Chapter 8

You're My Target!

I couldn’t even explain to her because she was already babbling to herself.

“Oh my gosh! My daughter is finally getting a boyfriend! To top it off, it is a prince charming! I can finally forgive you now for being single your whole life! I can’t wait to see how pretty my grandchildren are-“

“Umma!” I called, stomping on my feet to gain her attention.

She stops talking and look at me. I pouted, “He’s not my boyfriend.”

Her face show some signs of disappointment but quickly turn into signs of confusion.

“Then who is he? Your friend? But why would he walk you home if he’s not your boyfriend?” she asked.

I couldn’t come up with an answer. I didn’t like to talk about Luhan and me, especially with my mom.

“So do you like him?” she questioned.

My eyes widen and I gasped, “No way!”

“So he like you?” she asked.

My voice was caught in my throat. I didn’t have a quick reply to her question and she smile in triumph.

“So just start dating.” She suggested.

“Umma! You don’t understand!” I whined.

I took off my shoes and place them on the ground. My mom gave me a confused look and asked, “What don’t I understand?”

I shrugged, “Well…I don’t know? But I am sure that I don’t like in that way.”

“And why don’t you?” she pressed on.

For goodness sake, Luhan only confess to me a while ago. Yes, we talk a lot earlier but I still could not forget our first meeting. Also, a part of me is telling me that something about this situation is not right.

“Wait, do you like someone else?” she suddenly asked.

That question caught me off guard. Xiumin suddenly came to my mind and I couldn’t help but blushed. I hesitated before answering, “No?”

My mom slapped my shoulder and yelled,” Yah! Who could you like more than that sweet boy that sends you home?”

I don’t know why my mom liked Luhan so much. I mean, she only saw him once! She doesn’t even know him and looks can be deceiving!

I rub my shoulder softly and complained, “Umma! Why did you hit me?”

She crossed her arms and ignored my question. Her lips curled into a pout and she complained,” All this time you have secretly like a boy and you did not bother to tell me, your mom? Then I see you with a guy, talking happily together, and he turns out to be your friend. As your mom-“

She stop talking when I gave her a bear hug. I never knew my mom was such a worry-wart. I never bother telling her my love life because there was never really anything, at least until now. I also don’t feel like telling her but I find it so sweet how caring she is. Immediately, she put her arms around me and we stood there for a while. We were interrupted by the ringing of my cell phone. My mom let go of me and I pulled out my cellphone. The caller ID was Aisha and I answer the call.

“Yes?” I asked.

“You receive my message right? You didn’t wait for me, right?” she asked worriedly.

Even though she was not there, I unconsciously nodded my head and replied, “Yes.”

My mom decided to leave me alone and walk back to what she was doing. I went straight to my room while still talking to Aisha. I threw my bag on the bed and place my notebooks on my desk. Then I sat on my bed before asking her, “So what was the emergency? Did something happen?”

She laughed and answered, “It was nothing. It’s just that I had to pick up my younger brother from school. My mom called me that she couldn’t make it so I had to pick him up.”

We talk for a while longer until I hang up. I threw my cellphone next to my bag and collapse on my bed. It had been a long day. No, it had been a long week. First Luhan confessed to me, and then I talked to my crush Xiumin and found out that he was a jerk. Not only that, I partnered up with Chanyeol and talk to the cold-hearted Kris. Many girls would call me lucky but for me, it was nothing but trouble. I never wanted their attention, except for Xiumin, of course. But there is no way I’m ever going to admit that.

I was too lazy to change out of my school uniform. I pull my blanket over my shoulder and decided to take a nap. It was still in the afternoon but it wouldn’t hurt to take a nap. Slowly, I close my eyes and went into a slumber sleep.

I woke up when I heard my mother knocking on my door. I fumble around in my bed because I was too tired to unlock the door. She knock again, only louder this time.

“Beatrice, dinner is ready.” She called.

I was too tired to reply so I didn’t answer. That seems to be the wrong answer because she pounded on the door and shouted, “Yah! Wake up before I break this door!”

I unhappily got off my bed and walk sluggishly to open the door. I was greeted with a bright light that stung my eyes. I rub my eyes because they were still a little bit closed.

