Chapter 6

Winning Hearts

Kyuhyun,

I’m going to be gone all day.

I figured that if I waited to tell you in person you wouldn’t want me leaving your side before you wake up. That’s why I’m already gone.

 I’ll see you later.

Enjoy your auntie and uncle’s anniversary.

Ryeowook

A long time ago, Kyuhyun recalled him being the cold one, not the other way around. Since when did he wake up in bed alone without the comforting sounds of Ryeowook humming around the penthouse? Better yet, since when had Kyuhyun become accustomed to living with someone else?

Crumpling up the note, he threw it into the garbage and began getting ready for the party. He was a little late, but it didn’t matter. Yoona couldn’t yell at him, and neither could his extended family. They were in his debt whether they liked it or not.

Kyuhyun closed his eyes under the spraying water, smiling a bit. It was moments like that when he suddenly thought, “There’s always a chance.”

Truly, he believed that one day they would end up coming together. They were so close to reaching that point and Kyuhyun refused to give up. There was no particular reason for his sudden surge of belief. Adrenaline just found its way into his body and told him that, indeed, there’s always a chance.

***

“I can’t believe how long it’s been,” Ryeowook breathed, lying down in the soft grass. There was a weather worn grave marker beside him, along with a bouquet of flowers. He inhaled deeply, body thrumming with lazy energy as nostalgia swallowed him up. A powerful gust of wind rushed over him, welcoming him home in a way. “It’s nice to be back…even for a short while,” he whispered.

Rolling onto his side, he touched the gravestone, smiling faintly at it. “I haven’t been around since our last anniversary…I’m sorry.” Ryeowook’s gaze lowered, still able to catch sight of the changing color of the leaves. “I love autumn,” he murmured, “because then it’s always sunset. It’s always our time of day, isn’t that right, Hyungsik?” There was another strong wind and the silver bracelet rattled.

Do You See What I See?

He caught sight of his own reflection and just smiled wider. Pressing a gentle kiss to the bracelet, Ryeowook flopped back onto his back and closed his eyes in exasperation. “I live for Cho Kyuhyun these days,” Ryeowook stated, somewhat gloomily, “I didn’t even realize that until just now when I thought about calling him and checking if he was doing okay. It really seems like I’m not even able to have a life anymore.”

Gentle fingers rolled through Ryeowook’s hair and his entire body relaxed into the touch. Do you even want to get away, though?

“Yes, I do want to get away, Hyungsik,” the older boy frowned, looking up to see a shadow of a figure under the sunlight. “Or…well,” Ryeowook bit his lip, not wanting to lie to his deceased husband, “I don’t know. He and I…are we already in love? I feel as if we are. We do everything together, everyone thinks that we’re married…shouldn’t I just give in?”

The phantom smiled. If you’re scared, don’t push yourself…if he really loves you, he would wait until the ends of the earth. You continue waiting for me in the same way, don’t you?

Ryeowook shut his eyes, fingers clenching tight. “I promised you my love. How can I just toss all of that aside for one man? You were my world until the day you died.” He tried to cling to the air, to the ghost his mind so often conjured, but it wasn’t working. “I can’t let you go,” his voice cracked, teeth gritting together. “…I’m afraid to tell you goodbye.”

I’m not asking you to say goodbye. Do what you feel like doing. That man cares about you, you know that. Love him or hate him, it doesn’t matter to me.

“You wouldn’t care if I fell in love with someone else?” Ryeowook argued, ignoring the self inflicted pain forming in his chest.

Maybe the heavens thought our love was too perfect,

So they’re sending me back sooner than expected.

Ryeowook covered his face, feeling the phantom slowly receding into space. “’How could two people be more perfect for each other? I ask myself this every morning that I wake up next to you… Just what makes us…us? Why have we lasted this long? I won’t label us anymore though. I don’t want to ruin the magic. I love you, gorgeous,” he recited with the utmost precision.

That’s right. I love you, gorgeous.

And then, as he surfaced from his visions, Ryeowook turned to look at the cold, lonely gravestone. “You’re never going to call me that again,” he whispered, “I’ll never hear your voice vow those things ever again.” He buried his face in his knees, already too old and too tired to shed painful tears.

