At Odds

Hi guys! I know you had expected two updates last week and I wasn’t able to finish because I wasn’t feeling well T^T. But I have managed to get Chap 14 out today. Hopefully, I would be a lot better tomorrow (I blame my boss for this hahaha).

And I made a little change on Haru’s age on chapter 13. I guessed my calculation is totally off, lol. So I have made him only going to turn two years old in the story. Anyway, here’s some visuals for baby Haru. They are too cute haha!

Thanks to Kebberhiatus for the first pic.

Yeah, it was a good bribe haha  ♥

=============================================================================================================

Whatever description she had already created to put on her article flew out of her brain after the  unbelievable, almost to the point of preposterous, occurrence that had transpired in her home earlier today. She had been sitting on the bar stool for the last 2 hours now with her laptop open and the bar table scattered with her papers, both new and crumpled. She had her hands clasped with her forehead creased as it kept replaying in her mind. Donghae’s shocked face, him walking out without a word…. If he thinks she would run after him and explain or try to get him to believe Haru’s his, which is really evident on the boy’s face, then he’s got another think comin’.

She doesn’t know what to feel on the fact that Donghae left without saying anything. Without even asking anything about Haru. Even if he’s shell-shocked of having an offspring with who he considered a crazy woman and one he vowed to get back on, he should at least see his son. But no. He just walked out.

It almost seems laughable really on how she worried herself on the moment that Donghae would know he’s got a son when it looks like he doesn’t even care. . If Donghae doesn’t want Haru, then it’s his loss and her gain.

I would hurt you in ways that I know you would.

Donghae’s words rang in her ears as she heard the muffled laughter of Haru inside his room, no doubt playing with Becky, but she shook them off. No. Deep down inside her, she knows Donghae wouldn’t use an innocent child in his ploy to get back at someone. At least, the Donghae she knows would never do that.

She closed her eyes as she threaded her fingers through her hair not wanting to think about this anymore. Every damn shadows in her life is coming back to haunt her. What’d she ever do? She let out a heavy sigh when she heard her doorbell chimed and she got off the stool feeling her shoulders so stopped from too much emotional load she’s carrying lately. She went to peer on the window next to the door to see who could be ringing her doorbell and her heart stopped. Donghae was standing in front of it carrying two big bags. He saw her face from the window but he didn’t say anything and just gave her a pointed look. Dara stepped back, her mind running again as fast as her heartbeat is. The sight of him in her front door after earlier Is so unexpected. She swallowed first before slowly unlocking the door and opening it.

Donghae stood there with an unfathomable expression but his eyes looked pointedly at her. Dara met his gaze evenly without flinching.

“Did you ever plan on telling me about my son?” Donghae demanded after a moment of silence between them.

“Why should I tell when you weren’t even asking?” Dara bit back.

Donghae looked at her in disbelief. “How should I know what to ask when I didn’t even know?!”

Dara scoffed. “Maybe you should’ve started with asking how have I been that day you saw me  instead of going all I will take my revenge on you kind of .”

“Would you have told me then if I did?” Donghae said with his jaw clenched.

“No,” Dara answered without a pause before turning her back on him.

Donghae followed inside lugging the two big heavy bags and placing it the floor before grabbing Dara’s arm and making her face him. “You have been hiding him for two years! And if I didn’t went up the hill, I never would’ve known! Are you going to hide him from me for the rest of his life?”

“I wasn’t hiding him from you,” Dara repeated what she had told Kwanghee. “I’m just not telling you about him. There’s a difference.”

“It’s the ing same!” Donghae’s veins is popping out of his neck and Dara guessed he was keeping himself from shouting at her.

Dara crossed her arms over her chest as she fixed him with her most deathly glare. “Who told me to stay the away from him, huh?” The pent up anger is erupting inside her. “Who tried to offer me his money so I would disappear from his life?” She felt like she wanted to punch him but she settled on pushing him hard on his shoulder but he didn’t step back. His jaw was clenched tight as he fell silent. “Who told me he would do anything to get rid of me? Huh? Huh?!” She repeatedly pushed him hard on the shoulder with her hand as she said that wanting to strike him hard just to let him feel what she had felt. “And you’re asking me why I didn’t tell you? You think I want my son to be subjected to that?!”

Dara was too livid to notice the change of expression on Donghae’s face, going from furious to grave.  He stared at her as he responded quietly, “I would never do that my son.”

“How gallant of you,” Dara said sarcastically. “Do you want me to thank you?”

Donghae watched her fuming face a moment before averting his gaze on the floor, his forehead  creased slightly. Dara let out a big breath regretting her show of temper. Last thing she wanted is for Donghae to find out how it had pained her before and how it still pains her now. “I’m not going to deny you your son.” Donghae lifted his eyes at her and Dara continued, “I wasn’t planning to tell you, yes. But I wasn’t hiding him. Because if I dd, you would never have seen him. Ever. You’re free to see him whenever you want.” She crossed her arms. “Just make sure I’m already off to work or somewhere and I wouldn’t have to see your face.”

