Dance To the Melody

Myungsoo’s POV

Something was bothering me, walking to class had never been this silent before. I looked over at Sungyeol who was walking slowly beside me. He was unusually quiet today and by the looks of it, his mind was somewhere else.

“Yeollie-ah! Is something the matter?” I nudged him.

“Oh Myungsoo-ah! I’m sorry, I wasn’t listening… What were you saying again?” asked Sungyeol as he finally came back down to Earth.

I sighed. “I said, is something the matter? You seem awfully quiet today and you haven’t been yourself lately…”

“Ah, nothing’s wrong! I guess I just have a lot in my mind… You know my mom called yesterday, it’s just some family matter… So don’t worry about it,” Sungyeol waved his hands while giving me that childish grin.

But somehow I wasn’t totally convinced, there was still something that he wasn’t telling me. I was about to ask him again but then his steps gradually quickened and he went straight into the classroom. I heaved a sigh; I guess I’ll have a pep talk with him later.

As I sat down on my usual seat at the back, beside the window, I looked around the classroom. Once again, I felt that something was missing. Then I noticed E-Young and the empty seat beside her.

That’s it, Eunhee was missing! Well not literally but clearly she wasn’t here in the class. Come to think of it, I didn’t saw her in the dining room either this morning. I was about to get up and ask E-Young about it when Ms. Jung stepped in, I wasn’t give a choice but to stay on my seat.

Throughout the lesson I was restless, I couldn’t concentrate and my mind kept on coming back to Eunhee. I thought that she was going to be late or something but Eunhee never came through that door and I gradually became worried.

When the recess bell rang, I literally jumped out of my seat and immediately approached E-Young. She didn’t notice me at first so I lightly tapped on her shoulder.

“Yes?” she finally turned to face me. Her eyes then grew wide and did I just saw a glint of fear?

“Oh! M-Myungsoo! D-Did I d-do s-something w-wrong?” she stuttered.

I tilted my head and blinked. “Umm, nothing’s wrong. I just wanted to know about Eunhee, do you know where she is? I haven’t seen her around since this morning.”

“Ah, yes, Eunhee’s at the dorm, resting. She caught a cold and had a slight fever last night,” E-Young explained.

“I see, have she eaten breakfast and took her medicine yet?” I asked.

“Well I did make some porridge for her but I didn’t want to wake her up so I just left it there on the bedside table. I don’t know whether she ate them or not… why do you ask?” she narrowed her eyes at me.

I shrugged. “Nothing, it’s just unusual that’s all. She never skipped classics… well, thanks for the info there E-Young,” I gave her a slight wave before I left the classroom.

“Hey Sungyeol! Wait up!” I shouted as I ran towards him.

He turned around. “Yah, Myungsoo, what took you so long?”

“Sorry, I was just talking to someone. Hey, can I ask you a favor? I’ll be skipping classes’ today so can you please take notes and collect my homework for me?” I said as I shoved my books into his hands.

“Huh? Wait, how? Why? WHAT?!” bolted Sungyeol looking dumbfounded.

I chuckled. “Thanks there buddy! I owe you one!” I gave him one last pat on the back before I dashed towards the entrance.

“YAH! KIM MYUNGSOO, WHERE THE HELL ARE YOU GOING?!” I laughed, stepping out of the WAA building as I heard him shout after me.

As I ran up the steps headed for our dorm, I couldn’t help myself from thinking. Why am I so worried when it comes to Eunhee? Furthermore, I’ve never even skipped classes because of a girl before. I heaved a sigh, I guess I’ve grown attached to her this last few days.

I stood there in front of her room looking like a fool; I had been hesitating whether I should knock or leave. But then I really wanted to know if she was alright so without a second thought I knocked.

“Eunhee-ah, it’s me Myungsoo. Are you alright?”

No answer.

“Eunhee-ah, please open up,” I called out to her and knocked once again.

Still, there was no answer. This is nerve racking so eventually I tried the door knob. Surprisingly it wasn’t locked; hence I pushed the door slightly and peeked into the room.

“Eunhee…?” I whispered as I looked around the room.

