Believe Only Half of What You See and Nothing That You Hear - indefinite hiatus

It’s another stormy day, students kept indoors by the torrential downpour turning the well-manicured grounds into a marshland. The hallways in the castle are drafty, the lights flickering with the intensity of the wind howling outside. It’s downright boring.

Donghae rolls onto his back. His bed is, of course, unmade, books and papers scattered from where he’d been attempting to get some homework done. He’d been unsuccessful, obviously, as there’s no more than his name written at the top of his paper so far. But it’s Saturday and homework is the furthest thing from Donghae’s mind at the moment.

“Hyukkie,” he whines, rolling back onto his stomach so he can watch his best friend. The elder is standing in the bathroom with the door open, aking sure his hair parts just right – the rain always makes his hair a mess. “I’m bored.”

Hyukjae doesn’t even look up from the mirror, frowning as he tries to flatten a particularly stubborn curl. “Come to the student council meeting with me if you’re so bored.”

Donghae pulls a disgusted face. “Ugh, no thanks.”

“You’re on the student council, you know,” Hyukjae points out, finally getting the curl to lay the way he wants it to. He immediately attacks it with hairspray to ensure it doesn’t go wild again. “You should come to at least a few meetings.”

“My presence is really unnecessary,” Donghae says, rolling back onto his back and staring up at the ceiling. There’s a chip in the paint in the corner; he wonders what caused it. “I’m the historian. I only have to go when something important happens. Weekly meetings aren’t exactly what I’d call important.”

“Why are you even on the student council if you don’t care about the meetings?” the elder demands, setting down his can of hairspray and examining his hair for the billionth time in the mirror.

Donghae grins upside down at his best friend. “Because you’re on the student council.”

Hyukjae rolls his eyes. They’ve been friends for so long that these sorts of cheesy declarations no longer affect him. “Well then wait for me. The meeting shouldn’t take long – if Jungsoo even shows up – and then we can go get something to eat or go shopping or something.”

“Okay,” Donghae agrees. “I’m just going to borrow your laptop to watch television, okay? You’ve got the latest episode of The Heirs, right? I missed it the other night, so I’m going to catch up while you’re gone.”

Hyukjae jumps, knocking the can of hairspray off the counter with a clatter. “No!” he exclaims. “I didn’t give you permission to get on my computer!”

Donghae rolls his eyes. “God, we’ve been friends practically our whole lives. Why are you so protective of your computer with me?”

Hyukjae’s face stains red. “My computer is my personal, private belonging,” he declares stiffly.

Again, Donghae rolls his eyes. “So is your underwear but you don’t mind leaving that all around. Seriously, I’m not going to go snooping or anything. I just want to watch the latest episode of this show.”

Hyukjae wrinkles his nose. “You’ll never get in anyway. It’s protected by a password.”

Without hesitation, Donghae types something into the password bar. The computer beeps almost immediately in affirmation. “Seriously, dude, even though you change your password every week, I know you better than anyone. I know all your passwords.”

Hyukjae leaps forward and snatches the laptop away from Donghae before the younger can open the file where Hyukjae keeps his downloaded dramas.

“Yah!” Donghae exclaims indignantly. “What’s your deal, Hyukkie? I just want to watch the damn show!”

“Then watch on your own computer!” Hyukjae snaps. “Why does it have to be mine? Anyway, I’m leaving for the meeting now. I’ll be back later.” And, as if to reiterate his point, he puts his computer in his bag and leaves with it.

Of course, this only makes Donghae that much more curious about the contents of his roommate’s laptop. What on earth could Hyukjae be hiding that he’s so afraid of anyone knowing?

Donghae is smart enough to let the matter lie for the time being, knowing that Hyukjae is on his guard now. In fact, he waits until Hyukjae gets in the shower later that night to swipe the computer and log on. Hyukjae has changed the password since that morning, but, like Donghae had said, he knows the elder like the back of his hand and can guess any password.

The computer beeps as it unlocks, bringing up Hyukjae’s home screen. That’s innocent enough; it’s a photograph of the two of them on a trip they took to Busan over the summer, all bronzed and shirtless on the beach with a beautiful sunset in the background. Donghae knows that he doesn’t have much time – Hyukjae doesn’t spend much time in the showers most nights – so he has to hurry through the various folders on the desktop.

Most of them are pretty basic. There’s a folder for homework assignments, mostly empty since it’s still so early in the semester. Another folder is for student council stuff, which is decently full since Hyukjae is the council’s treasurer and has to keep detailed lists of all spending. There’s a folder for dramas and movies, a folder for pictures, a folder for music and games. And then, hidden in the folder for dramas, is an unnamed folder that turns out, when Donghae double clicks on it, to be password protected.

Jackpot.

This password is about as easy to crack as the one Hyukjae uses to lock his computer – or maybe Donghae just knows him too well – and soon he’s in the folder. It appears to be nothing but unnamed videos, dozens of them with nothing but numbers and random letters in the titles.

Curious, Donghae opens the first video. He’s so engrossed in finding out Hyukjae’s secret that he doesn’t hear the shower turn off or the bathroom door open.

“What are you doing?” Hyukjae demands shrilly from the doorway, standing there with nothing but a towel wrapped around his waist. “Are you on my laptop?!”

Donghae laughs as the video opens, cheesy music giving it away immediately. “This is your big secret, Hyukkie?” he demands. “? That’s nothing really to hide, even if it’s illegal. Everybody watches at some point.”

That’s when he realizes that it’s not just any playing on his roommate’s laptop. Instead of a man and a woman getting it on, it’s two guys.

Hyukjae lunges forward and snaps the laptop closed. Face burning red, he takes the laptop back into the bathroom with him and locks the door.

Donghae is too shocked to call after him. He’d thought he knew everything there is to know about his best friend, but apparently he was wrong. Big time.

Sorry this is so short and sorry it's taiken me so long to update. I moved to Korea, so things have been really, really hectic lately. I'll try to get into a more regular update schedule again.

On the plus side, though, I get to see BAP next weekend ^^
