Dance To the Melody

Myungsoo's POV

I walked into the class room and straight away took the front seat, there’s no way I’m going to miss Sungyeol in action and I’m kind of looking forward to Eunhee’s acting too.

Sungyeol who usually took a place beside me, oddly walked pass. I saw him sit beside Eunhee who seemed to be staring blankly outside the window.

Seeing her cheerless like this somehow gives me the urge to go over there and cheer her up. I was about to approach her but then return to my seat again when I saw Sungyeol took hold of her shoulder.

“Eunhee-ah, you feeling ok?” I heard him asked Eunhee with a soft voice.

What’s up with him? Why is he being nice to her all of a sudden?

I saw Eunhee shrugged his hand off, “Whether I’m ok or not is none of your business...”

Sungyeol looked a little hurt. I scoffed; I guess his presence still annoys her.

“Yah, it is my business. It’s our turn today remember? I don’t want your acting to get affected by all that sulking. It’ll ruin the performance…” Sungyeol huffed.

“Look whose sulking; it’s just a small and quick scene Sungyeol-ah. Don’t be such a worry wart.”

Here they go arguing again, can’t they just give it a brake and get along for once?

“Yah! Don’t turn this around on me!” Sungyeol stood up.

“You were the one who started it!” Eunhee did the same.

I was about to break their fight when Mr. Kang stepped into the class.

“Good afternoon students!” he greeted as he sat down at his desk.

“Well, let’s get started shall we? And since Sungyeol and Eunhee is already standing up over there, why don’t we just welcome them to the front,” Mr. Kang clapped and soon everyone followed.

As if on cue, both of their glaring faces instantly changed into a smiling one and they made their way to the front.

“Alright, the scene will be set at the airport where Sungyeol is getting ready to board a plane heading for America. He decided to finally let go of the person he love, which is Eunhee, who at the same time will be engaged to someone else. But little did he know that Eunhee had run away from her own engagement party and chased him all the way here to the airport,” explained Mr. Kang.

Both Sungyeol and Eunhee had surprised expressions etched on their face. I have a bad feeling about this…

“Sungyeol and Eunhee, please take your places. The lines will spontaneously be made by you and don’t forget to show all of your emotions.”

Sungyeol took his place near the door, ready with his fake ticket and luggage, while Eunhee was at the opposite end of the room.

“Airport scene, take one. Ready… and action!” Mr. Kang enthusiastically directed.

“This is it, there’s no turning back… Eunhee-ah, I’m sorry… it’s time for me to let you go…” Sungyeol had a sad expression and was clutching his ticket to his chest.

When he was about to walk out the door I saw Eunhee run towards him and shouted, “Yah! Lee Sungyeol! Stop!”

We were a little taken aback by how loud she was.

At the corner of my eye I saw Sungyeol tried not to shout back at her and regained his position with a ‘worried mixed with surprised’ look. I choked back a laugh.

“Eunhee-ah how‘d you get here? Aren’t you supposed to be at your engagement party?”

Eunhee was still panting as if she had run a marathon. Then she glared at Sungyeol, but I can see she was also holding back tears. Suddenly she stormed up towards Sunyeol and started to hit his chest uncontrollably.

“How could you… how could you leave me…without even saying goodbye…” she was already on the verge of crying.

Sungyeol was speechless for a moment, but then he tried to stop Eunhee from hitting him.

“Eunhee-ah, I have to leave… You’re going to be engaged with someone else, I have to let you go…”

But Eunhee kept on hitting him and her tears started to flow down her cheeks.

“I don’t care about that stupid engagement; you know very well that I hate that jerk… Yeollie-ah, I love you… we’ve been together for years… don’t tell me that you don’t love me anymore…” her hitting gradually slowed down.

But what surprised me was Sungyeol’s next action. He hugged her, rubbing her back and trying to soothe her. Eunhee then buried her face on his chest and hugged him back, tightly. Her tears kept on streaming down.

“That’s not what I meant Eunhee-ah, I still love you… very much… That’s why I decided to leave; I can’t stand seeing you with him…”

“Then pleases don’t go... because I’m not going back to him… I want to be with you, Yeollie-ah…” she let go and was looking up at him with a loving expression.

The scene in front of me made my heart burn; I clenched my hand into a fist trying to calm my selves down.

It’s just acting Myungsoo-ah… just acting… But they’re so good at it that it looked so real… The whole class was pretty into it too, some of the girls were even tearing up.

Sungyeol then cupped Eunhee’s face with his hands and wiped her tears away with his thumbs. I gritted my teeth when his expression showed that as if he really loved her.

“Fine, if you really want to be with me that much then I won’t ever leave you… So please don’t cry, Eunhee-ah… It breaks my heart to see you cry like this…”

Eunhee finally nodded and smiled. Then something unexpected happened, Sungyeol started to lean in and his eyes were slowly closing, Eunhee’s too.