“Hurry up and come down to eat. Also wash that dirty face and switch out of your uniform. I can’t believe you are still wearing it.” She complained, shaking her head.

When she walk away, I return and lay down on my cozy bed. Only five more minute, I thought to myself.

“Yah! I thought I told you to wake up!” she shouted.

I jump off my bed and spun around to face her. She was standing next to the door.

“Umma, can’t I just sleep for five more minutes? “ I pleaded.

She click her tongue in shook her head in disapproval. I groaned in dissatisfaction. When she left, I decided not to sleep again in case I get caught. I close the door and change into a plain t-shirt and a sweat pant. I tied my hair into a messy bun and headed to the dining room. Strangely, there was no delicious smell emitting from the room. I looked at the empty table and frowned. There were no trays of foods there. My mom appeared from the kitchen and I gave her a suspicious look.

“Where’s dinner? “ I asked.

She gave me a smile and pointed toward the kitchen. I narrow my eyes at her and follow her into the kitchen. There was no smell in the kitchen either. I looked around and my eyes landed on some uncut vegetables.

I repeated my question.

“Where’s dinner?”

“You’re making it.” She answered.

I knew she was going to say that. I hated cooking but I knew I had to learn how to cook sometime in my life.

“Umma, you tricked me,” I pouted.

She laughed and patted my back. I could have slept a little more!

“Now, let’s begin cooking.” She began.

She handed me a cabbage and I began cutting the cabbages into slices. I put the cabbage slices into a large bowl and pour in some cold water. I also added salt and I mixed them for a while until satisfaction. I glimpse at my mom and saw her making some kind of soup that consist of cabbage. I sighed and return to my cabbage, rinsing it with cold water. I pour the water away and began adding the kimchi paste into the cabbage, some minced garlic, chopped green onions, and some julienned carrots. I mixed it all together and sniffed the fresh aroma coming from the kimchi. The soup was emitting a delicious smell and I couldn’t help my mouth form watering. I grab onto a small piece of the kimchi and put it inside my mouth. Although it was a quick kimchi, I was happy with the result. It tasted so good I couldn’t help praising myself.

I look at the cabbage and soy bean paste soup and heard my stomach growling. My mother soup took longer than my kimchi but it looks so much more delicious than mine. We set the foods on the table and began eating. I was so proud of my cooking skills.

“So when are you getting marry?” my mom asked out of the bloom.

I choked on my food and coughed. I grab onto the nearest glass and gulped down the water. I couldn’t believe what my mother was asking me! First, I have never dated before. Second, I am currently single and not dating anyone. And last but not least, if I am not dating anyone, how can I get marry?

“Umma, what are you talking about?” I asked.

She shrugged her shoulders, “Well, you’re learning how to cook and soon you’re be cooking for your husband.”

I rolled my eyes. I do not like where this conversation was heading.

“You are already in high school and it would be nice if you are dating someone. For example, that sweet boy who send you home.” She suggested.

I was about to protest when she lean back and brought her hands up, as if giving up.

“I’m just saying, Beatrice. There’s no need to get all…you know.”

I couldn’t stop myself from smiling. My mom was being so ridiculous. She was giving me advice, but no, it’s okay. I rather not get into a relationship yet, especially not marriage.

She was about to continue when I stood up and announced, “I finish eating.”

I heard my mom laughing and I knew that she was making fun of me. I turn to give her a glare, which didn’t work. I brought my dishes to the sink and began washing them. My mom came up behind me and handed me her dishes.

“Honey, I was just joking.” She said.

I nodded and smiled at her, “I know mom, I’m not mad.”

She return the smile but started again, “But you should really-‘

I held up a hand to stop her from speaking. She laughed and gave up.

“Fine, I won’t talk about this anymore.”

I sighed in relief. My mom had already accepted Luhan without even talking to him. Luhan’s looks can be deceiving, especially with that face that said he cannot harm even a single fly. He sure is dangerous. My mom had fallen into a spell liked how many people did. Luhan is not a devil in disguise, right? Because I pray that I do not fall into his spell too.