I won’t pretend that we’re going to be together forever.

I know that in my heart we’re going to be forever bonded…

“Did I really mean those things?” Ryeowook muttered, eyes glazing over. “Were our wedding vows just desperate little prayers? Had we been children when we said all of that?” He ran his fingers over the grass absently, his eyes focusing vaguely on the worn down apartment building in the short distance.

“It’s way too desperate if I go down there, huh?” he laughed bitterly. “I’ve been thinking about buying the complex back. I’m making a lot of money these days, but it’s at a price, I guess.” Ryeowook closed his eyes briefly, jaw clenching.

The sound of children running and laughing caught his attention. Sitting up, he looked down the hill to the entourage of kids racing by. They looked so familiar, yet not at the same time. Ryeowook watched them for a while, just long enough to realize how pathetic he was. It was too hard to do those visits. It was just a convenient lie to say that he had no free time to come all the way over to the grave. Instead, he couldn’t bear to look at his own reflection after slumping into such a mess every time he stopped by.

What sort of person acted like he loved someone else, all the while rejecting that person? He wasn’t stupid. He knew that Kyuhyun was waiting patiently for him. Three years of waiting was long enough, or at least, Ryeowook often heard from Kyuhyun that that was long enough.

But was it really?

He sighed, playing with the grass rustling around him. “Tell me how I’m supposed to love someone else,” Ryeowook whispered, “tell me how I can let go of you after three years. Tell me how I’m supposed to fall in love with someone else.” His fingers trembled with frustration, eyes shutting angrily. “Please…,” he ground out, voice choking, “…three years is nothing. Kyuhyun isn’t you. He’ll never be the boy I have loved for fifteen years. He’ll never by my first kiss, touch, or husband. He…,” Ryeowook bit his tongue, not wanting to say anymore, even if it was only to a cold grave.

its been 11 years since the story was completed, im super late but i just wanna say THANK YOU. thank you for giving us this beautiful Kyuwook love story. although at some point in the story, i was secretly hoping they wouldn't end up together, as much as i love kyuwook with all my heart, i just felt like they've hurt each other enough that even love couldn't begin to fix what they had, but as I was nearing the end of the story, thank you for proving me wrong. 2 broken individuals, dealing with their own issues, the haunting past and uncertainties of the future, but somehow they managed to make things work and made LOVE be enough, not to pick up where they left off, but to START anew, as healed individuals, and persons who understood how genuine and sincere love could give life so much more meaning.
I love both stories to bits, however, i've got a few questions that im afraid will be left unaswered lol.

Firstly, did Kyuhyun ever find out that it was Ryeowook who saved him years ago? I feel like it played a very important role in the story, esp Kyu's life, but there was no other mention of it, only that Victoria found the journal. no further mention/referenced about it, so i guess Kyu didn't find out and neither Wookie. But in the journal, Kyu did say he wanted to fall in love with that person, i can only imagine the fluff had they found out it was them all along.
Secondly, i haven't fully grasped what kind of game Kyu & Siwon were playing, 'cept those little snippets of bets where they toyed around, but the intensity of the game wasn't revealed, nor how it came to be. Esp at a later part where Kyu seemed helpless and afraid of Siwon and the latter seemed to be claiming ownership over Kyu. Just how big was the game?
Thirdly, what ever happened to Kyuhyun's letter? Did it ever reach Ryeowook? but i doubt it, Ryeo would've gone crazy (in a good way) about it after Kyu's confession, esp since he was starting to realize just how much the man had meant to him. So im guessing Siwon found out about it and interfered making sure it didn't reach Ryeowook? hence, he forged a reply and gave that to Kyu instead.
Fourthly, still regarding Kyu's letter, when he went to Ryeowook's hometown and love confessions were exchanged, he did mention about the letter and the supposed reply, surely that raised questions in Ryeowook's head, but why didn't he ask about them? he only processed about how the CD got to Kyuhyun but failed to question about the letters.
Fifthly, why was Dae-jung in their care? It was mentioned of them as godparents, but what happened to his real parents, why was the kid under Kyuwook's care? Also, was little Hyungsik a surrogate baby, or was he adopted? Appa Kyu was just too cute :))
Sixthly, i got a little confused cause in the prequel, Hyungsik was in his senior high school year and Ryeo a freshman college, so i figured he was gone soon after school started, cause it was summertime when they decided to move in together, and were only together for a few months. BUT, in the sequel, why did it say it's only been 4 years since Hyungsik left? I mean if you counted Ryewook's college years, which i assumed was 4 years, then he started working right away after graduation, and it had been 3 years since he started working for Kyu, shouldn't that be at least 7 years since Hyungsik was gone?
Seventhly, If the bracelet that Ryeowook gave to Kyuhyun was the same one as the one Hyungsik gave, what significance did the writings "Do You See What I See" had on Kyuhyun? How did the engraving connect to their love story in some ways?
Lastly, as silly as it may seem, how did Ryeowook party with the girls that had his eyes filled with horror and disgust? :DDDDD HAHAH poor Wookie :D

