Chapter 4

Soft Spot for You

After clearing my head of any more lingering thoughts about the two that just left, I turned back around to face the front of the bar.

I wonder where Kyu is. I really hope he comes back before another person comes up to me— this time they might not be as nice as Mister Bunny.

Actually, I should probably call him hyung to be more polite, even if it’s only in my head. But I guess it won’t matter. After all, what are the chances of ever meeting again?

Just then, I felt a hand land on my shoulder and give it a slight tug backwards. Thinking it was another stranger, I panicked and jerked my body around, but thankfully, it was only Kyu who looked a little fidgety. “Come on. Let’s go.”

I didn’t have time to ask what all the rush was about because Kyu just pulled me up by the wrist and then pushed me to walk in front of him, all the while keeping his palms resting on my back, giving me a little shove every now and again when it seemed I wasn’t walking fast enough for him.

We navigated our way in the dark through the maze of people that seemed to have grown in population since I first came in. When I pushed open the door and stepped outside, Kyu found his place beside me.

“What’s the hurry?” I stopped in front of the club entrance.

Kyu dug his hands into his pants pockets and kept on walking, although he wasn’t in a rush anymore and was now taking small steps. I jogged a couple of feet to catch up with him and when we fell into step, I looked up at him, still waiting for an answer.

He titled his head in my direction and snickered. “When I was on my way to clock out, I might have kinda knocked over one of Heechul’s most expensive wine glasses.”

“You what?!” Heechul hyung was sure to kill Kyu the next time he went in to work. He might probably not even wait that long and just show up at Kyu’s apartment tomorrow ready to bash his face in.

“Yeah, well, it was his fault. I mean, who puts one of their most prized possessions on display like that? He’s bound to find out soon so I wanted to get out of there before he found me. If that had happened, I would’ve had to sit through a thirty minutes lecture on the importance of money and how I need to keep my hands to myself and blah blah blah.”

I shook my head and he just stuck his tongue out at me.

At that moment, a cool breeze came howling up the street and I felt myself get goose bumps from the chill. Even though it was the middle of summer, the nights could get colder than expected sometimes and I guess tonight was one of those nights, especially since it was already a little past twelve and I was only wearing a light tee shirt.

Kyu noticed and I guess he remembered the reason why I was outside like this. He looked serious as he started flinging questions my way.

“Why did the old hag throw you out? Did you do anything wrong? Did you get kicked out for, like, ever? Because if that’s the case then you can live with me. We’ll go get your things in the morning and I’m gonna give that old hag a piece of my mind.” He was really fuming now, but I couldn’t help but smile. How did I ever get so lucky to have a friend like Kyu? He was being rude, but still, he had good intentions.

“What? Why are you smiling? Are you that excited to be living with me?”

I rolled my eyes. “Nothing. Can we talk about this when we get to your place? I’m kind of getting cold.”

“Fine. We only have a couple of blocks left anyways.” He then looked as though a light bulb flashed over his head.

“I’ll race you there,” he said in a playful tone, already bouncing on his feet.

“What? No. We’ll look like a bunch of idio—” I didn’t get to finish as he took off running up the street with his bag bouncing against his side and his hair flying back as the dim street lamps followed him up the block.

“Geez. This is so annoying.” But I still ran right after him, yelling that he was the biggest cheater on the face of the planet.

“You’re too slow! Come on, Hae! Use those short legs!” He shouted behind him, laughing as he ran.

“HEY! I DO NOT HAVE SHORT LEGS!”

I huffed and picked up speed but it was no use. He was already half a block ahead. Good thing the apartment building wasn’t too far away.

Two blocks later and I was barreling into Kyu who was waiting by the building entrance, slightly panting as he leaned against the wall beside the door.

He caught me only to throw me to the side a second later, moving to unlock the door. I was still panting quite heavily but I managed to ask, “How can you say I have short legs? They’re quite long actually.”

“Yeah, when you compare them to a dwarf’s.” He laughed.

“Hey! It’s not like you’re any taller. Three inches doesn’t make you part of the tall people’s club,” I huffed, having managed to catch my breath.

Kyu had gotten the door open and now we where making our way up the stairs because there was a sign on the elevator that read “Elevator Not Working”.

Three floors up, we arrived at Kyu’s apartment.

Still not having fully recovered from the amount of physical activity that I had just taken part in, I went straight for the couch, draping myself over the entire three-seater.

Kyu wasn’t far behind and when he was peering down at me, he let out a chuckle. “Not only do you have short legs, but you’re also pretty out of shape.”

“Am not out of shape.” I threw the nearest chair cushion in his direction but he dodged successfully.

“You want anything to eat?” He asked.

“Not really.”

“Ok. I’m gonna take a quick shower. I’ll be back in five minutes.”

I gave a little nod before he disappeared into his bedroom and then into the bathroom.

True to his word, Kyu only took a little over six minutes, walking out of the bathroom wearing striped pajama pants and a vest. He bee-lined his way over to the fridge in the small, opened kitchen.

I laughed as I saw him pull out the milk bottle and make a grab for the lucky charms box.

He turned to stick his tongue out at me from his place in the kitchen and then proceeded to make his late night snack.

