Everything was set for Wendy Son and Kang Seulgi’s wedding.

The two had been together for a year, and during a trip to Las Vegas, the two decided to get married. They were going to elope in Vegas, but later decided against it, thinking better to save the formalities for home.

“Besides,” Wendy slurred, hanging halfway off of the chair in their hotel room. “What if you decide when we get home you don’t want to marry me anymore?”

“That won’t happen,” Seulgi sing-songed. “I love you!” She reached forward, tapping Wendy on the nose, who giggled in her drunken state.

The two were certain the other would call it off upon returning home to South Korea, but to their delight and surprise, they both were still willing to go through with it.

Wendy handled most of the wedding planning. Seulgi worked longer, harder hours than her, and it was easier for the both of them for Wendy to handle the forefront of it, albeit nothing was finalized without the other girl’s consent. Seulgi worked as a lawyer and did her best to return home early in the evening. She had taken her leave early a few nights to return home before Wendy to have dinner ready for her for when she arrived. Wendy was the owner of a chain of cinemas. Despite the chain being small, she never worried about her finances, and the two together were well off.

The wedding between Wendy Son and Kang Seulgi was in a week, and everything was set and ready and in place. The two were strangely calm, no worries or anxieties about it. They both knew what they were getting into, and were fully prepared to dive head-first into it.

However, there were multiple people not handling the marriage of Wendy Son and Kang Seulgi well.

The first was Kang Seulgi’s ex-wife, Kim Yerim.

Kim Yerim loved Seulgi with everything she had. A year ago, Seulgi had asked for a divorce, being bored with their relationship. Yerim, however, cited Seulgi as her ‘everything’, and was almost broken to pieces due to the sudden breakup. Bae Joohyun, a friend of Yerim and Seulgi’s, had been there for Yerim ever since. Everyone knew that Joohyun had feelings for Yerim, and that was partially why she stuck with Yerim so much. Yerim’s feelings for Joohyun, on the other hand, were still a little muddled, but she had made it clear she wasn’t ready for a labelled relationship quite yet.

The second was Park Sooyoung, the ex-fiancée of Wendy Son.

Wendy Son had been with Park Sooyoung for three years, and in their final year, had been engaged. During their engagement, Wendy Son had found a man who enticed and excited her, Min Yoongi. She had an affair with Yoongi for several months before Park Sooyoung, the girl who knew everything, found out. The two called off their engagement and ended their relationship. Two months later, Wendy and Yoongi also parted ways. Wendy had known Seulgi before, but had become close to the freshly divorced woman when a client of theirs clashed, requiring them to work together. They started a relationship not long after that, and a year later, were apt on marriage.

Both Wendy Son and Kang Seulgi knew there were a handful of people against their marriage.

Their families, specifically Seulgi’s, who thought this marriage came too quickly after her past divorce. Many of their friends thought the same way, and some, like Bae Joohyun, sided with those especially hurt by the wedding.

Albeit, all of them had RSVPed to their wedding, all confirming their attendance.

As the week before her wedding shortened into a few days, the worries and anxieties that were once barely there made themselves apparent, rushing up into Wendy’s chest and squeezing it closed.

She worried of the reaction of those she and Seulgi had previously hurt and used.

Unbeknownst to her, Park Sooyoung was going to do just that - the terrible reactions that Wendy so feared.

-private chat between baejujube and soosooyoungie-

soosooyoungie: remember that 1 time at brunch?? Abt a year ago?? When i told you i didnt care who wen was with and wasnt plotting revenge??

baejujube: yes

soosooyoungie: i take it back i care very much and am very much plotting revenge

soosooyoungie: deal-y-o

Although Park Sooyoung had a flair for the dramatic, she was also a reasonable, sensible person. Although she’d ultimately ruin the wedding for Kang Seulgi (there was no getting out of that), there was a 50/50 chance with Wendy - Wendy would realize what she did was wrong and that she always loved Sooyoung and Yoongi and Seulgi were just holes to fill the Sooyoung-shaped hole in her heart, or would make Wendy even more mad at Sooyoung than she already was (which was totally unfair; Wendy was the one who cheated, it should be Sooyoung that was mad).

