You're Getting A Girlfriend

The Waiting Period

After the day of classes, Daehyun went back to the dorm and threw his bags down. He lived in a suite room with the rest of his friends, just like how he did before. However, Daehyun figured that nothing would’ve changed, like from where he lived and his schedule. He still had memories of what happened before, so everything would still be the same.

“Our first day of college is done!” Youngjae yelled as he opened his arms wide and collapsed on the couch. “I’m surprised that we get done so early compared to before. Right Daehyun? Daehyun?” he asked again once he saw that he wasn’t paying attention.

“Hmm?” Daehyun asked as he turned to look at Youngjae.

“You’re not paying attention,” Youngjae said as he adjusted himself so that he could see him better. “Is it because it’s the first day of classes?”

“I don’t know,” Daehyun said shrugging his shoulders. “I’m just tired, that’s it. I mean, with Yongguk-hyung waking me up, you know.”

“Yeah, I know,” Youngjae said agreeing with him, and he couldn’t help but think that something was wrong with Daehyun. Sure, they always had their off days, but leading up to their first day of college, Youngjae was sure that Daehyun was very excited about it. However, Daehyun didn’t act as though he was excited for it anymore. Granted, Youngjae knew that maybe it didn’t live up to the expectations that Daehyun had, but he wasn’t entirely sure.

“I’m going to go into my room. Maybe I need a nap,” Daehyun said as he got off of the couch and started to go towards the room that he shared with Youngjae.

“Alright,” Youngjae said with a nod of his head as he watched Daehyun walk away into their room.

Once he entered their room, Daehyun threw himself onto his bed. He couldn’t believe what was going on. Time travel? There was no way, but somehow there was. “Time travel,” Daehyun muttered to himself. It didn’t make sense, why would he be time traveling? Sure, he figured, those Zelo and Jongup kids told him the reasons, but he wasn’t entirely convinced. Why would it matter whether he and Daeun stayed together? It wasn’t like it was going to be the end of the world if they separated.

Closing his eyes, Daehyun hoped that he would at least be able to get some sleep and wake up from a horrendous nightmare. It was all just a dream, he wasn’t actually in the past, it was all just a bad dream. “Actually, you are in the past,” a voice said causing Daehyun to suddenly sit up in shock and stare at the two people that he didn’t particularly want to see standing in his room.

“What are you doing here?” he asked them. “Stop coming.”

“This is only our second time, though,” Zelo said as he looked at Jongup. “You can’t be that tired of us already. Normally it takes people at least to the fourth visit to tell us to go away.”

“There are other people like this?” Daehyun asked.

“This as in time travel?” Jongup asked.

“No, other people that are dying on their bed right now,” Daehyun said as he rolled his eyes.

“Well if you think about the people on their death beds…” Zelo began before Daehyun cut him off.

“That’s not what I’m talking about!” he yelled. “I’m talking about time travel. Why did they put two teenagers in charge of doing something like this?”

“Yes, there are other time travelers,” Jongup said with a smile. “You’re not the only one, but we can’t tell you anything about the other ones.”

“It wasn’t like I was even going to ask,” Daehyun sighed as he fell back onto the bed. “You know what, I don’t even care anymore. I’m just going to live my life like I’ve always lived it and see how far it takes me.”

“It won’t take you far,” Zelo said before Daehyun could drift off to sleep. “You’ll just end up in the same place that you started.”

“So? Then what was the whole reason for sending me to the past?”

“For you to realize your mistakes and fix them,” Jongup said. “You should fix your past mistakes.”

“And what if I don’t?” Daehyun asked. Slowly, he was growing more curious with every answer that Zelo and Jongup gave. Why would he come to the past to redeem his past mistakes when no one else could? What made Daehyun special?

“Then things just go back to normal…I guess,” Zelo said shrugging his shoulders as he looked at Jongup for an answer, but Jongup didn’t have one either.

“You’re saying…” Daehyun said as he slowly sat up and pointed at the two teenaged boys, “that you don’t actually know what happens if the person doesn’t redeem their past mistakes?”

“Exactly,” the two of them said at the same time.

“Normally people do because they’re stupid mistakes or something major that screwed over their life,” Zelo said thinking back to the other people that had been sent back in time. “You’re no exception.”

“What major mistake did I make?” Daehyun asked. As far as he knew, he didn’t do make any major mistakes, he only made minor ones. And for him, a lot of minor ones led up to him getting a divorce.

