Summary: In which Jung Wheein is entranced by Kim Yongsun's voice, which she claims is one of an angel.

The thing Jung Wheein loved about the small café was the live music they played.

It was something different almost every time she went. One day it would be a small band, perhaps a pop or a jazz one. The next it would be a man alone on stage, with nothing but a guitar, and the next the artist would have an sfx board with them.

The Wednesday night Jung Wheein arrived, planning on studying for her upcoming college exams, a woman stood alone on stage up to a microphone attached to a stand.

Wheein found her stunning. Her hair was dyed a rusty pink, which perfectly framed her face and her careful makeup drew out her delicate features. She wore a thin, white dress, and Wheein found herself being concerned for her, not wanting her to be cold.

"This next song is one hopefully most of you know," the girl laughed into the microphone as Wheein sat at a booth, picking one a distance away from the girl, but still at an angle where she could look up and see her. "This is the wonderful Miss Winehouse's 'Back to Black', and I hope I can do it some justice."

She laughed again, a high pitched, hitching laugh.

Wheein saw the man near her grimace at it, and then lean over to his wife. "If she sings like she laughs, I think my ears will bleed."

Wheein thought there was something alluring about the woman's laugh- it was unique and enticing, yet authentic.

Wheein spread her books about on the table, wanting to study, when the woman began to sing.

The moment she opened , Wheein was taken aback.

Unlike her laugh, there was no way to describe the woman's voice but as that of one of an angel's.

The woman sang a few more songs, introducing each one in between. She sang Lana Del Rey's "Video Games", Taeyeon's "I", Lorde's "Liability", and a few other powerful songs, that the woman sang well. She said she had hoped to do them justice, and Wheein wasn’t sure what was above justice, but whatever it was, the girl certainly had.

By the time the woman had finished her set, Wheein hadn’t gotten any studying done, but rather a lot of ogling at the woman.

She was entranced by her, by her looks, her voice, her alluring charm. Like a sailor is drawn to a siren, a sinner to an angel. Wheein found this girl also a figure of mythical beauty, one of an angel’s; a siren’s.

“Once again, my name is Solar, and it’s been a pleasure.” she smiled, a few people applauded, and she exited the stage.

Wheein thought that Solar herself was an angel, as she thought that she had the name and voice and looks of one, so therefore she was.

Shaking all thoughts of the angel girl from her head as she exited her vision, Wheein turned back to her notes and books, wanting to be able to say she got at least a bit of studying done in the nearly an hour she’s been there.

A few moments later, Solar ended up floating near Wheein’s table. She was talking to two men in suits, and her arms were wrapped tightly around herself. Wheein soley observed, flicking her gaze back and forth between Solar and her notes.

At first, Solar looked comfortable with the men, laughing with them and making jokes of her own. They were discussing Solar’s performance, and one of the men, who Wheein assumed was the café manager, made a sly comment he and the other man found funny.

“I think you should stop singing famed singers with powerful voices. You’re doing them an injustice, and if you want to keep your slot here, I have an appropriate setlist for you.”

Wheein caught Solar’s slight but evident glare at the man, a mix of disgust and hurt. Wheein could practically hear Solar’s thoughts.

“I have an appropriate setlist for you as well, it’s got ‘Stick It’ by Mirrorish on it.” “I think you should shut your mouth and try some cologne for once.” “I’m doing them an injustice? I’d like to see your mouth do better.”

But Solar didn’t say any of that, and neither did Wheein. Solar just laughed nervously along with the men, agreeing, claiming she was eager to see the setlist and open to suggestions. Wheein just directed her gaze back down to her notes, glancing over the coloured pen and careful writing.

“Did you hear the way your voice cracked during ‘I’?” the second man asked. Wheein wasn’t sure who he was, but he seemed more familiar with Solar than the café manager. He stood closer to her, and he leaned back, his arm clutching the top of the chair across from Wheein.

Again, Wheein tried to turn back to her studying, but was again distracted when she could see, from the corner of her eye, the man move his arm from around the chair to around Solar’s waist. She could see her tense up, try and move away, but the man followed.

She could see Solar’s body language basically scream out for help, wanting to run away.

As if she was still entranced by her, like sailors drawn to a siren, like sinners drawn to an angel, Wheein stood up abruptly, her chair making a loud screech sound as she drew back.

She circled around her table, approaching Solar and the two men. As she grabbed Solar’s wrist, she felt the three pairs of eyes turn to her.

“You’re Solar, right?” Wheein asked, and Solar nodded, an expression of uncertainty yet underlying gratitude etched across her face. “You did so well! It was so amazing, I couldn’t even focus on my studying. Say, why don’t you let me buy you something? You must be hungry; how about a cookie? Any allergies?”

Wheein pulled her past and away from the men, sticking the two of them in line together.

“Thank you.” Solar whispered.

“No problem.”

“Was it that obvious?”

“What was obvious?”

“That he was a creep.”

“A bit. But seriously, you were amazing. Want a cookie?”

“Sure.”

Wheein turned to face the counter, ordering two cookies for the both of them.