Perhaps ruining the wedding for Kang Seulgi and winning Wendy back wasn’t such a bad thing for Seul - she, too, would realize the mistakes she made, and beg Kim Yerim for another chance. Oh, how Sooyoung so desperately wanted to see both Seulgi and Wendy on their knees in those luscious, pristine dresses, dirting the white fabrics while they pleaded for another woman before the woman she was about to marry. It was a surging hunger for her, an overwhelming feeling of the lovesick fool she so untimely was.

Despite her plans to disrupt the wedding, Sooyoung would object to saying she was still in love with Wendy Son. But even a blind man would be able to see through that lie; Sooyoung’s claims that her reasoning was because of her hatred towards Wendy and what she did, a favour for poor Kim Yerim, the never wasted opportunity to be the centre of attention were lies, thin lies, lies loosely stuck in a thin, quickly unravelling web.

The disruption wouldn’t be much, and how large the show Sooyoung put on and the outcome of it largely decided on those around her. How Wendy and Seulgi reacted, whether Wendy would take her back or kick her to the curb yet again. Whether Seulgi would grow angry with her. Whether the other guests would agree or detest. Truthfully, it wasn’t Sooyoung’s selfishness that was on display, but the values of those around her.

Although Sooyoung did all the work, especially the dirty, the true show, the main event on the main stage, was for everyone else.

People often labelled Sooyoung as an attention , overcome by selfishness and large ego. Really, Sooyoung was a selfless person, putting herself above and before others for the betterment of them. She was more than just a pretty face; her life’s work was giving people the voice they needed.

After her scandal, Wendy was labelled a literal , just another insatiable girl who thought herself better than everyone. In truth, Sooyoung saw her as such, and wouldn’t deny any claims, rumours, or insults pitted against her. Wendy’s true colours had shown, and had been her ultimate downfall; a pit there was no clawing your way out of, despite how long and sharp your claws were.

Together, Wendy and Sooyoung were the perfect embodiment of the seven sins, their relationship an exhibition of lust, gluttony, pride, envy, greed, wrath, and sloth.

However, some things were meant to be together, and they were just one of the best examples; God’s pride, a true match made in heaven.

Kim Yerim and Bae Joohyun travelled to the wedding of Kang Seulgi and Wendy Son together, leaving Sooyoung to drive over on her own, but the three had promised to sit and stay together at the wedding, as they weren’t sure if they knew anyone else going. There was also that underlying fear of knowing others in attendance - after the stunt Park Sooyoung was about to pull, first-hand accounts would surely change their perception of her.

Sooyoung arrived before Yerim and Joohyun, and she milled about on her own for a bit, unsure of what to do or where to go. She recognized a few people, but they were people she had only meant once or twice and were wrapped up in their own conversations and doings to pay any attention to Sooyoung.

That was strange for Sooyoung - she was used to someone calling her name whenever she arrived somewhere; knowing someone desperate to talk to her. But here, no one showed any of the slightest interest in her, and she found herself wheeling for an alternative.

It felt like hours to Sooyoung, who ended up sitting alone, before Yerim and Joohyun arrived. She leaped up, excitedly calling their names and beckoning them over.

The wedding was outdoors, with a slight wind chill. Yerim wore a black dress that reached her knees, and Joohyun wore a purple blouse with a yellow skirt, accentuated with purple. The colours themselves clashed awfully, but it somehow looked good on Joohyun. In contrast, Sooyoung was dressed much like Yerim - a plain dress that hung below her knees, and was a soft materialistic pink. Enough for her to stand out in the right crowd and blend in with the other.

“I saved seats for you two.” Sooyoung moved her cardigan and handbag off of two seats, allowing the girls to sit after they greeted one another.

“Thanks,” Joohyun provided for the both of them. “Have you been waiting long?”

Sooyoung shook her head. “Not long.”

The girls made small talk, mainly Sooyoung and Joohyun, Yerim remaining silent until Sooyoung leaned forward to speak to her.

