Minor Character Death
Jongin could hear the brush swish the cup’s contents around as the paint dyed the water a pale purple. Normally he only drew with pencil or pen with no thought to the details in color, but this time it was different. This time he wasn’t just creating; this time he was re-creating. This time he was painting a memory, a distorted picture from the past that only he remembered.
As the brush the smooth canvas, Jongin could hear the pitter-patter of the paint as it cascaded down the masterpiece and found a place to rest on the concrete base of the studio. He didn’t bother to clean it up. There was no point. The entire studio floor was doused in color thanks to the memories, and Jongin’s need to recreate them. But Jongin didn’t complain. After all, Kyungsoo would have liked to see the floor splashed with color. He never liked the studio because it was so boring with its plain black, white, and grey interior. He would have liked to see the floor with a little purple, red, blue, and green.
As Jongin prepared to begin the final of his work, he felt an emptiness fill his entire being. A feeling of loneliness set in. He didn’t want it to be over. He didn’t want the memory to fade. He didn’t want the emotions he was feeling to change. He wanted to keep missing him. He didn’t want to get over it; he wanted to be surrounded by Kyungsoo even if that meant drowning in grief. His grip on the brush loosened and he watched as the thin, fragile thing fell to the floor. The sound of it breaking upon the impact echoed throughout the studio just as it had the 321 times before. The last time Jongin finished a work was three months ago, the last time he left the studio was two.