Oh no, no, no… this is not happening… not to this extent…

They were getting closer and closer that their lips were just about to touch…

“NOOOO!” I shouted, practically standing up with my hand stretched out trying to stop them.

Everyone turned their attention to me with shocked expressions on their face, including Sungyeol and Eunhee. The atmosphere changed and there was an awkward silence.

“He, he, he… I was just putting myself into her fiancé’s shoes…” I awkwardly rubbed the back of my neck and sat back down in embarrassment.

Suddenly everyone started to laugh, Eunhee was smiling while wiping her excess tears away and Sungyeol slightly pouted.

What will she think of me now… I buried my face in my hands.

Then Mr. Kang clapped his hands, “Alright everyone, calm down! That was an impressive performance; let’s give them a round of applause. Eunhee, your acting skills have surely improved, keep up the good work.”

“Thank you Mr. Kang,” she bowed before returning back to her seat.

During the rest of the lesson, I really couldn’t concentrate. My mind kept on coming back to that particular scene and playing it over and over again. What if I was just seconds too late…? I shivered at the thought and tried to shake it away.

I sighed in relief when I heard the bell that indicates classes were over.

“Well that will be all for today, have a nice weekend everyone! Oh, for Myungsoo, Sugyeol, and Eunhee you still have detention after this. Even if you two did a great job today, there’s still no tolerance,” Mr. Kang reminded us.

I groaned at the thought of spending another hour with those two alone after what had happened earlier.

I’ll just have to try and keep my cool then…

Eunhee’s POV

I wrote the last couple of lines carefully with the neatest handwriting I can possibly do. This is what I don’t like in Mr. Kang’s detention, doing lines. Writing the same sentence over and over again for three pages long and it has to be ‘neat’.

After finishing my lines, I leaned back on my seat and stretched. I looked up at the clock and saw that we still have 15 more minutes. I then rummaged through my backpack and took out a blue notebook. Might as well try to think of some lyrics for my new song…

While I was writing some random words, Sungyeol who was sitting to my right suddenly snatched my notebook and started reading through it.

“Watcha doin’?”

“Yah! That’s private, give that back! Aren’t you supposed to be doing lines?” I tried to grab my notebook back but failed.

“Hey, didn't you say that you loved me earlier? and are these lyrics or something? It doesn’t really make sense to me…” Sungyeol smirked.

“That was just acting, stupid, and who cares if you understand it or not… Just give it back…” still reaching out for the notebook, but he just simply pushed me away with ease.

“Along the air like the flying birds I openly sing… Like the whale that lives in the ocean, across the waves I openly dance… What kind of lyrics are these? You know very well that you can’t dance,” he returned my notebook and went back to his seat.

“Why can’t you just leave me alone once in a while…,” I muttered as I brushed traces of him from my notebook.

“Speaking of which…” I finally heard Myungsoo speak after being silent throughout detention.

“Eunhee-ah, would you like to be my dance partner for the project?” he asked.

“What!?” both me and Sunyeol turned to look at him, shocked.

“Yah! How come you got to ask Eunhee first?”

“What? You want to ask her to be your dance partner too?” he asked Sungyeol a matter of factly.

“Th…that’s… not what I meant…,” stuttered Sungyeol.

“Yah, aren’t you supposed to be ‘my’ partner? We always do things together, why are you ditching me now!?” Sungyeol pointed his finger at Myungsoo.

“I’m not ditching you, I’m giving you a chance to partner up with someone else like Sungjong maybe, and you guys can do that girl group dance you always talked about.”

Sungyeol was lost for words and he just turned his back to Myungsoo, “…thought you were my best friend… ditching me…,” I faintly heard him mumble.

I then turned to my left to face Myungsoo.

“So, how about it?” he raised an eyebrow.

“You’re not tricking me right? For someone as good as 'you' asking someone like ‘me’ to be your ‘dance’ partner…?” still can’t believe what I've just heard.

“Am I the type of person who likes to trick people, Eunhee-ah? I’m not Sungyeol…”

“Yah!” I heard Sungyeol gave a shout of protest.

Myungsoo looked right at me and our eyes met. Through his eyes I can really see that he was sincere. So I gave him a smile and finally nodded

“Great, I’ll wait for you at the dorm’s dance studio after dinner then,” he gave a lopsided grin that showed me his dimple; I felt a zing pass through me.

I turned back to my notebook and continued on to write nonsense…This guy sure knows how to make my heart flutter…

There are certain factors that can explain why 4Minute don't seem to be in high spirits to pull off a strong, captivating performance. Myungsoo is sharp to be able to notice this. Since they seem to be just doing it for show, there's no passion in their performance. It's like they've lost their touch when they don't know what dancing truly is anymore to them--like its value becomes lost to them over time. This happens to one's interest that doesn't become a passion. Passion is what keeps one grounded and focused on his/her lifelong dream/goal. Another possible factor could be anxiety about going up against The Syndicate in the showdown if they're worried about whether the band's performance would overpower theirs.

