Chapter 11

A Spot of Dither

A/N: Hello again~ I'm glad I could make an update again today ^^ I think after this chapter I will make one more and then maybe make an epilogue or something. So sadly, this story will eventually come to an end. I hope everybody is liking it so far. Also, I was too lazy again to check over on the grammar and stuff, so I'm sorry about that. Thank you for reading!!~

As Mingyu placed their order at Wonwoo’s favourite burger place, Wonwoo occupied himself by making a little tower out of the salt and pepper shakers. He was interrupted as Mingyu approached the table, placing the tray of food onto the small table.

‘Truthfully, this is probably the most unromantic dinner date I’ve ever been on’ Wonwoo pointed out ‘I thought this was supposed to be a romantic Valentine’s Day dinner’

Mingyu grinned, unwrapping a cheeseburger before handing it to Wonwoo.

‘This is your favourite place to eat, so of course I would bring you here’ Mingyu said, starting to unwrap his own burger ‘And I know how much you like to be comfortable’

‘You’re making me sound like some old man, set in his ways, who only goes to this one same diner to eat his meals’ Wonwoo rolled his eyes, taking a decent sized bite of his burger.

‘Well, I’m not saying that you aren’t’ Mingyu pointed out, teasing Wonwoo with a brilliant smile.

‘Are you serious? I’m the definition of adventurous’ Wonwoo argued, not waiting to swallow his food ‘If I wasn’t so set in my ways, would I have done this whole Valentine’s Day thing with you?’

‘You should finish your food before you speak’ Mingyu nagged, mimicking Wonwoo.

‘Real nice Mingyu’ Wonwoo said ‘At least something I’ve said has stuck with you’

Mingyu grinned, leaning over to steal a sip of Wonwoo’s soda.

‘Can’t you drink your own soda? I need something to wash this taste from my mouth’ Wonwoo questioned, leaning over to grab Mingyu’s soda before drinking almost half of it.

‘That cheeseburger was so disgusting. Is it really that hard to piece together a decent cheeseburger these days?’ Wonwoo complained, setting the soda back down ‘I didn’t think it was possible to make a bad cheeseburger, but I stand corrected’

‘Are you sure? Mine is fine’ Mingyu questioned, taking another bite of his beef burger ‘And does it matter that much? It’s just a cheese burger; I can buy you another one’

Wonwoo almost looked offended, standing up from his position at the table.

‘Cheeseburger is life’ Wonwoo said, sounding like it was the most obvious thing in the world.

‘I thought that I was your life’ Mingyu said, looking like an injured puppy.

‘Don’t get so offended’ Wonwoo joked, patting Mingyu on the shoulder ‘You’re also my life. My life consists of cheeseburger, books, Mingyu, and sleeping’

Mingyu looked up at Wonwoo, who was standing, with a look of awe.

‘Now I’m going to the bathroom, I’ll be right back’

Mingyu nodded, smiling to himself. As Wonwoo disappeared into the men’s bathroom, he returned to the counter to deal with the ‘disgusting’ cheeseburger.

As Wonwoo entered the restroom, he couldn’t help but think that he shouldn’t have downed such a large amount of soda. After he had done his business, he approached the sink to wash his hands. As he looked up into the mirror, his eyes widened to the point he thought they would explode.

In the stall next to the one he had just been occupying, stood Liu Yifei. She wore a tight dress with a slit up the side of her leg, and on her face there was an expression that Wonwoo found difficult to read.

‘W-What are you doing here?’ Wonwoo questioned.

He cursed his voice for wavering at a time like this. Liu Yifei just smirked, emerging from the restroom stall.

‘Isn’t it obvious Jeon Wonwoo?’ she asked slyly ‘You have something that I want’

‘If Mingyu is what you want, you’re definitely not getting him’ Wonwoo said, trying to sound stronger.

Liu Yifei made her way over to where Wonwoo stood, her heels clicking against the tiled floor.

‘Who’s going to stop me? You?’ she laughed to herself but it came out bitter.

Bitter just like her, Wonwoo thought to himself.

Wonwoo didn’t reply to her; he just wanted to get out of this situation.

‘Look’ Wonwoo started ‘I’m just going to leave, okay? And you can go back to China and leave us alone. Mingyu wants to stay here, so why can’t you respect his decision?’

‘How would you know what Mingyu wants? You’ve only known him for a month. You don’t know him like I do’ Yifei said, trying not to shout and attract unnecessary attention.

