I Need a Hero

When Taekwoon was younger, he, like any young boy, liked to think he was a super hero. But just like he is today, he was very different than all the other kids around him.

While everyone else's idea of a super hero was some guy in a flashy outfit who had this amazing ability to fly, shoot fire from his hands, or control some earthly element, Taekwoon had a different idea.

"He's like a tiny super hero," his mother would say with a smile. "You always know what to do to help someone."

Taekwoon thought that a super hero was someone who just always knew what to do when he saw someone that needed help. His mother had always told him that if he wanted to save someone, all he needed to do was be there for that person at the right time. And honestly, even Taekwoon knew at a young age that super heroes didn't really exist, but he was always so sure that people had to be saved somehow, even if that savior doesn't have some type of supernatural power or anything like that.

Taekwoon at one point wanted to be that hero someone needed, and from a very young age he always strived for that.

But reality hit him after the death of his mother and sisters. Not only was Taekwoon not able to save them, he was also the one that caused their deaths in the first place.

Of course, that's just what he believed.

But that was the moment when Taekwoon started seeing things differently.

After he lost the majority of his family, Taekwoon's father started to go downhill.

The worst part is, Taekwoon was once again powerless to stop his father from going down that path, further validating his new found belief.

Taekwoon hung up his cape, so to say, after he realized that he could be no one's hero. He couldn't even save the people that mattered most to him and he couldn't help but think that his mother had been wrong about everything that makes up a super hero.

Maybe a super hero really should have some type of special power, something Taekwoon didn't have.

Because if he had special powers, maybe he could be able to bend time, to stop his mother and sisters from dying. Or maybe he could have super strength, or the ability to fly. Those would have worked just fine too.

But at the time, all he was was a helpless ten year old who couldn't do anything useful.

Taekwoon guessed that not a lot had changed since then, except for his age...and height.

And now, even as Hakyeon led him to his house like a child, Taekwoon felt like his ten year old self again, unable to do anything for himself and needing others to help him.

A hero wouldn't have needed help at all.

"Taekwoon," Hakyeon said in worry. They were almost at Hakyeon's house, and the oldest one noticed how much Taekwoon's steps had begun to lag during their short walk. Repeatedly, he found himself having to slow down so as to not be separated from the silent boy. "Are you okay?" he asked, taking in Taekwoon's sullen features.

Taekwoon looked at Hakyeon in surprise before nodding.

Hakyeon smiled. "We're almost to my house," he said as he silently tried to urge Taekwoon to continue walking faster. "You should probably eat something too. I bet you're hungry too, right?"

Taekwoon nodded again.

"I'm no professional cook," Hakyeon said as he flung his arm around Taekwoon's shoulder. "But I can make some good food. Mostly ramen...but at least that's something, right?"

"I can cook for you if you want," Taekwoon suggested.

Hakyeon looked at Taekwoon, as if appalled before shaking his head. "You're sick," he pointed out. "I'm not going to let you cook."

"But I can," Taekwoon said. "And I like cooking."

"Maybe next time," Hakyeon said. "When you're all better and you still want to cook, I'll call the guys over and you can cook for all of us."

"Okay," Taekwoon replied sheepishly.

Hakyeon pulled out his key from his pocket as the two of them approached the front of Hakyeon's house.

"The sofa pulls out into a bed," Hakyeon said as he led Taekwoon into the living room. "I didn't know if you wanted to watch something...and, I don't want you straining yourself even more by walking upstairs."

Taekwoon nodded. "Thanks," he replied, embarrassed that once again Hakyeon was caring for him like this. "A movie would be good."

"Okay," Hakyeon said. He started removing the cushions from the couch.

"Your parents won't mind?" Taekwoon asked in worry as Hakyeon started to pull out the bed.

Hakyeon shook his head. "Besides, they're both gone," he answered. "They left yesterday for a trip. It's their anniversary."

"Anniversary?" Taekwoon asked.

"35 years," Hakyeon answered proudly. "I'm going to get some blankets for you, okay?" he said. "You still seem really cold."

Before Taekwoon could argue, Hakyeon was already running up the stairs. With a sigh, Taekwoon plopped onto the bed, staring closely at the family pictures on the wall.

Hakyeon and Taekwoon's tutoring sessions mostly took place in Hakyeon's room, so Taekwoon never had the opportunity to actually pay attention to the pictures in the living room. But finally getting to see them, he stared at them in astonishment.

There was one picture, clearly taken several years ago. It was Mr and Mrs Cha, a much younger person that was undeniably Hakyeon, and a boy and two girls who Taekwoon could assume were Hakyeon's older brother and sisters.

Taekwoon stood up, getting closer to the wall to look at the other pictures. Taekwoon couldn't help but think how beautiful of a family the Chas were, and he couldn't help but feel a tinge of jealousy.

"I was adorable, wasn't I?" Hakyeon asked, surprising Taekwoon as the younger one jumped and turned around.

"And fat," Taekwoon replied, hoping to wipe that proud smile off Hakyeon's face. He succeeded, but only because Hakyeon grew concerned as Taekwoon started coughing. It started out as a few quiet coughs before it started to escalate. Taekwoon wrapped his arm around his ribs, signifying just how much pain he was in.

"Let's get you back on the couch," Hakyeon said as he led Taekwoon to lay down on the bed. Hakyeon laid a blanket on top of Taekwoon and placed a pillow underneath his head. Hakyeon looked at Taekwoon's red face in concern. "Maybe I should get you some medicine too," he muttered as he placed his hand on Taekwoon's forehead. "Your ribs must still hurt from Dohoon, huh?"

That on top of other things, Taekwoon thought before nodding.

"We have some ibuprofen in the kitchen," Hakyeon said. He started walking into the kitchen, getting a glass of water for Taekwoon before getting two pills of the medicine into his hands. "Your ribs were bruised pretty bad," he said as he returned to the living room.

Taekwoon didn't say anything. He just accepted the medicine and water. "Thank you," he said.

Hakyeon smiled. "You're welcome," he replied.

Taekwoon sighed, seemingly sinking further into the bed. "You're right," he muttered. "I should have stayed in bed all weekend."

"I'm always right!" Hakyeon replied.

Taekwoon coughed into his sleeve, snuggling further under his blanket.

"Let me make you your food now," Hakyeon said, standing up. "Just rest until I'm done, okay?"

Taekwoon nodded, slowly closing his eyes.

Taekwoon gasped awake after feeling a hand roughly grab his shoulder and shake him.

"I'm sorry," Hakyeon said with wide eyes. He was holding a tray containing a bowl of ramen and some hot chocolate. "You weren't waking up."

Taekwoon didn't reply. He sat up, slightly embarrassed at his reaction. "Thank you," he finally said as he took the tray from Hakyeon and placed it on his lap. He sighed, rubbing at his eyes.

"I just wanted you to eat before you fell too deep asleep," Hakyeon tried to explain.

"It's okay," Taekwoon replied. "I don't even remember falling asleep. Sorry."

Hakyeon shook his head. "You shouldn't apologize for that," he said with a soft smile. "You need that rest, remember?"

Taekwoon picked up his chopsticks and started eating his noodles. "No," he said, shaking his head after he swallowed what was in his mouth. "I'm sorry for reacting like that. It must have scared you."

Hakyeon sighed, thinking it was ridiculous that Taekwoon felt the need to apologize for so
