~ emergency ~
The moonlight passed by the glass windows of Kyuhyun’s office. It is already halfway through midnight as he ends his longest shift ever. Finishing a nine-hour surgery plus his usual schedule with his patients and appointments, he thinks it will be a miracle if he won’t collapse on the train.
As he walks the hallway, he decided to pass by to see Ryeowook. It’s been five days since he was scheduled in a graveyard shift to replace one of their staffs who took an emergency leave. He missed seeing his little friend so for the first time in those five days, their shifts meet...briefly. Anyway, everything will be back to normal the day after because the missing staff will finally return.
Since the door was opened he peeped inside only to find Ryeowook dozing off in front of the computer. The lights were turned off except for the one on top of him. His co-staffs were gone and the nurses with the same shift as him might be in the canteen having some coffee or somewhere in the building.
Kyuhyun tiptoed quietly behind him and dug his bag for his jacket. He was supposed to use his coat to keep him warm on the way home but he decided someone needs it more than him. Besides, he is wearing a thick sweatshirt under his white coat that keeps him warm. Kyuhyun wrapped his jacket on the sleeping Ryeowook trying not to wake him by the movements. After that, he left a paper bag beside the computer with a note asking him to open it when he wakes up. He took one last glance at him before he left.
Several hours later, Ryeowook woke up from the sound of a ringing phone. “Ooops I’m sorry I forgot to mute it,” his co-staff apologized before going outside to answer the call.
He gently rubbed his eyes trying to wake himself. He’s been trying hard to adjust to this shift but still he prefers to stay awake at day and sleep at night than vice versa. Well, he can’t really avoid these kinds of situations.
Just as he sits straight he noticed the warm jacket wrapped around him. Smelling the scent he easily recognized it as Kyuhyun’s even without looking at it. He smiled knowing that he was there a while ago and if only he was awake when he passed by then they could have talked for a few moments. He saw the paperbag sitting beside the computer and reached for it. The clumsy handwriting on the note was obviously by Kyuhyun’s. He opened it to see some food for him, some fries, a cheeseburger, a bar of chocolate and two cans of coffee. He was touched by the thoughtful gesture as Kyuhyun had left him food for five nights in a row already. He surely missed eating with him at daytime.
His lips curving into a smile, he sent a thank you text message to Kyuhyun before digging in to his 2am snack.
“You sure you’re alright?” Changmin asked Ryeowook later in the afternoon. After his graveyard shift, he went home at 6am and later coming back at the afternoon to start his regular schedule back. He only went home to rest for awhile before reporting to work halfway through the day.
“I’m used to having lack of sleep when I was in college, it’s not a big deal to me anymore,” he brushed off. “Besides, I didn’t mean to doze off awhile ago at duty. Thankfully nothing interesting happened last night.”
“Oh I happen to doze off at work too... whenever I’m too sleep deprived, but when you’re needed in a surgery my senses automatically wakes up even though I’m tired.”
“You have no choice,” he laughed.
“It takes a lot of sacrifices to be a doctor actually,” Changmin stated knocking at the door before they went inside the room of Soyeon. They came to update Soyeon’s grandma about her health and to bring in the news that she can finally go home next week.
“Good morning Mrs. Jeon. Good morning Soyeon,” Changmin greeted as he approached them.
“Hello ahjussi!!” the little girl gave him her best toothy grin.
“Wow, Soyeon-ah seems to be doing well now,” he smiled brushing off the bangs on the little girl’s forehead.
“Her appetit
