Dance To the Melody

Eunhee’s POV

I was running to class as if my life depends on it. I was going to be late for homeroom once again, all because of that annoying Sungyeol. Well with me being late isn’t something new to either of my homeroom teacher, Ms. Jung or my classmates. But today was different; I really don’t want to be late this time.

Today was when the results from our midyear exams will be handed out and Ms. Jung personally said to me that she’ll read my results in front of the whole class if I’m late for more than 15 minutes. It’s not that I have something to hide, I’m sure I did well. I just can’t stand the embarrassment afterwards.

I looked at my watch and saw that I have 3 more minutes. I can still make it this time, and with that I picked up my speed.

Upon arriving, I hurriedly opened the classroom door. I stopped for a minute to control my breathing before stepping inside. Looking back at how fast I ran, I literally can win the 100m dash for sure.

“Morning Ms. Song, late again I see,” greeted Ms. Jung.

“I’m really sorry, I got hold up this morning…”

I heard someone choke trying to hold in their laugh: it must’ve been Sungyeol.

Ms. Jung looked at the clock before turning to me

“Well at least you made it within the 15 minutes deadline. Here’s your exam results and please take your seat.”

“Thank you Ms. Jung.”

I gave a 90 degree bow before I swiftly took my seat. Curiously, I scanned my results sheet. I really hoped that I did well this time.

Name               :           Eunhee, Song

ID No.             :           12030110141057

Vocals                      :           A

Music Theory           :           A

Music History           :           B

Traditional Music      :           A

Modern Music          :           A

The Classics             :           A+

Composing               :           A+

Acting                       :           B

Dancing                     :           D

Well I guess I did Okay… Wait a minute…

I looked through my results sheet one more time.

DANCING…… D?!

I sighed in disappointment; I really thought that I could at least get a C. I’ve been practicing really hard for that exam… I even sacrificed not going to my favorite idols’ concerts just to get extra hours for practice…

As I dropped my head on the table in distress, someone was poking me from behind.

“Eunhee-ah, how’s your results?” I heard Injoon whisper.

Without enthusiasm I answered, “The usual…”

“What?! You failed dancing again?” he whispered back.

I straightened up, turned back and glared at him.

“Yah! I got a D this time…”

I gave him a sad smile before placing my head back on the table.

I let out another deep sigh.

Myungsoo’s POV

I watched as Eunhee took her seat and dropped her head on the table after reading her results. What is she disappointed at this time? Her grades are always above average… Ah, must’ve been her dancing grade again.

“Myungsoo-ah, how’s yours?” I heard Hoya whispered.

I turned to look at the guys who were sitting behind me, they were grinning, waiting for my answer.

I shrugged.

“Okay I guess, I got C for composing and traditional music, B for history & classics, the rest are all As…. Wait, I got A+ for dance.”

“Alright! I can’t believe that we all got the same results!” said Woohyun while doing a little celebratory dance.

I smirked and returned to face the front.

“Attention please, class! I’m sure that most of you did well on your midyear exams, but remember we still have the end of year examination and then there’s the annual showcase.”

Upon hearing about the showcase, most of my classmates cheered & that includes Dongwoo who gets excited easily.

I simply rolled my eyes, another semester of late practices for me.

“Since all you are graduating from WAA this year, I hope that each and every one of you works hard,” continued Ms. Jung.

“Yes Ms. Jung!” we all replied in unison.

“One more thing, for the annual showcase this year, we are inviting guests and representatives from various entertainment companies. So guys! Please don’t slack off and give out you best! That’s all for now and enjoy the rest of your classes today,” said Ms. Jung as she dismissed the class.

“Guys!” I heard Sungkyu called as students started to head out for their next class.

I turned around and joined the group circle.

“This is our opportunity to get a contract signed; we can really make it big this time. So guys, we really need to manage our time wisely” said Sungkyu.

“Woohyun, you must keep improving those vocals. Dongwoo and Hoya, for dance and rap I leave it to you guys. Sungyeol, stop fooling around and be serious this time. Sungjong, work on perfecting the dance steps okay and for Myungsoo… Keep up the good work; just loosen up a little bit and smile more, you’re the face of our group.”

Upon hearing those words from our group leader, we all just nod in acceptance.

Dongwoo then held out his right hand and we followed, stacking them up one by one.

Then we all cried in unison, “INFINITE FIGHTING!”

There are certain factors that can explain why 4Minute don't seem to be in high spirits to pull off a strong, captivating performance. Myungsoo is sharp to be able to notice this. Since they seem to be just doing it for show, there's no passion in their performance. It's like they've lost their touch when they don't know what dancing truly is anymore to them--like its value becomes lost to them over time. This happens to one's interest that doesn't become a passion. Passion is what keeps one grounded and focused on his/her lifelong dream/goal. Another possible factor could be anxiety about going up against The Syndicate in the showdown if they're worried about whether the band's performance would overpower theirs.