Coming back into the living room, he took the seat next to me on the couch seeing as how I was now sitting up properly, although slightly slouching.

He spooned a mouthful into his mouth, and hadn’t even swallowed yet, but turned to me.

“So start talking or else I’m kicking you out too,” he spat some cereal bits my way, but there was a light smile on his face.

“Well… to put it simply, Umma called me into her office to—”

“You mean her evil lair,” he interrupted.

I shot him a look, but he just waved his spoon around and signaled me to continue.

“Like I was trying to say, Umma called me into her office to remind me about the company party we’re hosting… I think I already told you about it.” He looked up at the ceiling for a second in thought and then nodded.

“So she was telling me to be on my best behavior and then I kinda slipped and sai—”

“Did you tell her to go shove it?”

“What?! Why would I say that?!”

“I would’ve said it.”

“That would be rude. And are you going to let me finish?” I gave him a slightly annoyed look.

“Yeah go on. I still don’t know if we’re gonna be roomies yet.”

“Geez, we’re not going to live together.”

“Why not? Are you gonna get a place of your own? Cuz if that’s the case then I can come live with you since you’re rich and all. But then we’d still be roomies… so I don’t really get where you’re going with this.”

Thankfully he had finished his cereal and had placed the bowl on the coffee table, because that meant that I could now hit him repeatedly with a chair cushion, which I did.

Kyu might be good a dodging, but he’s not very good at one on one combat so I managed to hit his face a couple of times.

“Alright! Alright! I’ll shut up!” he surrendered from where he was curled up on the seat.

“You better,” I warned. “Now where was I?”

“The part where you told her to shove it.”

“That's it! I give up!”

“What did I do?”

“Shush. I’m not telling you anymore.”

“Fine. I’ll get it out of you tomorrow.”

I rolled my eyes but didn’t bother to retaliate since that’s probably what’s going to happen anyways.

Because Kyu couldn’t seem to keep quiet for more than a minute, he piped up with another conversation topic. “You know that guy I was telling you about before at the bar? The one that was drunk out of his mind? Well, I didn’t see him after I left you. I hope he wasn’t planning on driving home.” He tsked.

“No, his friend picked him up.”

Kyu gave me a questioning look.

“When you left me, the drunk mister came over to talk to me.”

“Oh my god. Did he do anything to you?” Kyu eyes widened.

I punched him lightly in the side. “It wasn’t like that. He just wanted to talk. Now that I think about it, he didn’t seem as drunk as you said. He was speaking perfectly fine although he was kinda weird… but don’t drunk people usually slur their word together and stuff like that?”

“Hae, there’s bunch of different levels of drunk. They’re not all falling over their feet and whatnot.”

“I guess. His friend looked really cool, though. The way he wore his suit was really perfect. I wanna look like that when I wear fancy clothes.”

Kyu chuckled. “You sound like girl talking about her crush.”

I pouted a little.  “That’s not it. He kinda reminds me of what a role model would look like.”

“Do you have a codename for him yet?”

“A codename?” I titled my head in confusion.

“Yeah. Whenever a girl has a secret crush, she has a codename for him… I’m not really sure why though. My cousin used to do it every time a new guy caught her eye. You should call your dude Mr. Suit.” He wiggled his eyebrows funnily.

I gave him an ‘are you serious?’ look. “That’s a stupid nickname,” I said bluntly.

“You got any better ideas?”

“Well, no, but— wait, I don’t need a codename for him. I don’t like him and probably won’t ever see him again.”

“Uh-huh.”

Kyu really gets on my nerves sometimes.

I had been getting sleepier ever since we got to the apartment but now it was really showing because I let out a yawn.

“Come on. We’ll talk about your man problems tomorrow,” Kyu laughed as he pulled me up from the comfy couch and lead me into the bathroom where we brushed our teeth and got ready for bed.

I borrowed a pair of Kyu’s pajamas and, after changing, jumped on the right side of the bed, which was officially mine whenever I slept over. It was the side closest to the wall and helps me from being kicked off the bed at night whenever Kyu tosses around like a maniac in his sleep.

When Kyu shut the lights and climbed in too, everything was quiet. I was slowly drifting into sleep when I heard Kyu whisper, “You asleep yet?”

I groaned. “If you would shut up then I might actually be able to.”

“I was just thinking about how I wanna run a company like you when I get older.” What a perfect time to be thinking about your future. Nonetheless, I tried to focus as Kyu looked up to the ceiling and poured his heart out about what he wanted to do with his life.

“You’re lucky. You’ll inherit it from your mom.” He then let out a laugh and to his side to look at me. “We should get married. Then the company would be under my name too and we could co-run it together.”

“I don’t wanna marry you. You have bad sleeping habits. You snore too loud and I don’t want to live with bags under my eyes for the rest of my life.”

He let out a huff and to his back again.

Not long after that, I fell asleep.

Chapter 32: Um...ok...nice as a fanfic...
...but for character development purposes I think Donghae should have gone with Hyukjae or on his own as it is his house and his own problem. He should learn how to face it and solve it, however painful it may be. Also, if he loves his brother dearly, why bever call him up even once? The character's like a dumb little dainty darling.