But really, I enjoyed the 2 stories, and once again THANK YOU for sharing their beautiful love story with us :)

Hopefully this comment won't be too long like the other one.... btw, this will be my 10th comment so FINALLY I can upvote your stories!! You deserve it so fcking much! *spoilers ahead*
Um! Yeah. I. Loved. It. From beginning till the end. Like. I finished it in not even 6 hours. And had only 5 hours of sleep. And miraculously passed the driving exam. Hahahaha.... (you'll be hearing from me often from now on since I'm starting to get too addicted on KW :x oh, and be prepared for a lot of blabbering, my specialty). If you read the comment of mine in Across Time, there was this one point I wanted to talk about a lot. Not gonna spoil that story here so let's keep it in relation with this one. You know how often in TV dramas and books and fictions in general, whenever something baaaaaad happens to one of the two MCs, the other always somehow finds a way to reach them and save them? Well, that so does not happen in life all the time. Like, seriously. So, imagine my mild surprise when throughout the story, KyuWook went from ups and downs and were able to stand up again not only with each others' help, but mainly with the help of other people around them? I loved it so much when Changtoria helped Wook with dealing with Hyungsik's case as well as being there for him when he was at his lowest (while Kyu was still unaware so far away). And thank the flowers in all the world that Wook was quite stable when they met again... true, I would love it if Kyu was there to help Wook too, don't get me wrong... but being pulled up by other people, finding that support somewhere else is SO FRIGGING IMPORTANT I so can't stress that enough.
BUT! There was this one part that bugged me a little... and that was when Kyu was manipulated by Siwon and Wook didn't help him much (despite seeing his personality change)... actually, noone, not even Changmin helped Kyu back then. I was really worried about him, you know? TT.TT Changmin didn't even trust Kyu enough and try to reach him. And still, it actually was Ryeowook who saved Kyuhyun then, because Kyuhyun couldn't stop loving him, couldn't stop wishing to be with him. I'm not sure if Kyuhyun ever realized Wook is the same person who saved him, I thought he did hence he fell in love with him, but after reading the chapter about Kyu realizing his feelings, that thought kinda vanished (or did he realize it then that it was the same person?). Though maybe, they shared more things we didn't see (I mean, who wouldn't get curious about what their loved one was doing in the 4 months you didn't see them and was crazy about them?).
The last thing I'm gonna say.... I was expecting to read about Kyuhyun trying for Ryeowook since day one and then was pleasantly welcomed by them already living together xD the first ~~15 chapters were so damn fluffy I might need to screenshot them or something to read when I have too much time xD Thank you for writing this piece!

Chapter 52: I can't believe I just read whole thing, 50 chapters, in a row, straight, with no break at all, in less than one day. And my national exam is next week. Ah fk, my eyes are burning now from staring at my phone for too long. I'm a mess and I'm suffering from all these feels you've given me through this story.

Thank you for writing this amazing story. I especially loved the beggining parts of the story. Secretary Ryeowook dealing with fussy Boss Kyuhyun was a great delight to read. Best concept ever.

The one part that i have a problem with was that Kyuhyun never found out that his past saviour with the initials "R" or "L" was Ryeowook. I was really looking forward to that part and wished we got some closure on that.