Great job with the details. Though, 4Minute's part seems to be lacking. I understand that it's hard for you to describe their dance routine since this isn't your area of interest. Anybody can get an idea of how their performance looks like from watching video clips of 2NE1 performing "I Am The Best."

xD Sungjong and his divaness... Myungsoo is glad to have his friend back. It had been awkward and tense between the two of them when Sungyeol kept avoiding him after seeing the two sleeping next to each other. That didn't make it easy for him to be worried about his best friend. From watching her perform, Myungsoo understands Eunhee's love of music by the passion that she puts into her performance. It's like a reflection of himself in the way that he feels about dancing. Being a dance expert himself, it's easy for him to pick out any flaws in 4Minute's choreography. He could make a great dance teacher. With his help, Eunhee can improve on her dancing in time for the dance off between Jihyun and her. When there's a chance, he could make it up to her and apologize for his behavior towards her that one evening. "Sleepless Dream" is a nice song. For the audience to be moved by it, it must be a song that reaches out to them in spirit in which they can relate to it. The reaction from Eunhee, E-Young, and Injoon at the end can either be good or bad. Judging from the response they received from the audience as they were performing, it's likely that they've come out as the winner of this showdown. There's no doubt that Myungsoo and Sungyeol are among those who've voted for The Syndicate to show their support.

4Minute did come off as flashy in their performance since they're aiming to impress the audience with their dance moves. Being flashy isn't enough for a performance to move the audience. What's lacking in their performance is connection with the people watching them. This is what The Syndicate's performance has. It's what makes them the winner in this case.

Hearing his confession seemed to have pulled somewhat on her heart strings. After an awkward pause, it looked like she shrugged it off and remarked jokingly to ease the tension in the air. Since she didn't know how else to respond, she figured that making light of the situation is the best way to go.

It's good that Sungyeol is speaking to Myungsoo again. Even though he was being harsh towards her, Myungsoo does care about her and mean well. Since he loves her, he's already forgiven her in his heart. The concern that's evident in his tone of voice proves it. Sungyeol's got a point, though. Myungsoo did come off as insensitive by not being understanding of her and her position. It seems that Sungyeol has matured despite his childish demeanor in order for him to say this to him. He is slowly turning into a man. Love can change a person.

So, Eunhee is not so oblivious after all. She is aware of her own feelings as well as others' around her. For her to not have the heart to reject him, she must be worried about hurting Sungyeol's feelings and causing a rift between them. He did a nice thing for her by being there for her when she needs to be comforted and some cheering up, so it won't feel right to her to kill the mood by turning him down. She is considerate to be concerned about his feelings. However, she's giving him false hope by not letting him know that she doesn't feel the same way. It's not awkward to tell him that she likes him as a friend or a brother. That's better than pushing him away or not showing any sign that she cares for him in some way. At least Sungyeol has the chance to prove himself to Eunhee in expressing his love for her. "Nothing ventured, nothing gained." Then he'd know when to give up with no regrets once he discovered that she doesn't return his feelings. It would be easier for him to let her go then so that she could be happy with the one she truly loves.

Do your best to describe the showdown in detail.

I've decided to point out some mistakes I've spotted to help you improve on your English writing skills. It would be too much if I point out every single one. This is just to give you an idea of what to work on.

Some Ch. 17 mistakes:

I like you Eunhee
* Comma after "you"

why thank you there Sungyeol.
* Comma after "there"

I like you too my friend
* Comma after "too"

* Note: In some sentences, a pair of commas is needed to separate the title (like "my friend") or the name of the person from the entire phrase to make the whole thing flow smoothly when it serves as an interruption.
Example: This, my friend, is a Kitara.

I stopped on my tracks and placed my hand over my chest.
* The preposition should be "in" instead of "on."

You made her cry for God sake!
Correction: God's sake

She hasn’t made up her mind yet so I still have a chance
* Comma after "yet"

But if you ever make her cry again, I will certainly not let you go Myungsoo
* Comma after "go"

I turned my back on him as I pulled up the covers, leaving him there flabbergasted.
Correction: leaving him flabbergasted there

The showdown and showcase is nearing, plus I still need to improve my dancing skills.
Correction: The showdown and the showcase are nearing; plus, I still need to improve my dancing skills.

I gradually closed my eyes and with a tired heart, I finally fell asleep.
Correction #1: I gradually closed my eyes, and with a tired heart, I finally fell asleep.
Correction #2: I gradually closed my eyes. With a tired heart, I finally fell asleep.

The Kitara looks like one hi-tech, cool instrument. I saw a little of how it works by checking out LED Apple, which you'd mentioned to me in one of your previous messages.

We can see how Eunhee came to love and appreciate music. It's because she was influenced by her father at a very young age. He taught her everything he knows about music. Through music, the two share a special bond. That's why she feels so strongly about music. It reminds her of her deceased father. In memory of him, she pours her heart and soul into the music she creates and plays.