“You’re going to have to find that on your own,” Jongup said as he looked at his watch. “Ah, Zelo, we have to get going, we have another appointment!”

“So it would seem,” Zelo said nodding his head. “Well, Daehyun, it was nice seeing you again. Hopefully we’ll see each other sometime soon. Goodbye!” they said before they disappeared into thin air.

Dumbfounded, Daehyun sat on his bed. There was no way that he was going to get any sleep now. He had to know what major mistake he made. He had no recollection about any type of major mistake that would’ve made anyone mad or would’ve screwed up his life. He was sure about it, but feeling as though he was missing something, Daehyun got off of his bed and went to his desk to begin writing down the events that he remembered in hopes one would trig his memory.

It was dinnertime when Daehyun awoke to his phone vibrating in his pocket. Slowly, he lifted his head off of the desk and the papers that were scattered around and fished around in his pocket for his phone.

“Hello?” he asked in a slightly groggy voice.

“Yah, Daehyun, let’s grab dinner together,” Yongguk said over the phone.

“Okay, hyung,” Daehyun said as he adjusted himself on the seat and rubbed his eyes. “Where are we meeting?”

“The dining hall on the south part of campus. I’ll be waiting outside,” Yongguk said before he hung up the phone.

Yawning once more, Daehyun stretched in his seat before he got up and went to a mirror to straighten his hair and at least look a little appropriate to go outside into the public.

“Well, look who it is,” Youngjae said at the sight of Daehyun walking out of the room. “It’s sleeping beauty.”

“Shut it,” Daehyun said turning to Youngjae. “I’m going to lunch with Yongguk-hyung.”

“I know, I’m coming too,” Youngjae said as he put down the book that he was reading.

“Were you studying already?” Daehyun curiously asked as the two of them left the dorm together.

“Maybe,” Youngjae said shrugging his shoulders. “What were you doing at your desk? I saw that it was a list of things. Is it a list of things that you want to accomplish with your life?”

“Maybe,” Daehyun said acting the same way that Youngjae just had.

“Whatever it was, it had some strange things on it.”

“Maybe I was writing your life plan,” Daehyun jokingly said.

“Well, if that’s my life plan…then I’m never going to follow it,” Youngjae said with a chuckle. Daehyun laughed along with Youngjae until he spotted Yunhi and Daeun out of the corner of his eyes. “What?” Youngjae asked turning to look where Daehyun was looking. “Ah, it’s those girls from English class, Yunhi and her friend, right? Aren’t they in your group?”

“Yes,” Daehyun muttered as he continued walking.

“Yunhi!” Youngjae called as he waved wildly until she looked over at him.

“Ah, Youngjae, hi,” Yunhi said with a smile as she walked over to them. “I saw that we were in the same English class, but I couldn’t say hi to you.”

“It’s alright,” Youngjae said with a smile.

“Ah, Daeun,” Yunhi said turning to her friend that was standing next to her, “this is Yoo Youngjae, we also went to high school together.”

“It seems like you went to high school with a lot of people,” Daeun commented as she looked from Youngjae to Daehyun who gave an awkward nod of his head.

“Hmm, you could say,” Yunhi said as she looked at Daeun with a smile. “I mean, all of you guys came, right?”

“Well Yongguk-hyung and Himchan-hyung already went here anyway,” Youngjae began, “we just got a suite with them, Daehyun and I.”

“That’s good, we should visit sometime, right Daeun?” Yunhi asked.

          “Sure, doesn’t matter,” Daeun said.

“Where are you going now?” Yunhi asked as she turned to look at both Daehyun and Youngjae.

“We’re going to go meet up with Yongguk-hyung at the dining hall on the south part of campus. Do you want to join us?” Youngjae asked and before Daehyun could prevent them coming along, Yunhi had agreed and was dragging Daeun with her.

As the four of them walked together, Yunhi and Youngjae talked with one another. Youngjae was waiting for Daehyun to come take the spot, since Daehyun was the one that liked her in high school, but he was too busy in the back in silence with Daeun by his side. The air between the two was awkward, neither of them knew what they could say. What would they say? “Um…I was going to e-mail about the project once I got back,” Daeun said starting off a bit awkwardly.

“Oh, alright,” Daehyun said as he shoved his hands into his pockets. “What were you going to e-mail about?”

“Just…the normal things, I don’t know. Maybe I’ll make a general timeline so we keep things on track.”

