Chapter 2
Secrets and Chances2ne1 have been received well by the audience. Two years after their debut they still continue to hit the music charts and the fan base just kept on growing in numbers. In fact, they have garnered attention from international media considering they were only two years in the industry. They have defied some, if not most perception about Korean music scene where people could usually see girl groups dressed in skimpy outfits while singing to their catchy songs and dancing to its y choreography which has been practiced for months, or those young and fresh-faced cute boys whose muscular built made the girls drool and squeal. And 2ne1’s success cannot be attributed to those things. Their music genres are combination of R&B, hip hop, and urban which is hard to find in most groups. Their image is not the cutesy or teeny bopper type. Theirs can be described fiercer, exuding power and femininity at the same time. Their songs are not just about heartbreaks but instead about moving on and not caring what most people would say, and most specially their songs are about women empowerment. They might not be the best looking girl group in terms of physical appearance but when it comes to performance, they are, without a doubt, the best. Their performances are stellar and their stage presence has been consistently impressive.
And receiving not just one but two awards from one of the most prestigious award giving bodies in the music scene have again solidified their status in the Korean pop industry. And as they received their second Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA) trophy for 2011’S Song of the Year, they were filled with gratitude to those who have helped them achieved success. Every member of 2ne1 could not contain their excitement and happiness as the received the awards. Indeed, it was overwhelming to have performed at the stage of Singapore Indoor Stadium in front of many people who are not only composed of different fan clubs but also the artists themselves. The hardship, trainings and sacrifices have paid off. To be considered one of the leaders in K pop act had just been a bonus for them. To be able to contribute something significant to the industry where they belong and to be able to give joy and great entertainment to the people—that is what is important for them.