“Yeri?” Sooyoung questioned. “How are you feeling?”

Yerim had a look of sober solemnity on her face; one of contemplation. “I’m fine.” she replied blandly, not making eye contact with Sooyoung. She stared forward, fixated on the chair in front of them.

“You’re sad,” Sooyoung pushed, seeing through Yerim’s lies. “I get it.”

Yerim looked over at Sooyoung. “Sometimes I forget my Seulgi is marrying your Wendy.”

“Sometimes I forget my Wendy is marrying your Seulgi.”

“We’re pretty selfish, aren’t we?”

“Very. But listen - this won’t be forever.”

“Nothing is ever forever.”

“Yerim,” Joohyun said pointedly, laying her hand on Yerim’s thigh. “Be positive. Please don’t go back to your eighth grade emo phase on us.”

“It was seventh.”

“That’s not the point. I know both of you are pretty torn up about this, but save the sulking for after. We were lucky to be invited. Let’s not ruin this for them. For once, please put them before yourselves.”

Yerim muttered an apology, but Sooyoung stayed quiet - she was (mostly) an honest woman, and knowing what she was soon going to do, she felt she had no right to agree with Joohyun, nor apologize to her.

Joohyun began to mindlessly babble; saying things that were supposed to comfort both girls, but ended up falling upon deaf ears, as neither Sooyoung nor Yerim found any importance in her words.

Sooyoung’s mind drifted to that of the details of the wedding, seeing elements of the one she had worked so hard to plan for her and Wendy. She had attended the wedding of Yerim and Seulgi, four years ago, and noticed repeated details of that, too - the same coloured flowers, the same style gazebo Seulgi and Yerim were married under, that now would be the same Seulgi and Wendy married under.

There was a little more mindless chatter before the ceremony started. First, there was music - a soft, piano-driven melody - and then both the mothers of Seulgi and Wendy came out, taking their seats. A few bridesmaids made their way down the aisle, standing at the altar next to the officiant. Two maids of honours made their ways out, also taking their places at the altar. Each girls’ dress was a light coloured pastel, making them look like a parade of Easter eggs.

The music changed, the piano now accompanied with a gentle violin, a tad of organ, and out stepped Kang Seulgi, wearing a lace dress with a V-necked bodice, the dress spooning out around her, her older brother on her arm.

Wendy Son and her father followed after, and Sooyoung didn’t know what she felt - a twang of jealousy, that she wasn’t Kang Seulgi; that overwhelming lovesick feeling, twisting in her stomach; a feeling of raging desire and longing, a fiery hand reaching towards Wendy.

Sooyoung didn’t focus on the style of Wendy’s dress, or how her hair and makeup was done, but rather on the girl herself - Sooyoung could care less how Wendy looked; she looked beautiful in everything to her.

The officiant began to speak, a speech that seemed to drone on a little too long for the girls. Yerim became nervous and antsy, as if it were her own wedding; Joohyun became worried about not only Yerim, but Sooyoung as well, and paid little attention to the ceremony, focusing on comforting and reassuring both of them; Sooyoung became transfixed on Wendy, whose gaze never drifted from the other woman, just as how Sooyoung’s gaze never drifted from Wendy.

“May I ask that the parents of Wendy and Seulgi please rise.” the officiant said, and Wendy’s parents rose, and so did Seulgi’s mother. The officiant talked a little bit longer, and every break or so their parents recited a “We do,” and then the officiant asked them to be seated.

The officiant talked longer, and joined both Seulgi and Wendy’s hands.

And then the words Sooyoung was so desperately waiting for floated into the air-

“Speak now, or forever hold your peace.”

Joohyun didn’t try and stop her. She didn’t hold onto her leg, preventing her from standing, try to talk her out of it prior, or grab her arm and pull her back down.

“I object.” Sooyoung declared, loud and clear, and everyone there turned to face her, their expressions shocked, confused, embarrassed.

Sooyoung briefly met the glares of Seulgi and Wendy, Seulgi looking as if she was about to lunge forward and stab her; Wendy’s expression nearly unreadable, a mix of disappointment and relief.

