07.12.2015 (Christmas Baking)
Winter WonderlandDaehyun is 12 years old and it's totally about time his mother stops treating him like a child. He's an adult now - almost - so he took the burden of being in charge of the Christmas cookies upon his shoulders and refused to accept any help. Almost. Maybe he ran to the telephone in a mad panic when the oven started spewing out black smoke and thinking back, the cookie dough was more lumpy than smooth like it was supposed to be. And maybe Youngjae isn't the best person to go to when it comes to work in the kitchen but at least Daehyun isn't alone anymore.
They're sitting together at the kitchen table, their heads stuck together over the book with cookie recipes, trying to find the easiest to make. Youngjae suggests to make simple sugar cookies and Daehyun protests. Sure, he wants something easy but that is too easy and he wants to make nice cookies for his parents. But then his eyes fall on the cookie cutters in all shapes and suddenly, the idea of sugar cookies doesn't seem too bad anymore.
Daehyun mixes the sugar and the butter together while Youngjae cracks the eggs. There are shells in the egg mixture and Youngjae tries to pick them out, first with a fork and then with his fingers, it looks gross and a part of him is happy that he left the task of the eggs to his best friend. He doesn't want to have cookies with egg shells so he is thankful and tells Youngjae to wash his hands when he announces that the eggs are 'clean' now.
It takes a while to mix all the ingredients together but the dough is firm and Daehyun can roll it out on the counter without any problems. Okay, maybe he rolls out the sheet a little bit too much and it gets so thin that the dough rips and he has to knead it together and roll it out again but overall, Daehyun is satisfied. They pick the cookie cutters they want to use, a Christmas tree, a star, a snowflake, a little gingerbread man and a heart for special cookies for his mother. Youngjae peels off the stars and snowflakes and puts them on the baking tray carefully and Daehyun is in charge of the gingerbread men and heart cookies.
“It looks like you,” Youngjae says and points at the cookie Daehyun just placed on the baking tray. Youngjae pokes at the cookie and Daehyun slaps his hand away. “Stop that! I don't want to make them all again, you are such a child!” Youngjae sticks out his tongue but he doesn't try to deform Daehyun's cookies anymore. That's what Daehyun thinks, at least. He is just a little bit suspicious when Youngjae volunteers to put the tray into the oven but Daehyun is busy gathering the leftovers to get even more cookies.
When Daehyun takes out the tray again (the cookies are a little bit dark around the edges but they are still edible in Daehyun's opinion) he notices immediately that something is wrong. All Gingerbread men have strangely big heads and Daehyun knows exactly why. Youngjae poked two holes that are supposed to be eyes into every single of these cookies. Daehyun glares at his best friend but Youngjae looks around innocently, as if he hasn't done anything - Daehyun wouldn't let this slip.
They clean up the kitchen while they wait for the cookies cool down so they can decorate them with icing and chocolate, Daehyun promised his mother he wouldn't leave a mess behind and he wants her to smile when she comes back home from work. His mother bought a pack of coloured tubes with cookie icing, both of them fight over the blue tube but Daehyun wins and Youngjae pouts. Youngjae takes yellow instead and starts drawing shapes on the star cookies. He is so concentrated that he doesn't notice the shadow on his left when Daehyun sneaks up closer. The attack comes without warning and Youngjae's originally yellow cookies have stripes of blue and red all over them.
Youngjae's jaw drops but he recovers soon and jumps in for a counter attack on Daehyun's cookies. The result of it is a mess, not only on the cookies but also on the just cleaned kitchen counter but Daehyun's mother laughs when she sees the colourful Christmas cookies, assuring Daehyun that these are the best cookies she has ever eaten. Maybe Daehyun and Youngjae are not the best cookie baker but they had a lot of fun and their personal touch made the cookies special just the way they are.
