Dance To the Melody

Eunhee’s POV

The next morning, I woke up with dark circles under my eyes. I’ve gotten a blast of inspiration and stayed up all night composing. When I walked into my room (which I shared with E-Young) after washing up, E-Young was already getting ready for breakfast.

“Stayed up all night again? It’s a miracle that you’re able to wake up without me spraying you with water like usual…” uttered E-Young as she put on her blazer.

I chuckled, “You know why I’m excited… we have vocal class on first period, I’m just curious to what Mrs. Park will teach us today. Plus the weekend is just around the corner.”

I then walked over to the mirror and start brushing my hair.

 “I know, I know… I just hope we won’t be doing breathing exercises today. The last time we did it I nearly passed out,” she pouted.

“Don’t worry E-Young-ah, I’m sure Mrs. Park has something else in store,” I cheered her up.

“You sure are optimistic, don’t forget that you also have your least favorite class today… which is dance class,” teased E-Young.

Upon hearing on what she said, I swiftly took the nearest soft toy and toss it at her. Unfortunately she was quicker and the soft toy hit the closing door instead. I cursed as I heard her laughter in the distance.

That girl… she really does know how to brake the mood…

~~~~~~
While waiting for Mrs. Park to enter the class, I took my time to observe my surroundings. I saw students chatting, listening to their IPods, doodling, and a bunch of other stuffs. E-Young was also busy reading a novel.
I then focused my eyes on the one sitting at the back of the class beside the window. Myungsoo was looking outside with a bored expression on his face. I can’t help but wonder what he’s thinking right now.
He doesn’t smile often and no one can really read his expressions at times, which caused students to call him ‘poker-faced’ or ‘the ice-prince’. I felt my cheeks burned as I remember the smile he gave me last night; he looked even more charming and sweet when he smiles. Even if it was just for a second, it’s enough to make my heart flutter.
Eventually I averted my gaze; afraid that he’ll notice.
But then I was greeted by Sungyeol who was making faces at me. Was he trying to be cute or something?
I crossed my arms, merong-ed at him and turned my attention to the front again. Not long after that, Mrs. Park walked in and the whole class became silent.
“Alright students, let’s get started by warming up. Everybody stand up please!”
Accompanied by the piano, we all warmed up our vocals in harmony. After warming up, we all sat back down and waited for Mrs. Park to start the lesson.
Mrs. Park walked towards the whiteboard and wrote the word ‘duet’ on it.
“Okay class, today’s lesson will be all about duets,” said Mrs. Park as she tapped the marker on the whiteboard.
“A duet is when two voices harmonized together as one. In a perfectly sung duet, the two voices ebb and flow and twist and blend and play and lift in a way that makes a wonderfully pure whole. Therefore finding a partner who has a singing voice that blends well with yours is the most important thing about singing a duet,” she continued.
“Can anyone tell me what type of songs is usually sung in a duet?”
E-Young immediately puts her hand up, “Love songs!”
“That’s absolutely right. But to make singing a love song believable in a duet is not that easy, there should be some chemistry between you and your partner. When you sing to each other, your eyes should meet, and it should show feelings between the both of you.”
 “And now, I need two volunteers to sing a duet for me…” murmured Mrs. Park as she scanned the room and observed us one by one.
The class was filled with whispers and murmurs of students who were feeling excited, wondering who’ll be chosen this time.
 “Hmm, how about you Eunhee? And… maybe Myungsoo?”
The whole class suddenly grew silent and turned all of their attention to us. I was totally rooted to my seat, not knowing what to do.
Why does it have to be me…? And knowing that I’ll be doing it with Myungsoo makes my heart beat faster in nervousness…
“Come on both of you, come up to the front please,” called Mrs. Park once again.
I inhaled deeply, got up from my seat and slowly made my way up to the front of the class.
Myungsoo’s POV
What!? Me?
The reason why I chose to sit at the back in the first place was to avoid any type of attention at all. But I guess in Mrs. Park’s class you’re never safe wherever you are…
I leaned back on my chair and ruffled my hair, refusing to get up from my seat. But then Sungyeol nudged me and gestured me to go.
