À Toi, Pour Toujours
La Petite MortApril, 5, 2015 (14 days before death).
When Luhan is called to the stands, he finds himself nervous. It's the first time he'll have to talk to a group of people. It's the first time he'll actually be the center of attention. The thought of messing up scares him, though he's not sure what there is to mess up on. The only thing he can provide is the truth, and he hopes that justice will come with that.
“Xiao Luhan, do you swear to tell the truth; nothing but the truth, so help you, God?”
“I do.”
“Have you ever met Do Kyungsoo?” Luhan looks out to the bench to find the face that would torment him for days to come, but he sees no one. The defendant's bench is empty aside from a hasty lawyer who looks too relaxed to be defending the person he was surely assigned to.
“I have not.”
“But you have heard of him?”
“I have. From a...a friend.”
“Could you tell me who that friend is?”
“Kim Joonmyeon, your honor.” It's a lie, and not Luhan's lie. He feels bad about dragging Joonmyeon into this, but Sehun speaks before he can come up with a better response.
“Luhan, do you find it possible that Joonmyeon had connections with Do Kyungsoo that may have led to his death?”
“No, your honor. He was a good kid. He-he always stayed out of trouble.”
“But he did tell you about Do Kyungsoo, a man whose notoriety is not yet visible; is that correct?”
“It is, but-”
“Luhan, are you aware that Kim Joonmyeon was planning to drop out of Westerbury on the day of his death? If I'm not mistaken, your fingerprints were found on the car that he and another student ran away in.”
“I-I was trying to help them. I didn't do anything.”
“Yet, you left them lying there after finding them dead, and didn't call authorities?”
“I didn't...I was-”
“Mr. Xiao, it's becoming clear to me that you don't know much of anything about this series of murders, though you are heavily involved with them.” L