‘Because I love him’ Wonwoo answered ‘And he loves me. Now just let me leave, okay?’

Wonwoo turned away, heading towards the bathroom door.

‘I don’t think you’ll be getting far’ Liu Yifei commented, inspecting her chipped fingernails.

Wonwoo turned back to face her, an unsettling feeling overcoming his stomach.

‘You won’t be going anywhere anytime soon. That’s what I’m trying to say’ she shrugged ‘Not after I slipped something into your precious little cheeseburger’

‘W-What are you trying to say? You drugged me?’ Wonwoo questioned, squeezing his eyes shut as the unsettling feeling became a stabbing pain in his stomach.

‘Precisely’ Liu Yifei blinked innocently as she watched Wonwoo latch onto the sink for support.

‘W-What did I ever do to you?’ Wonwoo managed to breath out, as he groaned in immense pain.

‘I already told you’ Liu Yifei said, beginning to file her nails ‘You have something I want, and I’m not going to let you get into my way’

Wonwoo felt an overwhelming sensation, his vision becoming blurry.

‘M-Mingyu’ he called out, hoping he would hear and come to his rescue. But he didn’t.

Wonwoo felt his entire world turn into blackness as he felt his head thump against the cold tiled floor.

Wonwoo had no idea how long he had been unconscious, nor did he know where he was. As he became more aware of his own senses, he could feel the cold night air brushing against his skin, and he could hear the distant noise of bustling traffic.

As he finally gained the strength to open his eyes, he realised that he was on a roof top. He shuddered at the thought of Liu Yifei and wondered whether she was around.

‘You’re finally awake’ an unsympathetic voice spoke through the sound of wind and traffic.

Wonwoo turned his head, coming face to face with the girl in question.

‘W-Why did you bring me here?’ Wonwoo’s voice was unsteady and coarse from being unconscious for an undetermined amount of time.

‘How many times do I have to tell you? Do you not listen at all?’ she mocked, handling Wonwoo by the scruff of his neck ‘You have something that is mine; so I’m getting rid of you’

Wonwoo struggled to get out of her grasp, his limbs flailing in an attempt to escape. Either Liu Yifei was surprisingly strong or he was just plain weak. She manoeuvred her hands so that they were now pinning Wonwoo down by arms.

‘If you don’t struggle this could be over and done with’ she grimaced, flinching as Wonwoo managed to kick her in the leg.

‘Just let me go!’ Wonwoo shouted ‘You don’t have to go this far’

‘Will you leave Mingyu if I let you go?’ she asked, not once loosening her grip.

Wonwoo shook his head.

‘I can’t leave Mingyu’ his voice broke, accepting defeat.

Liu Yifei forced Wonwoo into a standing position, dragging him across the roof. Wonwoo struggled, trying to let himself free; he was too weak, and he was still light-headed from the drug she had slipped into his food.

‘Finally you’ll be out of the way’ Liu Yifei spat ‘And Mingyu can finally be with me’

Wonwoo shut his eyes tight, trying not to look down as he was pushed to the edge of the building.

‘I-I’m sorry, please d-don’t’ Wonwoo begged, tears trickling down his cheeks as his knees became weak.

Wonwoo was more than frightened at this point; he definitely didn’t want to die.

‘You shouldn’t have thought about this before you started to fall for Kim Mingyu’ she shouted in anger ‘You don’t know how painful it was to watch him care for you more than he cared for me’

‘I-I’m sorry’ Wonwoo apologised profusely, tears not stopping.

‘It’s too late to apologise now’ she said coldly, sounding distant.

She pushed Wonwoo with all of her strength and Wonwoo could feel his foot slipping as he tried to maintain his stance. As Wonwoo’s adrenaline began to kick in, he managed to jab Yifei in the stomach with his elbow as hard as he possibly could.

Liu Yifei lost her balance for a second, stumbling back onto the roof top. Wonwoo took this chance to make a wild dash for the door, tripping over his shoe lace on the way. He landed flat on his face, grazing it on the harsh cement.

‘Nice try’ she said, her footsteps could be heard making their way closer to Wonwoo with each second.

Wonwoo quickly grabbed hold of a nearby shovel, getting onto his feet while holding it up over his shoulder.

‘I-I won’t hesitate to hit you’ Wonwoo said, sounding out of breath.

‘This…’ Liu Yifei trailed off ‘I give up. This is too hard. Why are you so difficult to get rid of?’

Wonwoo hesitated, deciding not to put down the shovel.

‘What are you talking about?’ he interrogated.

