Water at 99 degrees [Ch 3]
Dear BrideAn awkward silence hung over the pair as Sungjae walked Sooyoung home. Although Sungjae was pleased to find an excuse to be alone with Sooyoung, the silence felt suffocating to him and he found that he was relieved when he reached Sooyoung’s house.
“We’re here. Goodnight, Sooyoung-ah. Hope my hyungs didn't scare you today. Today was the first time you had dinner with them, right?” said Sungjae.
“Yes, it was. Of course they didn't scare me, oppa. Hanging out with them cheered me up a lot today,” replied Sooyoung.
“That’s good. See you next week in school, Sooyoung-ah,” said Sungjae with a smile, as he turned to leave.
To his surprise, Sungjae felt a slight tug on his shirt just as he was about to walk off. Sungjae turned and saw Sooyoung’s extended arm.
“Could you… could you stay with me a while longer, oppa?” asked Sooyoung.
Sungjae understood the meaning behind Sooyoung’s words and said, “Of course, Sooyoung-ah.”
“Can we… can we go for a walk together?” asked Sooyoung.
Sungjae heard the quavery note in Sooyoung’s voice and was thankful that he had a packet of tissues handy with him, as he felt sure that they were going to come in handy soon.
“Sure. Where do you want to go?” asked Sungjae.
“Anywhere is fine. I just need to take my mind off things,” replied Sooyoung, as she started walking off.
They eventually walked past a large tree in the park and stopped to sit under it. The cool night air caressed their cheeks a little, as they sat in silence. After a long while, Sooyoung spoke up.
“Am I a horrible person, oppa?” asked Sooyoung.
“Bwoh?! Of course not! What made you ask that?” asked Sungjae.
“Or am I just silly? Or… or…” began Sooyoung, as tears began to flow down her cheeks uncontrollably.
Sungjae took out the tissue packet in his pocket and offered it to Sooyoung.
“Cry it out, Sooyoung-ah. I’m sure you’ll feel better once you cry everything out,” said Sungjae comfortingly.
Sooyoung broke down completely and, to Sungjae’s surprise and horror, leant on his shoulder, as she cried her heart out. Sungjae put a comforting arm around her and patted her back, as she sobbed.
“How could he do that to me, oppa? We dated for two whole years. How could he… how could he just brush our relationship aside so easily? How could he…?” ranted Sooyoung through her sobs.
Sungjae felt a hot streak of anger flash through him as he listened to Sooyoung.
How could anyone treat a girl like Sooyoung like that? Doesn't he know how lucky he is?
Sooyoung cried for a good twenty minutes before she calmed down. Sungjae handed her his handkerchief and her back gently as she vented all her feelings. Another bout of silence settled over them after Sooyoung calmed down, as she wiped her eyes with the sodden handkerchief. Sungjae waited out the silence, as he had no idea what to say to Sooyoung. After what felt like an eternity, Sungjae finally sneaked a glance at Sooyoung and nearly laughed out loud. Sooyoung had fallen asleep on his shoulder.
She must have tired herself out with all that crying.
Sungjae let her sleep on his shoulder until he felt that it was time for them to head home. Sungjae then tapped her gently on her shoulder to wake her up.
“Sooyoung-ah. It’s getting late, we should get going,” said Sungjae in a gentle voice.
Sooyoung jerked awake and looked horrified with herself. “Did I fall asleep, oppa? Why didn’t you wake me up?”
