Chapter 1

Warrior/전사

In a land, far far away, many, many years ago, there was a large kingdom, where Confucianism has been continued to be practised, and has continued to have effect on the daily lives of the citizens in general. This kingdom was called Joseon.

This kingdom was ruled over by King Jonghwan and Queen Ilsoon. Their ancestors were King Sejong and several of his fellow scholars, who invented the Hunminjeongeum, which is known today as Hangul containing its own consonants and vowels inspired by shapes and patterns of a window, which created a drastic shift in literacy rate, and therefore has been much easier to use and write than the Hanja, or Chinese characters, which Koreans struggled to understand as not many people were given the opportunity to learn them.

It previously had social hierachy which all Koreans looked up to, which involved the yangban, the highest social class, consisting of scholars, palace people and noblemen, the sangmin, involving the ordinary commoners of the Joseon, and the cheonmin, the lowest social class, involving shoemakers, entertainers such as the kisaeng and dancers, storytellers, fortune tellers, artists, musicians, craftsmen, and prison guards. Women were also regarded as inferior to men, and were not allowed to go to school nor serve in the army, but stayed at home and learn activities from mothers such as cleaning, cooking, music, laundry and the art of speech. The King and Queen were tired of this and decided to break these norms and treat everybody like an equal person and giving them what everyone needed and deserved.

Everybody was free to enjoy life, girls were allowed to go to school, women were allowed to serve in the army and/or become scholars, and the kingdom was happy.

The King and Queen had fourteen children.

The eldest of all was Prince Eunkwang, renowned for his leadership, and was generally very sweet, caring and understanding towards his thirteen younger siblings.

The second was Princess Chorong, also known as Princess Chorong of Purity. Ironic to her sweet facade and charm, she was very athletic and particularly had talent for martial arts, such as Hapkido and Taekwondo, which she continued to pursue her interest in.

The third was Prince Minhyuk of Justice, the rebellious one. He was generally bored of palace life and was often dreaming about a life full of adventure.

The fourth was Princess Bomi, who was reliable, and alike her sister Chorong athletic and talented with martial arts.

The fifth was Prince Changsub of Truth; he was very smart and had a talent for calligraphy and poetry.

The sixth was Princess Eunji; alike the stereotypical Korean lady at the time she was talented in painting, singing and dancing. She was also talented in pansori and also had a voice like a siren.

The seventh was Prince Hyunsik of Sincerity, the joongshim of the family, who had talent in archery and wrestling.

The eighth was Princess Naeun of Beauty. She cared a lot about her looks and beautifying herself. Men and boys would cheer for her when she was out on the streets when the princes and princesses visited places around the kingdom.

The ninth was Prince Donggeun of Intelligence. He was very skilled in hunminjeongeum and hanja. Aside from Korean, he also had the power to translate secret codes from any language.

The tenth was Princess Yookyung, the most tomboyish of all the princesses, and alike Minhyuk wanted a life of adventure. She was also skilled in archery as well as fighting and martial arts.

The eleventh was Prince Ilhoon of Honor; he was very mischievous and unlike other princes he liked to do things most boys like to do, hence he was a wild child, but nonetheless respect of his family.

The twelfth was Princess Namjoo of Duty; she learned how to play music from her mother, such as the famous stringed instrument, the kayageum, therefore was skilled in it.

The thirteenth was Prince Sungjae of Honesty, who was talented in horse riding as well as the art of sword fighting.

The maknae was Princess Hayoung of Gentleness, however she was very mature for a maknae. Other than being selfless, she was also talented in archery.

Yookyung was just finishing practising her archery, with the help of her older brother Hyunsik, helping her position her arms so that she could reach the target.

"Like this," demonstrated Hyunsik, as he shot the arrow right into the target.

Yookyung mimicked his moves, but only shot near the bullseye.

"Awww man!" she groaned.

"It takes practice," said Hyunsik with a smile.

Yookyung collected her arrows once again and tried, focusing carefully in the middle.

She tried again and again until she eventually succeeded.

"YES!" she cheered with a grin.

"See, I told you it takes practise," said Hyunsik.

Sungjae was practising his sword fighting skills with his father. As a king himself, and had served in the army once when a war broke out, he still had knowledge of the techniques of the many different kinds of weapons.

Once their lesson was over, Sungjae sat next to his father as they put down their swords.

"I wanna be just like you, father," said Sungjae, "When I am king and we take the heir of the thrones, we will do anything to protect our country!"

"That's my boy," said his father proudly, tapping his shoulder.

Changsub and Donggeun were in the palace library, checking out the many different ancient texts. Changsub initially wished to be a poet, and so continued writing as many poems as possible, whilst Donggeun was studying Hanja, translating them into the Hunminjeongeum recognised within the country.

In the courtyard, Minhyuk, Bomi, Chorong and Ilhoon were practising martial arts. Ironic to the princes, the princesses were already winning the battles.

"Giving up bro?" teased the older sisters as they lay on top of their brothers after defeating them.