I conceded with a sigh and without that much enthusiasm I went up to the front, took the music sheet from Mrs. Park and positioned myself beside Eunhee.
I looked over at Eunhee, she shyly smiled and nodded at me. Why am I suddenly felt nervous…?
When Mrs. Park started to play the piano and signaled us to proceed, I reluctantly started to sing…
I love you, I love you
The words that I can’t bear anymore
My trembling heart
The words that I kept hiding in my heart
Then Eunhee joined in…
Just like the sunshine that glaringly shines on me when the morning comes
You, who always shine like the sunshine
Yeah, that’s what you are for me
I was a little surprised that Eunhee’s voice was able to beautifully blend with mine. She looked over at me, smiling as she sang. Then out of the blue I started to feel something different…
I like you, I like you
You, who’s always comfortably at my side,
You, who’s always protecting me
Just like a big great tree
I nervously shot a few sidelong glances at her when she sang her part, but I quickly avert my gaze when she was about to look at me…
Sometimes I don’t even know why
My heart feels like enjoying this
I can’t stop smiling in front of you
Just smiling like a fool
I’m starting to enjoy this and I didn’t even notice that I was already smiling…
Just like the sunshine that glaringly shines on me when the morning comes
You, who always shine like the sunshine
Yeah, that’s what you are for me
Our relationship may still be awkward
Me, who’ll always carefully approach you
Today too, carefully
We then turned to look at each other, smiling as we sang the last part together…
We, who’s been together for such a long time
Even after such a long time
Let’s always get along with each other, comfortably
You’ll always be by my side
I’m always by your side
Let’s be together forever…
When the last note was played, the class broke into applause, cheers, and some were whistling, including Mrs. Park.
“Bravo, bravo… you two did really well. Both of your voices blend in beautifully and the chemistry was also there,” she smiled.
I gave them a one last bow before hastily returning to my seat. I really can’t stand the embarrassment.
Sungyeol greeted me with a pat at the back, “That was cool man, didn’t know there’s a sensitive side in you & watching Eunhee sang like that, made me look at her differently now…”
I shrugged. “It was just acting…”
“Acting? It looked so convincing to me...” mumbled Sungyeol.
I stole a glance at Eunhee, she was cheerfully taking notes & was brushing away strands of her hair once in a while.
Was I really acting…? It felt fairly different…
I placed my hand over my chest; I swear I felt my heart skipped a beat.
There are certain factors that can explain why 4Minute don't seem to be in high spirits to pull off a strong, captivating performance. Myungsoo is sharp to be able to notice this. Since they seem to be just doing it for show, there's no passion in their performance. It's like they've lost their touch when they don't know what dancing truly is anymore to them--like its value becomes lost to them over time. This happens to one's interest that doesn't become a passion. Passion is what keeps one grounded and focused on his/her lifelong dream/goal. Another possible factor could be anxiety about going up against The Syndicate in the showdown if they're worried about whether the band's performance would overpower theirs.
Great job with the details. Though, 4Minute's part seems to be lacking. I understand that it's hard for you to describe their dance routine since this isn't your area of interest. Anybody can get an idea of how their performance looks like from watching video clips of 2NE1 performing "I Am The Best."
xD Sungjong and his divaness... Myungsoo is glad to have his friend back. It had been awkward and tense between the two of them when Sungyeol kept avoiding him after seeing the two sleeping next to each other. That didn't make it easy for him to be worried about his best friend. From watching her perform, Myungsoo understands Eunhee's love of music by the passion that she puts into her performance. It's like a reflection of himself in the way that he feels about dancing. Being a dance expert himself, it's easy for him to pick out any flaws in 4Minute's choreography. He could make a great dance teacher. With his help, Eunhee can improve on her dancing in time for the dance off between Jihyun and her. When there's a chance, he could make it up to her and apologize for his behavior towards her that one evening. "Sleepless Dream" is a nice song. For the audience to be moved by it, it must be a song that reaches out to them in spirit in which they can relate to it. The reaction from Eunhee, E-Young, and Injoon at the end can either be good or bad. Judging from the response they received from the audience as they were performing, it's likely that they've come out as the winner of this showdown. There's no doubt that Myungsoo and Sungyeol are among those who've voted for The Syndicate to show their support.
