Seohyun- It's okay even if it hurts

------------------

The day before Haewon’s departure, there was a big farewell party. The younger children didn’t know the meaning of farewell and enjoyed the party. The older ones were somber.

Luhan tried to be happy, but Haewon didn’t even attempt at all. She couldn’t believe in less than 24 hours, they would be separated. It was a poignant reality for her.

That evening, Haewon and Luhan went to the tree one last time. They sat side-by-side against the trunk of the tree.

She stared blankly ahead of her while he watched the sun start to fall.

Haewon placed her hand over the sprouting root and clutched onto it. She inhaled the earthy scent around her. She would miss this. Everything about this place would cause her to be nostalgic. The people, the friendly atmosphere, the nature…and most of all, Luhan.

Luhan, the first person to open up to her since the accident.

The first person to like her unconditionally.

The first person she had fallen in love with.

Before she could shed more tears, he traced words on her arm. “What are you thinking about?”

Haewon shook her head. “Nothing.”

“Impossible. You must be thinking of something.” Luhan smiled softly.

Haewon thought about it then asked. “Do you miss China?” His smile faded a bit.

“Do you miss your birth country? Will you ever go back?” She asked.

Luhan looked away from her. Haewon waited patiently while he processed his answer. When he was ready, he wrote on her hand. “In some way, I do. I love Korea, but China was where I started from. Even though I have bad memories about the place, it’s still my memories. One day, I’d like to go back.”

She nodded in understanding. “What about a place you want to visit? Where would you go? What would you want to see?” Haewon wanted to ask everything she couldn’t ask before. The clock was against them, and she wanted to fill her brain with facts about Luhan before heading off to a foreign country.

“I want to go to Canada.” Luhan wrote on her palm and looked at her. “I want to go find you.”

Haewon softened. A lump formed in . She averted her gaze downwards so that he couldn’t witness her tears. Luhan tried to shift the depressing mood.

“What about you? Where would you go?”

“Me?” *Besides China, to maybe find you?* “I would go visit Paris.” Haewon answered.

“Paris?” Luhan tilted his head. Haewon nodded. “Before I became blind, I saw the Eiffel Tower. Not in real life, but through books and films. I remember talking about that tower with my family. We planned to visit there one day. Of course…not we can’t.” She sighed and leaned her head back against the trunk. “I don’t know why I was so fascinated about it, but I still am. If I have the chance, I would go there.”

Luhan smiled warmly. “That settles it then. Let’s meet in Paris.”

Haewon straightened up and blinked. “Paris?”

Luhan gripped her hand and placed it against his cheek with a nod. “If we ever get truly separated and have no hope of finding each other, let’s go to the Eiffel Tower. We will be able to reunite there.”

“How do we know when to go there?” Haewon asked.

Luhan moved her hand to his shoulder and shrugged. “We’ll have to leave that up to fate.”

“Fate…” Haewon whispered. The word sounded hopeful on her tongue.

The sky was getting darker, and the time was moving forward.

Haewon felt drowsy, but she didn’t want to leave this moment in time. It would be the last time she would ever be here with Luhan. She wanted to make the most of it. Luhan gazed at Haewon, whose head was resting on his shoulder. “It’s getting late…we should go back.”

She shook her head. “Five more minutes.” She wrote on his arm.

“Just five.” Luhan swore. But twenty minutes passed by and they had no intention of moving.

“Luhan oppa…” Haewon signed on his arm. Repeatedly, she signed his name on his arm.

Luhan grasped her hand to stop her. Instead, he pressed his fingers against her skin and began to sign her name on there. “Cho Haewon…Cho Haewon…” *The name of the person I love is Cho Haewon.*

“We’ll reunite one day, won’t we?” Haewon wrote on his arm.

Luhan snuggled against her and nuzzled his cheek against the top of her head. “Of course. I told you. One way or another, we’ll be together again. Believe in us, Cho Haewon.”

“I will.” Haewon whispered and closed her eyes.

-----

The dreadful moment of separation came.

“This is her luggage, too.” Inhee called. The cab driver nodded and picked up the suitcase to put it into the trunk. She glanced back to see the tearful goodbyes being exchanged between her niece and the residents of Cheongsangdo Institution.

“Goodbye, Haewon.” Her teachers shook her hand.

“Good luck. You’ll do well wherever you go. If you get famous, don’t forget your Teacher Song.” Mr. Song squeezed her shoulder. Haewon nodded. She couldn’t trust herself to speak. She heard a sniffle nearby.

“Ms. Lee…are you crying?”

“Crying? Oh, heavens no.” She wiped her tears away.

“She’s lying. She’s sobbing.” Mr. Song pointed out.

Ms. Lee glared at him. She looked at Haewon and softened immediately. Ms. Lee embraced her tightly. “Goodbye, Haewon. You are one of my prized students. I will never forget you. Remember, you can do anything you set your mind to. Don’t let your blindness get in the way of your goals.” “I won’t.” She promised.

Ms. Lee released her, and Haewon walked forward. “Hey, guys…”