“I’m sorry, ma’am.” the man at the counter said. “It’s late and we’re not baking anymore cookies. May I offer you a slice of angel’s food cake instead?”

“Sure.”

The two girls were soon handed their slices, and made way for another booth in the back of the café, even further away from the men.

They still stood there, guarding Wheein’s table. They weren’t done picking Solar apart, weren’t done offering her sly comments, and knew Wheein had to come back for her things.

“Have I told you you were amazing?” Wheein repeated in between bites of cake. “The voice of an angel.”

Solar laughed. “Is Solar a fitting name for an angel?”

“Very.”

“Good. That’s what I was going for. My real name is Kim Yongsun, and my friend suggested I use Solar as a name. Like, sun and Solar.”

“I think that’s very clever.”

The two girls conversed a little longer over their slices of cake. Solar asked Wheein what she was studying, Solar talked about how long she had been singing; the fact that she only stayed at this venue was because they paid her far better than any other.

“Do you want to leave now?” Wheein asked when they were both finished and the conversation had begun to lull. “You seem tired. I’m sure you are.”

Solar laughed, bowing her head. “Is it that obvious?”

Wheein skipped the pleasantries, and nodded. “Of course.”

This made Solar laugh again, and they stood up. “I’m parked out back.” Solar told her.

“I’ll walk you. I walked here, anyways.”

The two girls made their way out the back, and it wasn’t until they stood outside Solar’s car, her hand on the door handle, did Solar remember.

“Your notes.” she said softly.

“Don’t worry about them. I have them backed up onto my laptop, anyways.”

“Your other things?”

Wheein waved her off. “There was nothing. Just my notes.”

“That’s good, I guess.”

The girls stood in silence a moment, and then Solar opened her car door.

“Can I drive you back?” Solar asked.

Wheein shook her head. “I can walk, but thank you.”

“Oh, okay.” Another beat of silence, and Solar lowered herself into the driver's’ seat, leaving the door open. “Hey, listen. I, uh, will be back here again this time next week and I’d really like to see you there again. Obviously you don’t have to, but…”

“No, I’ll be there.” Wheein smiled, and Solar, who focused on the pavement under her feet, finally met her gaze, giving her a small smile back before swinging her legs into the car.

Wheein was true to her word, and showed up at the café the next week at the same time, sliding into the same booth.

As expected, her notes were long gone, swept into some recycle bin and crushed in a compactor.

The same angelic siren of a woman sat on stage, perched upon a stool and a small electronic piano her.

She had ditched the white dress for a light sweater and some jeans, an outfit that better suited the new atmosphere of the new genre Solar was breaking out onto.

As she sang, keys gently, Wheein leaned back in the booth, twirling the stir stick around her paper cup.

Like an angel parting the heaven’s, Solar’s soft lips parted words, washing over Wheein like waves do a siren’s shore.

“This next one is for a very special girl,” Solar said into the mic, glancing sideways and giving Wheein a sly smile as their sights met. “This is Tegan and Sara’s ‘100x’. Enjoy.”

She did.

She enjoyed the soft keystrokes, the softness of Solar’s voice, the sense of serenity Wheein felt as the words left Solar’s angelic lips.

Solar went on to perform a few more, accompanying herself on the piano, and Wheein went on to finish her coffee.

As soon as Solar finished, stepping off of the stage, Wheein rushed to her, wrapping her arms around her abruptly without thinking.

“How is it possible you did even better than before? You did amazingly, my angel.”

Solar laughed, returning Wheein’s gesture and holding her tightly. “Thank you.”

Subconsciously, Wheein didn’t give Solar’s managers a chance to talk to her, tear her down, and she stuck to Solar’s side the entire night.

By the end of it, Wheein found herself sitting in the passenger's seat of Solar’s car, parked in the same spot as before, mindlessly relating some story to her that she found funny.

“You know what’s funny?” Solar interrupted.

“What?”

“I feel like I’ve known you forever, but I don’t even know your name.”

Wheein leaned over, placing her head in Solar’s lap so she laid straight across. “Have I really not told you my name?”

“I think we were both caught up in different things.” Solar murmured, running her hand through Wheein’s hair.

“That’s true. My name is Jung Wheein.”

“A pretty name for a pretty girl.”

“I think both Solar and Yongsun are angelic names for a girl with a voice like one.”

Solar laughed, her fingers still tangled in the other girl’s hair. “I was a little embarrassed to ask because I felt like I should have known that already.”

“Don’t worry. It was rude of me not to tell you.”

“Can I ask you another question?”

“Of course.”

“Can I kiss you?”

This made Wheein’s heart not only skip a beat, but start pumping so hard afterwards Wheein figured it was bound to pound right out of her chest.

Wheein found herself now, more than before, consciously wanting Yongsun’s pretty lips do pretty things to her own mouth and say pretty things to her, like the pretty words she sang.

“Of course.”

Wheein sat up, and Yongsun pressed her pretty lips against Wheein’s.

Until now, Wheein had never met an angel, nor kissed one. But if she had, she would be sure that this is what it would taste like.

Half of an angel’s food cake and a dash of a fruit flavoured mint.