Great job with the details. Though, 4Minute's part seems to be lacking. I understand that it's hard for you to describe their dance routine since this isn't your area of interest. Anybody can get an idea of how their performance looks like from watching video clips of 2NE1 performing "I Am The Best."

xD Sungjong and his divaness... Myungsoo is glad to have his friend back. It had been awkward and tense between the two of them when Sungyeol kept avoiding him after seeing the two sleeping next to each other. That didn't make it easy for him to be worried about his best friend. From watching her perform, Myungsoo understands Eunhee's love of music by the passion that she puts into her performance. It's like a reflection of himself in the way that he feels about dancing. Being a dance expert himself, it's easy for him to pick out any flaws in 4Minute's choreography. He could make a great dance teacher. With his help, Eunhee can improve on her dancing in time for the dance off between Jihyun and her. When there's a chance, he could make it up to her and apologize for his behavior towards her that one evening. "Sleepless Dream" is a nice song. For the audience to be moved by it, it must be a song that reaches out to them in spirit in which they can relate to it. The reaction from Eunhee, E-Young, and Injoon at the end can either be good or bad. Judging from the response they received from the audience as they were performing, it's likely that they've come out as the winner of this showdown. There's no doubt that Myungsoo and Sungyeol are among those who've voted for The Syndicate to show their support.

4Minute did come off as flashy in their performance since they're aiming to impress the audience with their dance moves. Being flashy isn't enough for a performance to move the audience. What's lacking in their performance is connection with the people watching them. This is what The Syndicate's performance has. It's what makes them the winner in this case.

Hearing his confession seemed to have pulled somewhat on her heart strings. After an awkward pause, it looked like she shrugged it off and remarked jokingly to ease the tension in the air. Since she didn't know how else to respond, she figured that making light of the situation is the best way to go.

It's good that Sungyeol is speaking to Myungsoo again. Even though he was being harsh towards her, Myungsoo does care about her and mean well. Since he loves her, he's already forgiven her in his heart. The concern that's evident in his tone of voice proves it. Sungyeol's got a point, though. Myungsoo did come off as insensitive by not being understanding of her and her position. It seems that Sungyeol has matured despite his childish demeanor in order for him to say this to him. He is slowly turning into a man. Love can change a person.

So, Eunhee is not so oblivious after all. She is aware of her own feelings as well as others' around her. For her to not have the heart to reject him, she must be worried about hurting Sungyeol's feelings and causing a rift between them. He did a nice thing for her by being there for her when she needs to be comforted and some cheering up, so it won't feel right to her to kill the mood by turning him down. She is considerate to be concerned about his feelings. However, she's giving him false hope by not letting him know that she doesn't feel the same way. It's not awkward to tell him that she likes him as a friend or a brother. That's better than pushing him away or not showing any sign that she cares for him in some way. At least Sungyeol has the chance to prove himself to Eunhee in expressing his love for her. "Nothing ventured, nothing gained." Then he'd know when to give up with no regrets once he discovered that she doesn't return his feelings. It would be easier for him to let her go then so that she could be happy with the one she truly loves.

Do your best to describe the showdown in detail.

I've decided to point out some mistakes I've spotted to help you improve on your English writing skills. It would be too much if I point out every single one. This is just to give you an idea of what to work on.

Some Ch. 17 mistakes:

I like you Eunhee
* Comma after "you"

why thank you there Sungyeol.
* Comma after "there"

I like you too my friend
* Comma after "too"

* Note: In some sentences, a pair of commas is needed to separate the title (like "my friend") or the name of the person from the entire phrase to make the whole thing flow smoothly when it serves as an interruption.
Example: This, my friend, is a Kitara.

I stopped on my tracks and placed my hand over my chest.
* The preposition should be "in" instead of "on."

You made her cry for God sake!
Correction: God's sake

She hasn’t made up her mind yet so I still have a chance
* Comma after "yet"

But if you ever make her cry again, I will certainly not let you go Myungsoo
* Comma after "go"

I turned my back on him as I pulled up the covers, leaving him there flabbergasted.
Correction: leaving him flabbergasted there

The showdown and showcase is nearing, plus I still need to improve my dancing skills.
Correction: The showdown and the showcase are nearing; plus, I still need to improve my dancing skills.

I gradually closed my eyes and with a tired heart, I finally fell asleep.
Correction #1: I gradually closed my eyes, and with a tired heart, I finally fell asleep.
Correction #2: I gradually closed my eyes. With a tired heart, I finally fell asleep.

The Kitara looks like one hi-tech, cool instrument. I saw a little of how it works by checking out LED Apple, which you'd mentioned to me in one of your previous messages.

We can see how Eunhee came to love and appreciate music. It's because she was influenced by her father at a very young age. He taught her everything he knows about music. Through music, the two share a special bond. That's why she feels so strongly about music. It reminds her of her deceased father. In memory of him, she pours her heart and soul into the music she creates and plays.