Then I saw her, sleeping soundlessly on her bed. I quietly laughed as I slowly walked towards her. I should’ve known, this girl can sleep through anything even if there was an earthquake. I crouched down beside her bed and put my hand on her forehead. I let out a sigh in relief when I felt that her fever had dropped down, but she still needs to drink her medicine. I took the uneaten porridge from the bedside table and headed for the dining room to heat it up.

When I came back she was still on her bed, so I decided to finally wake her up. This girl needs to eat.

“Eunhee-ah, wake up!” I half whispered while shaking her. She twitched a little but didn’t wake up, so I shook her even harder. “Eunhee…”

“Urgh… just leave alone… ” she mumbled. Just before she could turned her back on me I grabbed her shoulder and kept her in place. Eunhee slowly opened her eyes and without getting up she stared back at me.

 “Is this a dream…?” she whispered.

I let out a chuckle. “It’s not a dream Eunhee-ah, you should get up and wash your face. You need to eat and drink your cold medicine,” I explained.

She blinked a few times before she finally got out of her bed and I watched her groggily walked towards the bathroom. I ran my fingers through my hair; she must’ve been too tired to even ask me why I was here.

When she came back, Eunhee looked a tad better but the tiredness was still there. She sat down on her bed and I handed over the bowl of porridge.

“I don’t feel like eating,” said Eunhee, pushing away the bowl.

“You need to, and after drinking your medicine you can go back to sleep,” I persuaded her by serving a spoon full of porridge towards her.

“Fine…” muttered Eunhee, as she took a bite out of the spoon. In the end I spoon fed her.

After she drank her cold medicine, I tucked her in as she went back to sleep. I didn’t want to leave her yet so I stayed there and kept watch, her hair once in a while. As time passed, I too, gradually fell asleep.

Sungyeol’s POV

“Aish, what’s with everyone today? Asking me to do a favor here and there…” I grumbled to myself as I stormed up the steps to our dorm.

First it was Myungsoo, then Sungjong, Mrs. Park, Hoya, Mr. Kang, some girl at the library, and then E-Young. The last time I checked, today was totally not April fool or my birthday. Well since this was the last one and it involved Eunhee, I decided to let all grudges go and accepted it with open heart. I also heard that she was sick and it was probably because of me, so this was an opportunity for me to visit her and apologize once again.

Holding Eunhee’s notes and homework firmly with one hand, I knocked the door to Eunhee’s room with the other. On the second knock I felt that the door slightly moved. Strange, I thought. I tried the door knob, and as I expected it wasn’t locked. I opened it and stepped inside.

“Hello? Is anybody in-” I choked in my words and stopped on my tracks.

My eyes widen and gradually a frown formed on my face. Somehow seeing the scene in front of me pained my heart and my breathing quickened. So this is how it felt when someone stabbed you on the back.

As much as it hurts me I didn’t want to cause a scene and after all he’s my best buddy. So with sadness overwhelmed me I placed her books on her desk. Not wanting to wake up the sleeping souls, I slowly and quietly left the room.

I sighed as I stepped out of the dorm and walked towards the garden, hunched.

Today was certainly not a good day…

There are certain factors that can explain why 4Minute don't seem to be in high spirits to pull off a strong, captivating performance. Myungsoo is sharp to be able to notice this. Since they seem to be just doing it for show, there's no passion in their performance. It's like they've lost their touch when they don't know what dancing truly is anymore to them--like its value becomes lost to them over time. This happens to one's interest that doesn't become a passion. Passion is what keeps one grounded and focused on his/her lifelong dream/goal. Another possible factor could be anxiety about going up against The Syndicate in the showdown if they're worried about whether the band's performance would overpower theirs.

Great job with the details. Though, 4Minute's part seems to be lacking. I understand that it's hard for you to describe their dance routine since this isn't your area of interest. Anybody can get an idea of how their performance looks like from watching video clips of 2NE1 performing "I Am The Best."

xD Sungjong and his divaness... Myungsoo is glad to have his friend back. It had been awkward and tense between the two of them when Sungyeol kept avoiding him after seeing the two sleeping next to each other. That didn't make it easy for him to be worried about his best friend. From watching her perform, Myungsoo understands Eunhee's love of music by the passion that she puts into her performance. It's like a reflection of himself in the way that he feels about dancing. Being a dance expert himself, it's easy for him to pick out any flaws in 4Minute's choreography. He could make a great dance teacher. With his help, Eunhee can improve on her dancing in time for the dance off between Jihyun and her. When there's a chance, he could make it up to her and apologize for his behavior towards her that one evening. "Sleepless Dream" is a nice song. For the audience to be moved by it, it must be a song that reaches out to them in spirit in which they can relate to it. The reaction from Eunhee, E-Young, and Injoon at the end can either be good or bad. Judging from the response they received from the audience as they were performing, it's likely that they've come out as the winner of this showdown. There's no doubt that Myungsoo and Sungyeol are among those who've voted for The Syndicate to show their support.

