Donghae’s P.O.V.

The twins were gone…

That was all Donghae could think of the last few minutes.

Minhee was crying in front of him while everyone tried to process what was just happening.

Meanwhile Charly and Lissy had been coming up after they heard Donghae scream and Minhee and Jaeden cry.

The little boy came running up to his best friends sister and hugged her tight.

He was just as afraid as anyone. Usually Jinwook told him everything, but somehow he didn’t this time.

“Oppa?”, Minhee called out for him in a broken, small voice, showing how much she must be suffering right now and still Donghae couldn’t answer.

His body and tongue felt like they were lamed.

It wasn’t until she put her arms around his neck and started sobbing again, that he got back to reality.

“Do-do you h-hate m-me no-ow Oppa?”, the little girl asked concerned.

Hugging her back, Hae finally realized what he was doing and it wasn’t good. He had to stay strong and give the children the feeling of security.

At least they shouldn’t be out of line like he felt.

Looking at Sungmin, the blonde just gave him a small nod, showing he thought the same.

“No I don’t hate you little one. I was just thinking. How could that happen? Didn’t your brothers tell me where they wanted to go?”

“I had t-to go to the toilet and then I-I went to the kit-chen to g-get them the o-orange juice they want-ed. But … but as I got b-back they were gone…”

With that Minhee started to cry again and Donghae just held her.

“I am so sorry Oppa. I really watched after them… I swear!”

Patting her back and trying to calm the shaking girl in his arms down, the brunet said:

“Shh-shh everything will be fine my little princess. Sungmin-Oppa and I will go out and look for them. It is not your fault and if you are good now and go to your room with Miss Lissy and Charly, I am sure we will find Wookie and Jaejae pretty soon, neh? Just calm down. Donghae is here, nothing will happen I promise.”

Looking up at him with big eyes, the girl asked:

“Really Oppa?”

Smiling at her to make her feel save, he said:

“Yes I promise and now go and play with the others. We will find them.”

“Neh, Oppa.”

And then she was gone, walking out of the room with Charly and the Martin brothers.

Only Jaeden was still there.

“Hyung?”

“Yes Dino?”

“Nothing bad happened to Wookie right? I mean they just went out playing right?”

“Yes Jaeden don’t worry. Sungmin Hyung and I will find them and now be a good boy and help Minhee to calm down.”

“Neh Hyung.”

Before the boy left, he added:

“And Sungmin-Hyung?”

“Yes?”

“Thank you for visiting today. I had a lot of fun and please find Wookie and Jaemin.”

“Sure thing young man and now do me a favor and protect Minhee while we are gone. Can you do this for me?”

Nodding eagerly the kid rushed out of the room, leaving the young adults behind.

After a few moments he heard Sungmin speak up again.

“Hey Hae are you ok?”

Sighing the brunet turned around and faced his friend.

“I try Minnie. I just don’t know what to do…”

“Just get your warm clothes so we can go out and look for them.”

“Neh Hyung.”

They were about to get going when they heard a announcement on the radio.

“Hey everybody out there. This is Jack for you again. We just received a warning that there will be a snow storm coming up in San Leandro pretty soon. So make sure you are at home and drink some hot tea. Let’s hope it won’t last long…”

No longer listening Donghae started to panic … again.

“You heard that Hyung?! There is a snow storm coming and the twins are outside alone!! What should we do? What am I supposed to do?! They never went out before, without telling me where they wanted to go!!”

Feeling a sharp pain in his left cheek Hae stared at his friend quite shocked.

Had he just slapped him?

“Donghae, would you just calm down for Christ’s sake?! They won’t come back if you start to lose your head and mind! What do think you will reach, if you don’t even know what you are doing? So man up, now will you?! I won’t let you go before you calmed down and that’s final!”

Pouting, but still doing as Sungmin told him, he took a few deep breaths and forced himself to relax and start to focus.

“Good now think of the eventualities where they could have gone to. You know them better than anyone else.”

“You are right Hyung, but look they even forgot their coats! They are outside in the cold without any warm clothing! We need to hurry!”

And with that Donghae was done talking.

