Staring at the stage and sitting in the soon-to-be-filled venue, Irene felt the stone resting on her chest become heavier by the minute. She was sitting in a concert hall, in the middle seat, right at the first row. The young heiress of one of South Korea’s largest conglomerate was about to watch the performance of Wendy, the nation’s gem of a singer or South Korea’s Beyonce as they have dubbed her as. This would be the last time she would be watching Wendy like this, amongst the audience. Irene promised herself.
Their relationship was a taboo and if not for her tireless efforts put into snuffing out all paparazzi photos, they could have become the nation’s hottest and most scandalous topic.
Everything began when Irene returned to Seoul two years ago after receiving news that her grandfather was gravely ill and as per his appointment, Irene would be inheriting their family’s conglomerate, much to the dismay of all her other relatives. All was sudden, especially having to manage the entertainment branch of their business. It was tough at first but that was when she met Wendy. Irene found it amusing how she has never even heard about this artist while she was overseas, studying in Japan. However, once she did, Irene found herself wanting to know more.
Their first meeting happened during an event where several media and entertainment companies were invited to and Wendy, as the top artist of a rival company, tagged along with her CEO.
Irene could never forget the well-concealed forced smiles the artist had worn and the conversation they had with one another. Wendy was well-trained; trained to entertain guests. Yet, Irene was just as well-trained in reading facial expressions too and soon all walls came down between them. After that one meeting, Irene often found herself sifting through performance videos of the artist, and she always broke into a smile whenever she received news that Wendy has gotten yet another award to recognise her abilities.
Later, Irene started watching Wendy’s live performances and just like that, the conversation they had in that one night had extended to many more, both for work purposes and in private.