4Minute did come off as flashy in their performance since they're aiming to impress the audience with their dance moves. Being flashy isn't enough for a performance to move the audience. What's lacking in their performance is connection with the people watching them. This is what The Syndicate's performance has. It's what makes them the winner in this case.

Hearing his confession seemed to have pulled somewhat on her heart strings. After an awkward pause, it looked like she shrugged it off and remarked jokingly to ease the tension in the air. Since she didn't know how else to respond, she figured that making light of the situation is the best way to go.

It's good that Sungyeol is speaking to Myungsoo again. Even though he was being harsh towards her, Myungsoo does care about her and mean well. Since he loves her, he's already forgiven her in his heart. The concern that's evident in his tone of voice proves it. Sungyeol's got a point, though. Myungsoo did come off as insensitive by not being understanding of her and her position. It seems that Sungyeol has matured despite his childish demeanor in order for him to say this to him. He is slowly turning into a man. Love can change a person.

So, Eunhee is not so oblivious after all. She is aware of her own feelings as well as others' around her. For her to not have the heart to reject him, she must be worried about hurting Sungyeol's feelings and causing a rift between them. He did a nice thing for her by being there for her when she needs to be comforted and some cheering up, so it won't feel right to her to kill the mood by turning him down. She is considerate to be concerned about his feelings. However, she's giving him false hope by not letting him know that she doesn't feel the same way. It's not awkward to tell him that she likes him as a friend or a brother. That's better than pushing him away or not showing any sign that she cares for him in some way. At least Sungyeol has the chance to prove himself to Eunhee in expressing his love for her. "Nothing ventured, nothing gained." Then he'd know when to give up with no regrets once he discovered that she doesn't return his feelings. It would be easier for him to let her go then so that she could be happy with the one she truly loves.

Do your best to describe the showdown in detail.

I've decided to point out some mistakes I've spotted to help you improve on your English writing skills. It would be too much if I point out every single one. This is just to give you an idea of what to work on.

Some Ch. 17 mistakes:

I like you Eunhee
* Comma after "you"

why thank you there Sungyeol.
* Comma after "there"

I like you too my friend
* Comma after "too"

* Note: In some sentences, a pair of commas is needed to separate the title (like "my friend") or the name of the person from the entire phrase to make the whole thing flow smoothly when it serves as an interruption.
Example: This, my friend, is a Kitara.

I stopped on my tracks and placed my hand over my chest.
* The preposition should be "in" instead of "on."

You made her cry for God sake!
Correction: God's sake

She hasn’t made up her mind yet so I still have a chance
* Comma after "yet"

But if you ever make her cry again, I will certainly not let you go Myungsoo
* Comma after "go"

I turned my back on him as I pulled up the covers, leaving him there flabbergasted.
Correction: leaving him flabbergasted there

The showdown and showcase is nearing, plus I still need to improve my dancing skills.
Correction: The showdown and the showcase are nearing; plus, I still need to improve my dancing skills.

I gradually closed my eyes and with a tired heart, I finally fell asleep.
Correction #1: I gradually closed my eyes, and with a tired heart, I finally fell asleep.
Correction #2: I gradually closed my eyes. With a tired heart, I finally fell asleep.

The Kitara looks like one hi-tech, cool instrument. I saw a little of how it works by checking out LED Apple, which you'd mentioned to me in one of your previous messages.

We can see how Eunhee came to love and appreciate music. It's because she was influenced by her father at a very young age. He taught her everything he knows about music. Through music, the two share a special bond. That's why she feels so strongly about music. It reminds her of her deceased father. In memory of him, she pours her heart and soul into the music she creates and plays.