His babies were somewhere outside in San Leandro, with no one to protect them and a snow storm was coming up. He had to react.

He heard the other calling after him, but didn’t want to stop until Sungmin had caught up with him, holding him back by his wrist.

“For heavens sake Donghae, slow down or else you will get hurt!”, the blonde panted.

“I don’t care! They are out there without anything to wear! So you will come and help me look for them, or I will do it myself. We don’t have much time left until it is getting dark and the snow storm is coming too!”

“Huh okay then, you go ahead”, the elder sighed.

He knew he couldn’t calm his friend right now, but wasn’t able to leave him either.

Donghae couldn’t calm down, no matter how hard he tried. It was driving him crazy, because he knew he and Min wouldn’t be enough to look for the twins.

So what to do?

After thinking for quite a few minutes a name popped up in his head.

Heechul.

If one could help him now it was his diva cousin and his long known friend and Hyung.

Pulling out his cell phone and dealing the number he pressed the call button.

After a few seconds a mocking, but warm voice sounded from the other end of the line.

“Best Hyung in the whole universe, what can I do for you?”

“Heechul you need to help me!! I-I … the twins.. the snowstorm… “

“Hey hold it Donghae… what is happening right now? Why are you panting so hard? What is it with Wookie and Jaejae?”, the concerned man asked.

Donghae was his favorite little Dongsaeng and every time he was troubled, Heechul was as well.

You could have said he was like an overprotective mother.

“The twins ran away and I don’t know where they went. Sungmin and I are looking for them all over the place, but we are not enough. I don’t know what to do! We need to find them! There is a snowstorm coming up and if we can’t find them… please help me!”

“You stay right there, you got that? I will get Hangeng and then we will come and help you! Give me Sungmin!”

“Yes Hyung… Min? Heechul wants to talk to you.”

With that the brunet gave his cellphone to his friend and listened to the conversation.

“Yes… thank you Heechul… no I didn’t… yes I will take care of him… thank you again… see you in a few.”

“What did he want?”

“He just made sure I will look after you until he arrives and told me to keep you right here.”

“Huh I hope he will be fast enough”, he sighed.

“He always is Donghae. He always is.”

After 15 minutes a concerned Heechul came running with a more or less awake Hangeng stumbling after him.

“Hyung!”, the brunet called out and hugged his cousin with all of his might, the elder soothingly caressing his hair.

“It is okay I am here now and I brought Hanni along. Now tell me what you need us for.”

Looking at his cousins friend and colleague, Donghae smiled at the tall man and started talking.

“Jinwook and Jaemin just ran away and we don’t know where to look first, so please help us to find them, because four eyes won’t be enough.”

“Got it. Hangeng and I will go right and you will go left. If we split up I am sure we can look for them more efficiently. Right Geng?”

“Alright Chul, whatever you say. Let’s go.”

“So we will take the left part then. Call us if you found them”, Sungmin said and started walking.

When they hadn’t found them after an hour, the blonde proposed for him and his younger friend to search in separate areas as well.

“There is no use in it Hae, I will go west and you will go east. If we haven’t found the twins until 10 o’clock we will meet in front of the church, got it?”

Donghae just nodded and left. With every second he got more worried and frustrated with himself that he couldn’t find Jaejae and Wookie.

He started running through the streets, like a lost puppy, bumping into a lot of people, while tears were falling down from his cheeks. He was so afraid that something might have happened to the boys.

They would never run away without telling him where they wanted to go, so why? Why did they let his worst nightmare come true? He didn’t want to lose them.

Not before Christmas and not on any other day in his whole life.

Searching for them about another hour by now Donghae’s knees gave in from exhaustion.

They weren’t in front of the church, nor the shopping mall or the market. Kneeling on the iced streets he tried to get up again, but failed. The long running took nearly all his strength.

But he didn’t want to rest, he couldn’t.

The twins were most important!

Gaining all his willpower he got up and wanted to walk into a different direction, when he saw a man carrying two little bodies enveloped into a blanket.

Could it be? Not really but maybe… just maybe an angel just heard his prayers and helped him to find his beloved twins.

