They All Sound The Same!
Things That Annoy Me~Inspired by vipelf13
Homophones.
A homophone is a word that has the same sound as another word but is spelled differently and has a different meaning.
The English language is weird. It has a way of manipulating words and tricking countless of people to fall into its trap. And whether you fall into that trap depends on how careful you are.
There are many words that sound similar, like “lose” and “loose”, “knight” and “night”, etc. And sometimes people can get confused by the different spellings, which means that we have to be weary of which word to use.
As much as these mistakes are annoying, they are sometimes pretty funny to read. Below are some out of the many examples I’ve come across.
Examples (based on real cases):
Please “bare” with me!
Corrected version: Please bear with me!
If you know what “bare” means, and you substitute the meaning or a synonym in, it would probably look something like this: Please expose a part of your body or something else with me!
And you know what that sounds like? Plain creepiness.
I don’t want to “waist” time.
Corrected version: I don't want to waste time.
The waist is a part of your body, not a verb.
She doesn't speak much, such a “quite” girl.
Corrected version: She doesn't speak much, such a quiet girl.
I don't even know how to explain this.
I’m always at “piece” here, the nature around me lets me relax my body and soul.
Corrected version: I’m always at peace here, the nature around me lets me relax my body and soul.
This too.
Out of all the grammar peeves, this annoys me the most, because one word can change the meaning of the whole sentence and it would take me a little longer to decipher what the author actually meant. However, as always, I wouldn't have the heart to inform them that they’ve actually made this mistake (I don’t know how to explain it to them too), so I’m posting it here instead.
If you have any other issues you wanna bring up, lemme know in the comments or you can pm me in the messages if you wanna have a chapter/topic all to yourself (I’ll credit you!). Ciao!
