Stranger
Spontaneous CircumstancesI churned this out after coming home today...just for Valentine's Day before it ends. Enjoy everyone ^^
We never count the number of people we encounter within our lives. It’s impossible. We see people every day as we’re walking down the sidewalk, or standing in line at the local coffee joint. Where ever we go, it’s inevitable that we are to meet someone.
Of course, whether or not these people remain strangers or become our friends is up to us, them, and I suppose we can add fate in the mix as well.
There were days where I had the opportunity to walk along leisurely, and to just imagine what could be. I admit, I was a dreamer, and I tended to live in the clouds rather than on the ground like my friends frequently told me to do. I couldn’t help it. My life wasn’t much, and sometimes living in my imagination was more interesting that reality.
Of course, reality came around and Friday was all a buzz with pinks, reds, and whites. It was more than obvious what that day was, especially with my suitemate making chocolates weeks prior. She was so passionate about this holiday, and it wasn’t even about the love part. It was about giving out chocolates she had homemade. And they tasted delicious.
Anyway, that day came, and I took some effort to dress nicely, but really didn’t expect anything for that day. My first class went by smoothly, and so did my discussion period. Afterward was lunch, and unfortunately that meant I was alone. My friend had class during this time. However, that didn’t stop me and I decided to eat outside on the bench that bordered the field.
The day was nice, with barely a cloud in the sky and a soft breeze here and there. I couldn’t say the same about my meal though. Dining at college grew old after awhile, so I decided to get a sandwich. Also, it helped that I had my novel in my bag, so I suppose that made lunch a bit better.
“Excuse me, could I sit here?”
I looked up from my book to see someone looking down at me. He looked familiar, but then again, even with the large campus, it was normal to recognize a face or two, even if you didn't know their names.
“Sure!” I mean, this bench was made for more than one, right?
I scooted over to give more room to the student before delving back into my novel. It was a couple of minutes later that he spoke up.
“How’s your book?”
“Oh, um, it’s all right I suppose. I haven’t had time to read for leisure in awhile.”
Looking at him again, I realized that he wasn’t too bad looking. It was quite the contrary. He was tall and lean, but still managed to make a presence. His hair was black and cut short, but it was styled slightly, giving off a flawless look. I noticed that he also had a book in his hands.
“How is your book going?”
He looked at it and smiled before glancing back at me.
“It’s all right too.”
“Ah, I see.”
Well, that was awkward…but what can I say? We were strangers after all. I smiled and turned back to my book. It was nice that he was trying to make conversation though.
“What’s your major?”
He still wanted to talk to me?
“General Biology, you?”
“Biochemistry and cell biology.”
“That’s cool. I have cousins who majored in that. Are you thinking pre-med?”
“Possibly, but at this point, I think anything could happen.”
“That’s true, college is the time to explore our interests.”
“What are you interested in pursuing?”
“Maybe pharmacy? Not really sure, but it’s something to tell people.”
We both chuckled, knowing how often we were asked these questions. They were inevitable, especially in college.
“Do you have any classes after this?” he asked.
“I have one at 2, and then one right after that at 3. What about you?”
“I actually have one at 2 as well, but I have to run an errand first.”
“Oh, I see. What do you have to do?”
He blushed and looked away before answering me.
“Just a delivery, that’s all.”
Well, it was Valentine’s Day, so I wasn’t surprised. By his reaction, I’m assuming he had a girlfriend.
“That’s nice to hear. I’m sure the recipient will be grateful.”
“Do you think so?”
“Yes, why wouldn’t they?”
“Promise?”
I laughed at the question.
“I promise. Who wouldn’t like receiving gifts on Valentine’s Day?”
He smiled, almost in relief, though I didn’t know why.
“Good to hear.”
He checked his watched before standing up.
“Well, I had better go. You know how large this campus and my class just happens to be on the other side from here.”
I frowned and nodded, understanding perfectly.
“Of course, you wouldn’t want to be late now, right? Have fun!”
With a grin, he waved and then turned around to leave me on my bench alone once again.
I checked the time on my phone and saw that it was about time for me to start heading to class as well. Coincidentally, my class was also on the other side of campus. Sticking my novel into my bag, I crumpled up my trash before standing up to throw it away. Coming back, I noticed that there was something else on the bench.
It was a single pink rose with a tag attached. Reading it, a smile made its way on my face before I picked up my bag to head to class.
I now had a name to this student: Min Ho. I suppose he isn’t a stranger anymore.
Yup, all the cheese that I usually include in my stories. Hope you enjoyed it :D