Screaming on the top of his lungs, the brunet tried to catch up with the man, but he was far away and the streets were iced, so it was hard to not lose balance.

Especially with his muscles feeling like jelly from all the emotions rushing through his body right now.

After he managed to get near the person, hopefully carrying the boys he’d been looking for for hours, he called out their names again.

“Wookie!! Jaejae!!”

The man stopped and turning around.

Donghae’s heart felt like it was bursting from all the relief he felt when he ran up to the man, who just got on his knees to let them down.

Kneeling down as well, the brunet took the twins into a tight embrace.

“Appa!”, Jinwook cried while Jaemin was clenching his neck, crying on his shoulder.

Tears of joy and relief left his eyes, as he held them in his arms, knowing they were safe.

After a while he looked them in the eyes and stated to scold them with a soft voice, too happy to actually sound angry, but he had to tell them if they did something wrong.

“Jaejae, Wookie… I was so worried about you! Never ever do this again, you hear me?! Are you alright? Here put your coats on. How could you even run out of the house without dressing properly?! And what about your sister? You should have told her where you wanted to go!”

“Yes appa we are sorry…”, they said with teary eyes, showing all of their regret and fright they felt.

“Huh it is okay come here and give me another hug”, Donghae said, smiling softly.

After a few minutes he let go of the boys and lifted his head to face the man, who had saved them and was still standing in front of them, watching their little reunion.

And to say it with one word, he was simply stunned.

The man in front of him was just beautiful and quite attractive as well.

His blonde dyed hair was covering some parts of his dark eyes, but suited him perfectly.

He was just about his own height and thin but not skinny.

His sharp jawline was the perfect contrast to the milky white skin, he somehow wanted to touch but hold himself back.

Getting up on his feet, Donghae smiled at the stranger, walked up to him and bowed 90 degrees.

“Thank you very much for saving these two. I don’t know how to thank you Mr…”

“Hyukjae. Lee Hyukjae”, a soft, low voice said, sending shivers down the brunets spine.

Damn it he really had to get a hold of himself, what was wrong with him?

Smiling again to cover his emotions he held out a hand Hyukjae took in his and said:

“Thank you Mr. Lee. I am Donghae. Lee Donghae. I guess you are from Korea too?”

Receiving a nod, he just smiled again, thinking that the confusion on the others face was quite cute.

“Well anyway thank you so much again. Let me treat you to a hot chocolate as a thanks. You must feel cold by now and I want to thank you properly.”

Slapping himself mentally, Donghae just congratulated his stupid brain and mouth to say such childish things. Treating a grown up man to a hot chocolate was of course the first thing everyone would appreciate… but the orphanage didn’t have coffee anyway.

“That won’t be necessary, thank you. I loved to help them out.”

Suddenly the brunet felt his heart clench a little bit. Of course this guy with the dark orbs and beautiful gummy smile he was flashing to the twins now, wouldn’t want to accompany them. Why should he? His girlfriend was probably waiting somewhere, hoping he will get back soon.

So there was nothing he could do, when he watched the blonde getting on his knees, ruffling through the boys hair, saying goodbye. And still… somehow he couldn’t accept it and tried one last time to convince Hyukjae to just stay with them a little longer.

“But still I insist on it. Please? And I am sure Minhee would love to get to know you too. And the boys seem to like you too, right?”, he said facing the twins in front of him.

“Neh Hyung. Please come with us”; Wookie said with his famous puppy eyes, making everyone melt.

Hearing the other sigh he could see how he was giving in to the child’s cuteness and Donghae thanked his little boy once more for being with him.

He really was the luckiest person alive sometimes, because he had just found the perfect guy as it seemed.

“Okay, okay I will come with you but you have to stop looking at me with this expression young man”, Hyuk said laughing, making the twins nod their heads fast.

How could they be so adorable? But Donghae already stopped to ask himself this question, because he knew he would never get a satisfying answer.

Jinwook lifted his arms to the blonde, showing him that he wanted to be carried.

Doing as the boy wanted, Hyukjae bent down and lifted him up, facing the brunet again.

“Let’s get going then, you lead the was Donghae-shi.”

