Coffee, biscuits, and a date at the SM building
I tried to forget you“wow, you’re apartment is so high up” Hana exclaimed as she smushed her face against the hallway window making Minseok laugh, and making a mark on the glass that would be hard to wipe off.
“I like being this high, it makes me feel as if I can see everything from up here” He told her and carried walking towards his door leaving her behind at the window
“I’ve never seen the city like this before” Hana yelled, and ran quickly to catch up with the small man and poked him
“Really? The view isn’t even that amazing” He said smiling at Hana and searching his pockets for the key, he found it and pushed it into the lock of the door they had just arrived at.
“Minseok, have you ever been out of this city?” Hana asked looking slightly worried as she spoke
“A long time ago, since then I haven’t felt the need to leave” He said smiling again, and finally unlocked the door. Hana decided to stop asking questions
“Here it is” Minseok said waving his arms about trying to find the light switch in the dark room
There was a small ‘click’ and The room began to glow with light
“Wow….” Hana said staring at the contents of the living room
“What” Minseok said trying to look around too, but all he saw was his old couch, coffee table, TV and a cream rug covering the carpet
“Your rug looks like it cost more than my entire house” She squeaked and turned to Minseok to stare at him with wide open in surprise.
“Don’t exaggerate” Minseok said walking further into the room to stand on the rug “It was left to me by my Grandparents when they died, as was the rest of this furniture”
“aww, I’m sorry” Hana said awkwardly standing by the front door
“It’s fine” Minseok said laughing and walking over to the door that lead to the kitchen“I’ll go and make some coffee, you can sit down over there if you want” Minseok said pointing to the couch, and walked into the other room to get the drinks
Hana obeyed, and quietly sat down making sure she didn’t knock anything over or making any marks on things. She was still staring at all of the objects around her when Minseok returned with a tin of biscuits .
“Thanks for helping me get back today, I really didn’t want to get on the bus after I’d been cying” Minseok said and put the tin down on the table, and left to go and get the cups.
“It’s ok, after realising who you were I was a bit too shocked to start work again, so helping you helped me” Hana said loud enough for Minseok to hear in the other room
“That’s good, but you really should get back soon” Minseok said, and walked out holding the coffee, “Help yourself to something to eat”
“I thought you didn’t go out, how do you get food, and the money to pay for food?” Hana asked once Minseok had sat down again with the coffee, Hana hoped that she hadn’t crossed a line by asking such a personal question
He just smiled at her again and put his cup down to rest on his knee
“My parents mostly, they own a company in Gangnam, so we have a lot of money, it means I don’t have to work. And for the food, I order it over the internet”
Hana sighed nodding
“What about you? Are you doing ok working at the café?” Minseok asked her
“Yeah, it’s work to get money, so I have to do it ‘cause not everyone is as lucky as you” Hana said laughing again, but Minseok just stared at her
He had never been told that he was lucky before, sure no-one ever asked enough to know how better off he was than some people, but no-one had gone as far as that.
“I’m sorry” Hana said quickly looking at Minseok’s expression
“It’s fine” Minseok replied, still confused “You said I was lucky, what did you mean?”
“Um, well, you don’t have to work, and you still have a huge apartment, enough money to buy thing you need, and fresh food and clean water”
“Doesn’t everyone?” Minseok asked
“No, I’m not as lucky as you but I’m still better than some people. I have three jobs I have to work, but I barely have enough to eat or a house to live in” Hana said looking at the ground, she looked upset and Minseok almost thought she was crying
She looked at her watch and stood up quickly
“I’m sorry, I really have to get back”
“It’s fine, and I’m sorry” Minseok said picking up her coat and turning to give it to her
Hana nodded and began walking towards the door, but stopped and turned around again
“I almost forgot” She said and took something out of her pocket “Could you put your number in here” she asked passing Minseok her phone
“Sure” he said typing in the correct digits
“Thanks, I’ll see you again at the shop” She yelled and opened the front door “Thanks for the coffee” and then she was gone leaving Minseok alone still confused over him being lucky. At least he would have something to think about for the next couple of days
Minseok was woken up one morning a few days later by his phone ringing, since only three people had his number (Hana, his mother, and his father), and only one of them talked to him every day, Minseok assumed it was Hana
Ever since he had given her his number, she had called to make sure he was ok, and if he wanted to meet up somewhere. It was odd for Minseok to have someone talk to him all the time, sometimes he felt crowded with all the attention, but most of the time he was happy that someone cared about him
He grabbed his phone from the table next to his bed and answered it without looking at who was calling
“Hana? It’s really early, is it something important?” He said blinking a few times to get adjusted to the light
‘It’s not that early, and yes it is something important, but it’s not Hana’ Minseok recognised Luhan’s voice coming from the other end of the line
“How did you get my number?” Minseok asked him looking annoyed, and standing up to turn on the lights and get dressed
‘Hana gave it to me, but that’s not important, what is important is that you meet me outside the SM building at 12’
“What, Why there?” Minseok asked grabbing the cleanest short he could find and pulling it over his head
‘Someone there wants to talk to you’ Luhan said
“Huh? Why would they want to talk to me, I don’t even work there anymore”
‘Look just come, they- are you getting dressed?’ Luhan asked laughing
Minseok turned red, and he was glad no-one could see him at that moment
“What, no, but I might come, it depends how I’m feeling” Minseok tried to laugh, but he was just feeling too nervous and embarrassed to make another noise
‘Yeah whatever, just make sure you are there, I’ll be waiting outside’ and then he hung up
“Why does he want to meet there?” Minseok said out loud, and looked down at the shirt, if he was going to meet someone he needed to look better than he did, so he began searching his wardrobe for something.
There at the bottom of all the clothes he saw something, it was a t-shirt and a pair of jeans, but Minseok immediately recognised them, he had worn them the day everything went wrong.
He had thought he had thrown them out years ago, but he must have forgotten or something
But in the absence of anything else good enough to wear, he picked up the clothes and began to take off the mess of a shirt he had tried to put on earlier
Today would be very hard for him, but maybe it would turn out ok, Minseok just had to wait and see.
