent Holy gossips that prove to be of use. Those who are scheduled to depart later this evening, please meet in my office as soon as you can."

After the last word was spoken, the sleepy hall was reduced to silence once again. Sunggyu, forgetting his sadness from a minute earlier, sprinted all the way to Seungah's study, where she waited patiently. Sungjong was sitting in a seat near the desk and glanced up when Sunggyu entered.

"Sunggyu." He gasped as the brown haired man bent down in front of him and gave him a big hug. Sunggyu, who was out of breath and a little sweaty, tightened his grip around the younger rebel when he squirmed.

"I'm so glad you are safe." He said honestly. Sungjong sighed and relaxed into Sunggyu's embrace. After a while, Mrs. Nam gently tapped the brown haired man on the shoulder. Sunggyu looked up and realized the room had been filled with the remaining rebels. He let go of Sungjong awkwardly and stepped back, turning his attention to the leader.

"Since you are all here, I'll asked Sungjong to start." She said, motioning to the young man. Sungjong nodded and stood up from his chair.

"Well, while I was clearing my head, I stopped at our base in the Holy territory – you know, where we take the Transparents for the night after we rescue them." Sungjong clarified. There was a collective nod throughout the room so he continued.

"There were some rumors going around the rebels stationed there saying that the Holies were going to have a public hanging. At first, I didn't know what it was about until I learned that Woohyun, Dongwoo, and the others had gone out searching for me and somehow got captured."

Sunggyu felt a lump form in his throat the more Sungjong explained in detail about the rumors.

"They said it would be held on Saturday, when most Holies have a day off from work. I had to make sure it was true so I went to the town square, where I saw the stage being built. I knew I had to warn someone so I ran all the way back to HQ as fast as I could. Of course, I started my trip yesterday and only got here before the sun rose this morning." The young rebel concluded. The room remained silent as the rescue party floated through everyone's mind. Sunggyu couldn't help but feel nervous.

"This is perfect for us, though." Mrs. Nam spoke out, "Today just happens to be Saturday."

Sorry for not updating in a while hahaha! I'm thinking 3 more chapters after this? Who knows~ I think the next fic I'll start will be The Color Of Sound sequel, which I will be preparing over the next few days. Look forward to the ending, as there won't be a sequel for this!

Chapter 22: Wow, that was a severe twist. I had a suspicion when Mrs. Nam told Woohyun her story, but didn't think I'd be right lol. Dang, that was sad and beautiful at the same time. I loved it~

Chapter 22: At first I'm going to like 'Where is Howon??' and yeah finally he's back :D
I'm crying so much when Howon saying goodbye to Sunggyu. It really hurts ㅠㅠ
I'm sorry. I think I just into HoGyu ㅠㅠ

I don't expect Woohyun to be Sunggyu's brother actually. The conversation in the walkie talkie is really obvious but still... ㅠㅠ
Yeah it's kind of sad ending. Too bad WooGyu can't be together.....
Or maybe Sunggyu is the young Holy's destiny? *giggling*

Sorry I'm being biased again ㅠㅠ

I love your story tbh :)
There isn't a lot action fanfics about Infinite I think...?

Chapter 23: soooooooo this story started off really good and then just careened to the weirdest and most abrupt ending. i was looking forward to the ending too, but it felt a bit hasty :(. ruined it for me.

and i don't mean the happy ending vs. sad ending. the pacing of the was too harried.