The officiant fumbled around for a moment, his mouth repeatedly opening and closing, as if he was speaking, but no words came out. He shuffled through the cue cards in his hands, looking for a way to save the ceremony and this already destined to burn wedding.

Seulgi opened to speak, likely to threaten Sooyoung, kick her out, but was interrupted by another person, across the aisle in the back, standing.

“I object as well!” Min Yoongi exclaimed, and Wendy’s expression changed to one of shock and fear as Seulgi turned harshly towards her.

“How did you get in here?” Seulgi hissed, turning to face Yoongi.

“I let him in,” Yerim said softly, keeping her gaze to the ground as she stood, Joohyun being the only barrier between her and Sooyoung. “I object, too.”

“Yerim.” Seulgi’s harsh tone softened, but her warning still laced her tongue.

“I also object!” Joohyun said suddenly, also standing.

The officiant panicked more, dropping his cue cards as the wind picked up, whisking them away.

“We’ll continue,” Seulgi said sternly, facing Wendy yet again. “We agreed we needed five liable objections to stop the wedding. That’s four, everyone anticipated.”

“I object.”

Everyone once again turned to face the final objection - there, in the front row, stood Seulgi’s mother.

“Mom?” Seulgi demanded, unsure if she should be furious or concerned.

“Wendy,” Mrs. Kang began. “You’re a wonderful woman, please don’t get me wrong. But Seul, this wedding is far too soon after your divorce. I think you need more time. This will just end in shreds like you and Yeri-” Mrs. Kang paused, turning to face Yerim behind her. “Who I still think deserves another chance.”

Yerim smiled sadly at Mrs. Kang, who then faced the altar again.

“That’s five.” the officiant said.

“Six,” Wendy corrected, dropping Seulgi’s hands. “I...I can’t marry you, Seulgi. She was right - this is too soon. There’s people that deserve another chance-”

“Wendy, yes, I’ll totally take you back,” Yoongi answered. “We can-”

“No, not you,” Wendy replied, the slight taste of disgust on her tongue. “If anything, you just reassured the fact that I’m a lesbian,” Yoongi, who looked shocked and hurt, took his seat once again. “It’s Sooyoung who deserves another chance. I’ll let you be the deciding factor in this, Soo - despite what I’ve done to you, will you give me another chance? Let me marry you someday? Or should I continue with this and marry Seulgi?”

“I want to give you - us - another chance.” Sooyoung answered firmly, standing her ground.

Wendy reached down, tearing away at the layers of her dress, so she stood in the underneath, the smooth, white bodice, that looked like a white version of Sooyoung and Yerim’s dresses.

She came down off the altar, and Sooyoung fought her way through the row of chairs, over legs, to meet Wendy in the aisle.

Wendy took Sooyoung’s hand in hers, her grip tight.

They took off together, picking up speed, the shouts of protest and cheers quickly fading into the distance as Wendy slipped out of her shoes, letting her feet hit the harsh ground on their own, no barriers or buffers between them, just like Wendy and Sooyoung.

“I can’t believe we’re literally running away together.” Wendy huffed out, her words faint, but the laugh that followed afterwards evident.

“Where are we going?” Sooyoung asked.

“I’m not sure,” Wendy admitted. “Away.”

“I drove here, we can take my car-”

“No, no. It’s too late to turn back now.”

A few hours later, both Wendy and Sooyoung sat on spinning chairs, rotated to face one another in a dimly lit pub, the bartender sliding them each a glass of brightly coloured drinks that smelled sweet, with the twang of the bitter alcohol.

“You two are dressed fancy,” the bartender commented. “A special occasion?”

“I just ran away from my wedding.” Wendy told him.

“I objected.” Sooyoung added.

“I don’t know what I was thinking.”

There was no more waiting for Wendy to come around, realize her wrong doings and where her heart truly lied.

There was no more jealousy, longing, plotting, fear, or uncertainty.

Just their love, and their hands that laid in one another, and the words they shared between them - whether they verbally spoke, or the glances and touches exchanged that the other knew so well, being able to read each other, as if they were each other's favourite book.