He lifted his eyes to look at her with an expression Dara couldn’t tell. Guilt maybe.

“What’s his name?” Donghae asked quietly after a second.

“Haru.”

Donghae nodded as he repeated in a whisper, “Haru.” Then he looked at Dara. “I want to see him.” His voice cracked a little.

Feeling the torrent of anger is already dying out on her, Dara spun around and went to Haru’s room. She found Haru playing with his toy cars with Becky. “Haru, there’s someone here for you.”

Haru grinned up at her but disregarded what she said as he lifted his toy car and showed it to her with a string of jumbled words then laughed as he put it on the bed again and moved it with his hands. Dara sighed knowing there’s nothing that could distract him when he’s playing so she walked inside and sat on the bed while Becky moved on the corner.

“Haru, your…” She rolled her tongue feeling awkward of saying the word but she did it anyway. “Your papa’s here.”

“Mama look!” Haru lifted the toy car again with a laugh then moved it on the bed again and Dara smiled at whatever amusement Haru is getting from moving the car on the bed. A rustle form the door made her look up and she found Donghae already standing there, his eyes on Haru. She could see the longing in them and Dara knew whatever worries she might have had of Donghae hurting Haru is nothing but a needless one. She turned back to Haru and leaned forward. “Haru look. Papa’s here.” She pointed Donghae while she put her arms around Haru. Haru looked up at where his mom is pointing at and grinned again as he showed Donghae his toy car. “Papa! Papa!” He repeated after Dara like it was a new word he learned before moving the car on the bed again.

If Donghae could cry at that moment without embarassing himself, he would. Just the sound of Haru’s laugh is making him proud. The sound of Papa in his mouth is making him believe in miracles. He walked inside the room and reluctantly sat on the bed across from Haru. He looked at Dara who was watching him. She no longer had that glare in her eyes. Just a gauging look.

“I didn’t know what he plays with,” he told her. “So I bought every toy I can get.”

Oh, so that’s what the two big bags are for. “He plays with everything. But he’s fond of balloons at the moment."

Donghae leaned over to have his face level Haru’s. “Haru, I got some balloons. Do you want it?”

Dara rolled her eyes. “I just told you he’s fond of balloons. Of course he want it.”

Donghae found himself scowling at her but he continued to coax Haru to come with him outside. “C’mon Haru. Let’s play. It’s outside.”

“Oh yeah, because it’s not inside so of course it’s outside,” Dara muttered.

“Would you shut the he….” His voice trailed off as he glared at Dara. “I’m trying to be a father here.”

“Don’t make Haru like an I D I O T,” Dara said spelling the word out.

“He’s a kid,” Donghae said wryly.

“Exactly. I don’t want him growing up to be like you,” Dara said getting another one of the cars on the bed and playing it with Haru.

Donghae just stared at her in disbelief. What the…. Whatever guilt he had felt earlier just disappeared. There were times like now when he really wanted to shake her. He thought with Haru they could at least become civil. He thought they could be at impasse for the meantime. He went so far as to decide to put his plans of getting his revenge on hold. But it seems like Dara is not ready for a temporary ceasefire.

“C’mon Haru. Let’s go outside, okay?” Dara said smiling at Haru as she started to put her hands under Haru’s armpits to lift him.

“Yeah, because we’re inside,” Donghae quipped sarcastically. Two can play at that game. But Dara just ignored him when she lifted Haru.

“Ah so heavy!” Dara said nuzzling him on the cheek and Haru giggled. It surprised Donghae when Dara placed Haru in his lap and told him, “I hope you already ate because I only got three plates.”

But Donghae missed that jibe as he looked at Haru who was looking up at him with wonder in his eyes. He barely noticed Dara going out of the room followed by Becky as he put his hands on Haru’s arms to steady him. Haru smiled with only two of his front teeth visible. “Papa?”

Donghae’s breath wooshed out of his mouth as he let out a small elated chuckle. If he could describe what he’s feeling right now, there wouldn’t be any words to actually fit the feeling. “Yes,” he choked. “Papa.”

Toys were scattered all over the living room as Haru gleefully played all of them while Donghae played and laughed with him. Haru is practically swimming amidst all the toys Donghae brought him but the one Haru put his most attention to is the balloons that Donghae has been blowing on to make it puff out.  Each time the balloon gets bigger, Haru squealed while jumping up and down like it was some kind of an amazing feat his father is accomplishing. Dara had been alternately watching them and going over her article on the bar across from them. She looked up when she heard Donghae laugh out loud as Haru jumped over him while he sat cross legged on the floor making him fall back. The balloon he was working on whizzed as it flew and Donghae wrapped his arms around him and tickling him at the same time. Haru was giggling, his little body squirming. For anyone it would’ve been heart warming to watch.

