The Deepest Dark

Your Words

Sunggyu sat at his dining table, nursing a mild hangover with some medicine and a tall glass of coffee. Woohyun smirked at him, pouring out some milk for himself at the counter.

"Have fun last night, hyung?" he asked mischievously.

Sunggyu chuckled. "Don't even."

"Yah. Are you still trying to 'help this girl', or are you ready to admit you like her?" Woohyun dared, motioning quotation marks in the air.

Sunggyu sighed deeply. "I told you already. I don't like her like that. I just pity her." Besides, she has extra baggage, he added to himself.

Woohyun rolled his eyes. "Whatever, hyung. Go ahead. Keep being stubborn, and see how far that gets you." Sunggyu watched as he meandered out of the kitchen.

When he found himself alone, he reached into his pocket and pulled out a wad of creased papers. He'd swiped them from Mina's apartment before he left, figuring she wouldn't miss them in the mess. He unfolded them and began to read.

The deepest dark is regret

The deepest dark is time lost

The deepest dark is letting time march by, all the while wishing that something once lost will come back.

The deepest dark is wasting time on wishful, impossible thinking.

*******

Someone was knocking hard on her front door, and Mina sat up reluctantly, trying to hold steady her swimming head. "I'm coming!" she yelled in annoyance, before rising with a dangerous teeter.

She tried to look through her peephole, but whoever was on the other side was being a prick and holding his hand against it, keeping her from seeing.

She propped open her door, and her eyes rounded despite the hangover haze. Kim Sunggyu was standing there, holding a large bouquet of white daisies.

She sighed. "What do you think you are doing."

He chuckled. "What do you remember from last night?" At his question, her eyes popped open. I didn't tell him my secret... did I??, she thought. He smirked, and took the moment to push past her and enter her studio.

She watched, wide-eyed, as he made himself at home, digging through her cupboards until he found a vase. To her annoyance, he had a small smile on his dumb face while he arranged the bouquet.

"Sunggyu," she snarled through gritted teeth. "You tell me right now--"

"You should have a seat," he said, beckoning her to the table. "Here. I'll make you some breakfast. Your head probably hurts."

Cautiously, she followed his order, eyeing him as he threw a skillet on the stove. When he opened her fridge, he cocked his head back in surprise. "Chincha... don't you ever go grocery shopping??" he said, shaking his head at the emptiness.

She kept trying to ask about last night, but he kept cutting her off. It wasn't until they sat, eating breakfast together, that she finally seemed to get a word in.

"Now will you tell me what I said last night," she said in a low, angry voice.

Sunggyu had thought about lying, saying that she told him her secret. But for some reason, it was something he wanted to hear her confess honestly. He decided to tell her the truth.

"Nothing, really. Your writing is going well. You know more about Infinite then you want to let on."

He chuckled while she rolled her eyes, rubbing her temple.

"You also mentioned Kibum."

At that, she froze. He watched her, her nose scrunching up slightly as she thought.

"What... what did I say?"

"You called out to him just before you fell asleep."

She lowered her head, letting her hair cascade forward so Sunggyu couldn't see her face. For a moment, she wanted to kick him out of her apartment and tell him never to come near her again. But something in her stopped that. "He was my ex."

"Is he the reason you don't believe in love?"

"...Yeah," she whispered. Then, suddenly, she stood up, and walked quickly to her bedroom. Sunggyu watched, wondering what to do, and then followed.

He peeked into the room, and spotted her sitting at the edge of her bed. She held her forehead in her hands, her back to him. Then, he heard her sniffle, and she seemed to wipe at her face.

Before he could register what he was doing, he strode quickly to her, kneeled before her, and pulled her into his arms. She tensed, pushing a little at his chest, but he didn't let her go. He gently her back and sighed deeply, nuzzling his nose in her hair.

For a moment, he wondered if this was crossing the line, bracing himself for another stinging slap. But to his surprise, a new wave of hot tears hit her, and finally she relaxed in his embrace, weeping into his shoulder.

*******

When she finally stopped sobbing, she told Sunggyu that she just wanted to go back to bed. He let go, instantly feeling a little colder, and tucked her in under the covers. He made to go get her some water and maybe some headache medicine, but suddenly, she grabbed hold of his hand.

"Sunggyu."

He turned to her, a little surprised.

She seemed surprised too, so she quickly let go. She looked away, trying to find the right words, and then gave a tiny smile. "You know, I still might not like you very much. But," she met his eye. "I'm thankful for you."

He chuckled at the crazy girl. He was seeing so many different sides to her, and he had the feeling that it wasn't something a lot of people got to experience. He smiled back at her, watching her eyes shut before he turned to leave.

Chapter 31: This story was so short and sweet! Honestly found the main character a bit annoying at times (because she's so damn /stubborn/) but nevertheless, I understand the reason why she's like that. Also love how caring Sunggyu is in this story huhu. Thank you for writing a story like this! :)