4Minute did come off as flashy in their performance since they're aiming to impress the audience with their dance moves. Being flashy isn't enough for a performance to move the audience. What's lacking in their performance is connection with the people watching them. This is what The Syndicate's performance has. It's what makes them the winner in this case.
Hearing his confession seemed to have pulled somewhat on her heart strings. After an awkward pause, it looked like she shrugged it off and remarked jokingly to ease the tension in the air. Since she didn't know how else to respond, she figured that making light of the situation is the best way to go.
It's good that Sungyeol is speaking to Myungsoo again. Even though he was being harsh towards her, Myungsoo does care about her and mean well. Since he loves her, he's already forgiven her in his heart. The concern that's evident in his tone of voice proves it. Sungyeol's got a point, though. Myungsoo did come off as insensitive by not being understanding of her and her position. It seems that Sungyeol has matured despite his childish demeanor in order for him to say this to him. He is slowly turning into a man. Love can change a person.
So, Eunhee is not so oblivious after all. She is aware of her own feelings as well as others' around her. For her to not have the heart to reject him, she must be worried about hurting Sungyeol's feelings and causing a rift between them. He did a nice thing for her by being there for her when she needs to be comforted and some cheering up, so it won't feel right to her to kill the mood by turning him down. She is considerate to be concerned about his feelings. However, she's giving him false hope by not letting him know that she doesn't feel the same way. It's not awkward to tell him that she likes him as a friend or a brother. That's better than pushing him away or not showing any sign that she cares for him in some way. At least Sungyeol has the chance to prove himself to Eunhee in expressing his love for her. "Nothing ventured, nothing gained." Then he'd know when to give up with no regrets once he discovered that she doesn't return his feelings. It would be easier for him to let her go then so that she could be happy with the one she truly loves.
Do your best to describe the showdown in detail.
I've decided to point out some mistakes I've spotted to help you improve on your English writing skills. It would be too much if I point out every single one. This is just to give you an idea of what to work on.
Some Ch. 17 mistakes:
I like you Eunhee
* Comma after "you"
why thank you there Sungyeol.
* Comma after "there"
I like you too my friend
* Comma after "too"
* Note: In some sentences, a pair of commas is needed to separate the title (like "my friend") or the name of the person from the entire phrase to make the whole thing flow smoothly when it serves as an interruption.
Example: This, my friend, is a Kitara.
I stopped on my tracks and placed my hand over my chest.
* The preposition should be "in" instead of "on."
You made her cry for God sake!
Correction: God's sake
She hasn’t made up her mind yet so I still have a chance
* Comma after "yet"
But if you ever make her cry again, I will certainly not let you go Myungsoo
* Comma after "go"
I turned my back on him as I pulled up the covers, leaving him there flabbergasted.
Correction: leaving him flabbergasted there
The showdown and showcase is nearing, plus I still need to improve my dancing skills.
Correction: The showdown and the showcase are nearing; plus, I still need to improve my dancing skills.
I gradually closed my eyes and with a tired heart, I finally fell asleep.
Correction #1: I gradually closed my eyes, and with a tired heart, I finally fell asleep.
Correction #2: I gradually closed my eyes. With a tired heart, I finally fell asleep.
The Kitara looks like one hi-tech, cool instrument. I saw a little of how it works by checking out LED Apple, which you'd mentioned to me in one of your previous messages.
We can see how Eunhee came to love and appreciate music. It's because she was influenced by her father at a very young age. He taught her everything he knows about music. Through music, the two share a special bond. That's why she feels so strongly about music. It reminds her of her deceased father. In memory of him, she pours her heart and soul into the music she creates and plays.
