It has been a long time since the last. Wendy feels alive again on this dancefloor and she moved her body to the beat of the soundtrack. Bodies; sticky, sweaty, yet familiar rubbed against hers occasionally but that was fine because she knew she would be safe, she was with her trusted circle of friends. All of whom were in the club to shake off the accumulated stress from their lives. Young as they were, yet, the pressure they faced daily was nearly crushing. Veterans in the working society would frown upon them.
The millennials, too weak-willed. They would comment carelessly, unable to empathise with the struggles the junior population face in this fast-changing world and forgotten the pains they themselves have endured whilst they were younger.
Whatever. Wendy said. At work she could be the meek and obedient employee. Now, they were at the club and she could truly be herself.
Wendy noticed a careful watching pair of eyes on her. One that meant no hostility, only interest. Perhaps it was because of the way Wendy was dressed, too prim and proper for clubs. Perhaps it was the way Wendy had kept to her group of friends and turned down multiple advances towards her, not so politely at times. Perhaps it was the way Wendy casted easy smiles at her from time to time, because this stranger seemed kind.
A fleeting thought crossed Wendy’s mind. What are the odds that this girl was interested in her? Very low, especially in this country where homophobia was widely prevalent.
Acceptance in society. Whatever. To hell with that.
Her attention shifted back to her friends and the sight of them enjoying made Wendy happy.
“I think I am too old for this. Wendy, how the hell do you keep up?” Joy, the chicest of them all said as she huffed and made another half- attempt at shuffling.
Wendy shrugged lightly and loosened her tie as she bounced harder to the increasing tempo, a lazy half smile still on her face.
Beside her, Yeri, the youngest, had already yielded and was simply bobbing her head to the song track. “Feels like I am doing cardio. I don’t want to think about going back to work on Monday.”
Joy made a sound of disgust. “Come on, Yeri, it is still Friday night, don’t dampen the spirits here.”
Nodding in agreement to Joy’s words, Seulgi smiled widely.
“Shall we get a drink? Wendy?” Joy asked.
Wendy stopped dancing and nodded.
The girl was still staring intently at her and Wendy could not ignore that look. Never one to pick up girls in a club, Wendy thought that today might be an exception. This girl was alone now. Besides, Wendy liked the way she looked, full of curiosity yet like a fish out of water at the same time.
Joy had followed wherever Wendy’s attention was.
“Oh… I see…” Joy whispered naughtily into Wendy’s ears.