Laughing at the formal languages the other used he responded:

“Drop the ‘shi’, since you don’t seem to be much older or younger than I am. Donghae is just fine.”

Getting Jaemin up as well he took out his cellphone to call Sungmin and tell him that he had found the boys, now that everything had calmed down a bit.

So he turned around and said:

“Please excuse me for a second but I have to make a call to say I’ve found them.”

Receiving a nod, he smiled and dialed the blondes number. After a few ringing sounds the other picked up.

“Donghae! Is everything alright? Did you find the twins?!”

“Yes Minnie everything is fine. I will bring them home now.”

“Huh thank the heavens. I will call Heechul for you so please be safe until you get home. We will meet at the orphanage. Hurry up.”

“Thank you. See you later”, with that he hung up and send an apologetic smile to Hyukjae.

He somehow felt guilty for taking so much time from him and still he was happy to have him around.

Walking side by side in silence, Donghae looked at the blonde from time to time and every time he did so, he couldn’t help but adore the others features. He somehow was a lucky guy. And he knew he was only repeating himself but he couldn't help it.

After a few minutes his phone rang again, causing them to stop on their way.

Looking at the caller ID he sighed.

It was Heechul.

A probably pissed Heechul, because he didn’t call him in the first place.

Get ready for the diva, he thought and picked up.

“Yes Hyung?”

“Sungmin said you found them is that right? Please tell me he’s right Hae-baby!” Aish that guy always calling him baby. Sometimes Heechul would have been better off born as a girl.

“Yes it is.”

“Really?!”

“Yah, Kim Heechul, would you calm down?! Yes I found them or do you think Minnie would joke around about it? Seriously use your brain Hyung.”

“Yah watch your mouth you little brat. I was dying with concern and that’s how I get treated by you…”

“Huh, stop whining Hyung, we both know the only thing you are concerned about again, now that everything is alright, are the wrinkles on your forehead.”

“Is that how you show your thankfulness Lee Donghae? If yes you should get prepared for getting me out into this ty weather and on top of that I even got Hanni along. Just wait until you get to the orphanage, young man.”

“Whatever Hyung see you later.”

Hae knew it sounded rude but he would rather deal with an upset Kim Heechul than a concerned and worried one, because then the diva turned into a real pain in the , complaining all the time, driving you crazy. So he just helped the poor Hangeng with making his cousin angry, giving the other tall man some space to calm down.

But he couldn’t help but to send Hyuk another apologetic look.

“I am sorry but Heechul is a bit different sometimes and noisy”, he said, making a face that showed exactly what he was thinking.

Hearing the other chuckle about that he smiled himself.

“It is fine don’t worry, my Noona can be just as annoying herself so I know what you are talking about.”

“Thanks”, was all he could answer, feeling relieved.

With that they just continued walking in silence, because the snowstorm had got a lot more worse and it was important to focus on the streets, to find their way home.

They hurried to get to the orphanage as fast as possible and after some more minutes they finally reached it.

Seeing the shocked expression of the other looking at the old house, Donghae tried to reassure him that it wasn’t as bad as it seemed.

“I know it doesn’t really please the eye but at least it is warm and cozy… you just wait until you get to know the others and you will see it isn’t as lonely as it looks like, when it is filled with laughter and all that.”

Receiving a nod they walked up to the building and as soon as they did, the door was slammed open and a furious Heechul came storming out. But instead of punching him, Donghae was pulled into a death hug.

So he is planning to suffocate me? Good thing Jaemin is still in between us...

Soon they got interrupted by a bunch of kids running up to them as well.

Being the kind person he was, the brunet welcomed them all into a hug, releasing Jaejae from his arms.

“Oppa you are back!”, Minhee screamed giving him a hug.

“You found them. Thank you. Thank you so much”, she sobbed.

“Now, now young Lady. Don’t cry. I promised you I would find them now didn’t I?”, he answered, drying her tears with both of his thumbs.

Before he talked to all the children he turned around to Hyuk, facing him in an understanding manner when he saw his shocked expression.

That’s what everyone did when they realized where they lived.

He knew these expressions all too well, because he had to experience them too when he had been a child.

It was pity.

Pity for being an orphan.
