CH 12 - Jongwoon
KISMETHe repeated Taeyeon's words in his head. If you want to be the best team, you have to have the best voices.
"And Kyuhyun is definitely one of the best voices, he was actually the best one in the auditions. He is might be better than half of the VAS members to be honest..." Taeyeon said, but only to Jongwoon. Of course she wouldn't say that will all the other members around present. Jongwoon agrees but wouldn't say it out loud. What he verbalized was his thought that Kyuhyun will actually be better than him if ever he was vocally trained.
"Oh don't say that Jongiewoon! Of course not... Well, you two have different vocal tones so it cannot be compared. You will still be my favorite male voice forever, ok?"
"And you're my favorite female voice noona" He said with a smile. He was not soliciting praises but he does like it when others who he respects and deems as talented acknowledges him.
He was letting Taeyeon do the talking and convincing in the cafeteria when they went to Kyuhyun. Everything was going according to plan when a voice shouted his name. He did not expect to see a smiling and hyper-Donghae. Heechul and Jongwoon was not able to say goodbye to the kid when they left they moved to another city. Heechul has wanted this arrangement of moving for almost every 2 years since their parents died. This must be in relation to the fact that their parents were killed, and the murderers were never caught, and so the elder fearing retaliation, decided to never stay long in a place. Or that was what Jongwoon thought. He didn't actually questioned his hyung about it.
It was only when Heechul was on his senior year in highschool, that they have stayed to live in an area for a longer time. It was when Heechul met his bestfriends Taeyeon and Jungsu. Jongwoon was glad that his hyung made friends. They were the primary reason why the brothers entered the university too.
Jongwoon for his part, can easily gain friends. It was his hyung whose attitude is a bit swerving away from the 'normal' so that was why Jongwoon was happy that he made friends who understands his eclectic personality.
Back at the scene at the cafeteria, Taeyeon politely cut his conversation with Donghae and asked them to sit down again. He was a bit startled when Kyuhyun said that it seems like he doesn't want him to join them. Was his face giving it away? Is he really obvious? He denied that idea of course. He told him that all of them, including him, thinks that Kyuhyun's audition is one of the best that they've heard. Then he said the line that Taeyeon told him: "...If we want to be the best, then we need to have the best" He stopped at that, and deliberately cut himself from saying 'and you are the best', because that would be an overkill, right? After what Jongwoon said, he saw Kyuhyun smile. It was an actual smile and not that annoying smirk that he always has with him. Jongwoon thought, this guy might actually be ok, as long as he isn't his cocky and annoyingly rude self...
"I'll do it... Because your club seems to need me so badly"
He controlled his laughter. Yes, this guy will always probably be just his cocky self. Jongwoon should just learn to take his words and quips lightly, because if he take them all seriously, it will still be him who will get irritated at the end of the day anyway. As long as Kyuhyun doesn't go overboard and be harsh or extremely rude, then he guesses he is fine with him. He was just left to wonder though, how it was possible that Changmin, Donghae and Kyuhyun are related to each other. They are totally different from each other. Changmin is a person who has charms and is the gentleman type. Donghae is like a kid, always smiling and hyper. Kyuhyun doesn't seem like he talks much but when he does, he is snarky and sarcastic, well, that's what he thinks in the 2 times that he has encountered him.

It was their first official meeting for Vocal Arts Society. He came in early to be able to prepare all the things that he needs. White board and some markers, lyric sheets, etc. He was writing something on the white-board in front when he heard footsteps. Oh wow, he thought, the guy who declined them at first, is the first came too early for the first meeting. If this was somebody else, he'll probably tease about the other being excited and all that. He wouldn't though, because he knew that this guy his basically Heechul 2.0. He can snap back at everything you have to say.
"Hello Mr. Cho, glad you came"
"Aren't you going to tease me about how excited I seem to be for this first meeting?" It's like he heard Jongwoon's thoughts. "I am not ok? I just have nowhere to hang out anyway. I know that this is an air-conditioned room so..."
"Right, suit yourself" Jongwoon said, and gave a constrained smile. He took out his phone to send text messages to the others to hurry up and come to the room early if they didn't have classes already. Ryeowook replied he'll be there right after buying something.
"Do you like the phone?"
He looked up and saw the smugness in the other's face. Cho Kyuhyun seemed intent to get a reaction from him, he thought, while he o the other hand is trying to disregard the slight annoyance that he feels for him.
"I did remember telling you that you don't have to get me one right? I can buy this myself"
"But I want to"
"Why? You didn't even believe that it was your fault that my phone flew to the pond. You insisted with your qualified apology"
"Well you really seemed upset that day" the other said, voice clear of sarcasm. "What important stuff do you even have in your phone?" Jongwoon thought of all the photos that he had with his friends and boyfriend and brother there. All gone, sadly. "There has been a world where no cellphones existed before, that's why I really don't get the whole dependence of people nowadays with cellphones"
Jongwoon smiled at that, "You sound like an old person Mr. Cho. Do you hate technology and gadgets in general or just cellphones specifically?"
"You are the one who sounds old. "Mister" Cho?" He said while using air quotes when he said 'mister'. "Really? Mister?"
"Alright, Cho. No mister --- Cho. What do you have against cellphones anyway?" Jongwoon thought of his long distance relationship now with Siwon. It would be real difficult for them if they didn't have cellphones. He continued after a pause, "It's easier to communicate with people you care about when they're away if you have this right? God bless the creators of this thing"
"Do you mean, like, your parents being away?"
Jongwoon hesitated. My parents, he thought... How he wished. "Hmm... How I wish that my parents are somewhere which can be reached through phones". Wait, did he say that out loud? He just indirectly shared a very intimate information about him and his parents being gone with this guy. What's wrong with him today? Jongwoon doesn't usually share such personal information easily.
Kyuhyun thankfully did not further ask him anything. After some seconds, Jongwoon decided to go back to what he was writing on the white board.
"You haven't thanked me yet you know. It's the newest model" Kyuhyun said, probably to lighten the mood. He chuckled at that. But when he faced Kyuhyun again, he sported a serious face, and said, "Are you always gonna rub this in my face? Because if you are then I'm going to throw this now"
Kyuhyun laughed at that and countered, "But I am stubborn as hell. I'll just replace that with a new one just to make a point", he said with a smirk. His face became a little serious than usual right after and explained that he was just being his usual sarcastic self when they first met. "I am not really the rude type... although a lot will probably disagree..." Jongwoon found him funny now, trying to explain himself to him.
He further said that he will try to not bother Jongwoon that much anymore.
"Plus I've heard what you can do." Jongwoon didn't understand. What can he do? "Oh, Donghae told us that you took out 3 bullies all at once... My face is too precious to be made a punching bag", Jongwoon burst into a laugh with that. Kyuhyun smiled as he went towards the laughing Jongwoon. He held out a hand and said, "...truce?"
Jongwoon took the hand, smiled back and nodded. Then Kyuhyun titled the hand he was holding and held it higher, seemingly inspecting it or something. "These are really small hands you have in here"
Jongwoon shook his hand away, "You are waging a war again!", he said, but in a light way. Kyuhyun kept on teasing that he couldn't believe how the small hands of his can throw punches. Jongwoon snapped back and said that he can try and punch him just so he will have the idea. And more laughter from both.