“Okay, sounds good,” Daehyun said before the silence fell between them once again.

“So…um…” Daeun said as she slowly began to speak again. “You know Yunhi from high school, right?”

“We just went to the same school, it’s not like I actually know her know her,” Daehyun said. “I mean…I just saw her around and stuff.”

“It seems like you two would be cute together,” Daeun said shrugging her shoulders.

“What?” Daehyun asked almost stopping in his spot. He couldn’t believe what he just heard. Daeun telling him that he looked good together with Yunhi? There was no way that he would ever date Yunhi. Yunhi wasn’t the one for him, it was Daeun. Daeun was the one that Daehyun married, the one that he had a child with. Surely she didn’t know any of that since they were in the past, but it was Daeun that Daehyun had to make fall for him. Yunhi wasn’t anywhere in the picture. Daehyun couldn’t even remember hanging out with Yunhi much during the college days. All he remembered about his college years was Daeun and only Daeun.

“Jung Daehyun! Are you spacing out again?” Youngjae yelled.

“Huh?” Daehyun asked as he looked ahead and saw Daeun, Youngjae, and Yunhi standing at the entrance of the south dining hall staring back at him.

“C’mon, Yongguk-hyung is waiting for us.”

“Okay, coming,” Daehyun said as he quickly ran to catch up with them before they walked in.

“Well, you guys surely took your merry time getting here,” Yongguk commented as the boys sat down with their trays. Youngjae sat beside Yongguk while Daehyun sat across from him, with Yunhi sitting on his left and across from Youngjae. Daeun was right next to her.

“Hyung, you remember Yunhi, don’t you?” Youngjae asked.

“Briefly. Hi,” Yongguk politely said. “I’m Bang Yongguk.”

“I remember you,” Yunhi said with a smile. “You were quite popular when you went to school.”

“Heh, I guess you could say,” Yongguk awkwardly began before he saw Himchan come through the door. “Himchan,” Yongguk commented as Himchan took the seat besides Youngjae and across from Daeun, “you’re the one that I called first yet you’re the latest.”

“Sorry, I had to stay after. Apparently I was woo-ing the teacher when I wasn’t even trying,” Himchan commented. “I’m going to go get food, I’ll be right back.”

“So Daehyun,” Yongguk said as he turned his attention to the guy that was sitting right across from him. “Are you finally better?”

“Better?” Daehyun asked as he took a break in putting food into his mouth. “What do you mean better?”

“You were a little out of it this morning. Is everything alright now?”

“Yeah, yeah, yeah,” Daehyun said as he put down his chopsticks and put on a smile. “Everything’s fine. I was just anxious and nervous, you know.”

“Alright,” Yongguk said as he suspiciously eyed Daehyun. “If that’s what you want to say.”

During the dinner, Daehyun couldn’t help but look out of the corner of his eye to see what Daeun was doing. Even if he was in the past, his feelings for her didn’t disappear. He wasn’t the Daehyun that he was during college, he was a time-traveler. He was a person that had seen a whole lot in his life and he wanted to change it. He figured that maybe Zelo and Jongup were right about the whole thing, that maybe there were things that he wanted to fix in his life and show his son that he was a good man growing up, that he did things in a respectable manner. Still, though, he couldn’t help but wonder if things were going to work by sending him back in time. Not everything could be fixed with time travel, it wasn’t like it was that simple.

“Hey, Jung Daehyun,” Himchan said calling to him from down the table.

“Yeah?” Daehyun asked as he directed his attention towards Himchan.

“I have a plan for you this year, your freshman year of college,” Himchan said with a chuckle that was starting to scare Daehyun.

“What plan?” he curiously asked, but it was against his better judgment.

“You’re going to get a girlfriend this year,” Himchan announced causing Daehyun to choke on the soda that he was drinking.

          “What?” he asked in surprise.

“I know that you’ve never really had a girlfriend before.”

“I have,” Daehyun said interrupting him.

“Not ‘real’ girlfriends,” Himchan said with a chuckle. “Don’t worry, I’m going to teach you all about getting girls. We’re in college now, I know a bunch.”

          “Um…thanks anyway, but I think I’ll pass.”

“Nope. Tonight we’re going to go to a party,” Himchan said with a smile and a wink towards Daehyun. “Tonight, we’re going to find you a girlfriend.”

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What will happen at the party? What will happen between Yunhi and Daehyun? What will happen between Daehyun and Daeun? Can Daehyun make Daeun fall for him?
