Drabble 18 // Wolves

     "Race you there!" Jimin exclaimed, dashing through the wood on four paws. Leaping through gaps between tall trees, skidding through muddy puddles to slide under fallen branches, jumping over large stones, squeezing between narrow ways and barely making it over high hills to reach the clearest lake in the middle of the forest, Taehyung was beside Jimin the whole way. The two reached their destination, panting before collapsing and breaking into laughter. Howls of joy echoed around them. Jimin rolled over sideways to headbutt Taehyung in the belly, the latter giggling at the tickling touch. 

"Come on, let's get a drink." Jimin exhaled before rising to his feet and walking up to the water edge calmly. Taehyung nudged him as he bent down and gave him a sudden stern look. Jimin paused. "What's wrong?"

Taehyung's eyebrows furrowed. "Don't you think it's weird there's no other animals out here?" 

Jimin chuckled. "No, no one dares to be out here when they see two wolves around. They're probably hiding in the bushes behind us." 

Taehyung stayed alert, glancing around them before leaning down to up sips of water. Jimin watched his friend patiently, smiling admirably at the beautiful side view matched perfectly with the moonlight, even the flawless reflection glimmered on the water face below them. He was about to inch closer and nuzzle into Taehyung's fuzzy coat when he caught a glimpse of something unusual in the corner of his eye. "Tae- I think...I saw something." He said softly, hesitating movement as sprinkles of fear immobilized his legs momentarily. The latter stopped drinking and raised his head as naturally as possible, glancing casually in the direction of their fear. 

"Get them!" They heard as two men stepped out of the dark and swung ropes at them. Jimin leaped away and began escaping, stopping suddenly when he realised Taehyung wasn't with him. He shot his head back and saw the latter's paws struggling furiously against the ground as ropes pulled against his skin. He was weak, then Jimin realised: the water. The humans must've put something in the lake. 

"Taehyung!" He shouted, instantly dashing back to save his friend. The other screeched out to him as he faded more and more out of light. Jimin growled and jumped onto one of the men, claws sinking into the human's arms as he slammed him down onto the ground, snarling at him loudly. He could hear all the other smaller animals in the bush retreating to safety, and their rustling did not avail him. The man groaned and tried to kick him off before screaming for help from his accomplice. The other man approached them and smacked Jimin off with a slab of broken wood, the wolf slamming into a tree painfully. 

"Jimin!' He heard Taehyung cry, and opened his eyes more widely to jump to his feet and leap at the humans again, biting them with all his strength. Taehyung managed to stumble over and sink his sharp teeth into the man's ankle. The humans retreated and the light scent of their blood disgusted the wolves. Jimin fell down beside Taehyung and leaned over so that the latter supported him. Taehyung nuzzled some of Jimin's dirty fur. "You're hurt, rest."

"I'm sorry. I should've been more careful, if I was more aware, then maybe you wouldn't-"

"Jimin, shut up. I saved you, you saved me. Now sleep."

Jimin tilted his head to meet Taehyung's eyes and he gave a small smile. "Can you promise to clean me up my morning then?"

"Sure."