Oh, who was she kidding? Yes, it’s heartwarming to watch the father bond with his son. Especially when the look of fondness is evident on Donghae’s face and the way Haru is responding to him like he had known him all his life. She silently sighed as she tried to vanquish the feelings that is being rattled to come alive inside her. It doesn’t change anything, okay? She told herself. We’re just on a temporary truce for the moment. She went back into typing on his macbook.

“Dara unnie,” Becky said. “Food’s ready.”

“Thank you,” Dara said getting off her stool as she called Haru. “Haru, time to eat. C’mon.”

She had to call him three times before Donghae let him sit up. “Time to eat,” he told Haru. Haru had a big grin on his face and he scrambled to get on his feet. “Papa! Papa! Eat!” He took Donghae’s hand and Donghae stood up while Haru pulled him towards Dara’s small dining room. Donghae smirked at her. “Guess you need an extra plate.”

Dara scowled at him as she scooped up Haru and let him sit on the high chair. Becky placed a plate of rice and vegetables on the table for Haru and Haru shook his head when he saw it.

“Pridge! Mama pridge!” He was kicking his legs. “Keken! Pridge and keken.”

Donghae’s brows furrowed in puzzlement. “He wants the fridge and the what?”

“Porridge and the chicken,” Dara answered as she went to the stove to get Haru his porridge.

“Ahhh,” Donghae said understanding.

“Papa eat!” Haru said when Dara placed the porridge on the feeding seat with the strips of chicken. He used his hand to get the chicken.

“No. Use a spoon,” Dara said handing him the baby spoon but Haru just shook his head as he put the chicken in his mouth with his fingers.

“Eat! Keken thush,” Haru said.

Donghae just nodded his head with a grin and looked at Dara for the translation. Dara rolled his eyes as she tried to put a bib around Haru’s neck. “Chicken delicious.”

“Yes, chicken is delicious!” Donghae agreed. Haru laughed kicking his legs again and reaching for the bowl of porridge.

“What’d I say Haru, use a spoon.” She placed the spoon on Haru’s hand and Haru awkwardly used it as he tried to scoop up the porridge and the chicken but using his other hand to place the strip onto the spoon. Donghae chuckled at that. “That’s my boy.”

“No, Haru.” She glared at Donghae. “Don’t encourage him. I’m trying to teach him to eat with a spoon.”

“He’s two,” Donghae said. “Two year olds use their hands to get the feel of things.”

“Oh I suppose you had a lot of two year olds to know that,” Dara retorted.

“Contrary to your belief, I was once two years old.”

“Oh that’s not hard to believe since you still are.”

They both glared at each other with Becky just watching them while trying to guide Haru in using his spoon. Her phone rang and Dara glared at him one last time before going to the bar where her phone is along with scattered papers and answered. It was Kwanghee.

“Yes?”

“Dara! Haven’t heard from you today. How’d the Ocular Shoot go?”

“As if you haven’t heard it from Joross yet,” she answered in a whisper as she went to the living room so she wouldn’t be overheard.

Donghae just watched her walking with the phone in her hand then sighing, he returned his attention to Haru, sitting on the chair and scooting it over to him as he tried to help him eat his porridge.

“Not really,” Kwanghee was saying to Dara. “He didn’t go into details but he said everything went fine in the end. And that my dear alarmed my pretty bells. What happened?”

Dara sighed heavily. “What else? He was there.”

“Really?” Kwanghee didn’t need to ask who he is. “I thought you said he wouldn’t be there that’s why you chose that time.”

“Yeah that’s what I thought but unfortunately, he seems to have some kind of a cataclysmic power to appear on places I don’t want him to.” She leaned on the wall as she watched Donghae intently trying to teach Haru to use his baby spoon.

“Hmmm,” Kwanghee said. “Are you sure it’s not because he wants to be where you are? Because you know, I remembered when I first started to like Jo Kwon and I’ve been following him everywhere just to make myself visible in his line of vision and—“

“Yeah and he t

Chapter 23: this was such an emotional journey. there were moments that made me laugh, cry and even angry. at some point, i was frustrated at both Donghae and Dara, Donghae for most of the times. i'm glad that this story has a happy ending. even though things happened and some things didn't happen, it was beautiful on it's own. this is the second time i'm reading a memory loss story from you. both are incredible.
I was commenting on every chapter but then i realized that it was too much. all i could see were my comments so i stopped. i could have filled the comment section with a lot of spoilers (though i try not to do that).
anyways, this story is superb. how one accident happened and their beautiful realtionship fell apart.
it ended well though and that's a good thing.
i was reading at night and when it came to the eighth chapter, i ended up crying. i knew something bad was going to happen.