Yifei let out a long sigh, turning around and walking over to the edge of the roof top.

‘Maybe it would be easier to get rid of myself?’ she questioned, sounding dangerously serious.

Wonwoo dropped the shovel, slowly inching forward to where she stood.

‘Take care of Mingyu, will you?’ she asked, sounding emotionless.

‘W-What are you saying?’ Wonwoo asked, now standing less than a foot away from her.

‘It doesn’t matter anymore’ she replied, one of her feet slipping over the edge.

‘Wait, don’t do that’ Wonwoo shouted.

Acting on an instinct that he didn’t know he had in him, Wonwoo grabbed Liu Yifei by the waist, pulling her back down onto the roof top right before she had thrown herself over the edge.

‘What are you doing?! Are you crazy’ Wonwoo shouted ‘I mean, I know you’re crazy but don’t do that to yourself’

Wonwoo was hysterical, he didn’t know what to think about this girl anymore. The only thing he knew was that she didn’t deserve to die; she had a whole life ahead of her.

Liu Yifei broke down into messy sobs, using Wonwoo’s shoulder to cry on.

Despite everything she had tried to do to make Wonwoo’s life miserable, Wonwoo couldn’t help but pity the girl. Although he couldn’t understand why she had done everything that she did, Wonwoo couldn’t stand by and watch her throw away her life like that. What Mingyu had told her about starting a new life in China had been right, and Wonwoo wished she would have listened.

‘I-I’m going to call emergency services. Is that okay?’ Wonwoo attempted to ask her.

‘J-Just do whatever you want, I don’t care’ she replied through her tears, still attempting to sound cold ‘Just have me taken away and locked up’

After about ten minutes, the ambulance and police had arrived and emerged through the door on the roof top.

‘What seems to be the situation here?’ a police officer interrogated, approaching the two of them.

‘I um…’ Wonwoo trailed off, thinking about what to say ‘She… she was trying to commit suicide. I’m just the one who stopped her’

‘Is there anyone hurt?’ an ambulance employee asked, noticing the injuries covering Wonwoo’s face and body.

‘Y-Yeah, I think I injured myself quite a bit while trying to get her down’ Wonwoo lied ‘I think she needs some help with her mental state though’

‘We can give you a quick check-up here if you like’ the ambulance guy suggested ‘And I can get some of our other staff to take her to see a counsellor immediately’

‘That sounds good’ Wonwoo agreed, helping Liu Yifei to stand.

Yifei stared up at Wonwoo with an expression he had never seen her give before. Was that gratitude he could see?

‘Take this back’ she said, rubbing the tears away from her eyes.

‘My phone?’ Wonwoo asked, taking his old mobile back.

‘I’m sorry’ she whispered, not looking into Wonwoo’s eyes before she was taken over to the other side of the roof top to speak with a counsellor and another boy who Wonwoo did not know.

Wonwoo’s physical state was examined by the ambulance employee.

‘You seem to have a few bruises and grazes, but it doesn’t seem like anything life threatening’ he commented.

Wonwoo let out a breath he hadn’t known that he had been holding. He was glad the ambulance guy hadn’t examined him more thoroughly and found out he had been drugged. Wonwoo shuddered at the thought of being drugged by Liu Yifei; he hoped that he wasn’t going to regret not informing the police about what she did.

After he had received his check-up, Wonwoo made his way over to the wall next to the door, taking a seat and trying to calm himself down from the intense situation he had just been in.

‘Jeon Wonwoo?’ a heavy accented, unfamiliar voice asked.

Wonwoo looked up, it was the boy who had been standing with Liu Yifei moments ago.

When Wonwoo didn’t reply the boy laughed nervously.

‘I um… I have a feeling you held back some of the truth. I know my sister well, so I have a feeling she did more than try to commit suicide. She’s been saying weird things about getting rid of someone called Jeon Wonwoo for a couple of weeks now and… I guess I am saying thank you for covering for her’ he finally said, pausing often to think of the correct words.

‘She was so frightening, I thought I was going to die tonight. I really did’ Wonwoo said back ‘But then all of a sudden she broke…’

‘I apologise for everything she has caused you. She’s been hung up on this Mingyu kid for years; I just never thought she would go this far. Sometimes it’s hard for me to believe we’re related; she has just caused me so much trouble over the years’ he continued ‘If there is anything you need, don’t hesitate to call me’

The boy gave Wonwoo his number, looking guilty.

‘I will do anything to repay you for what my sister has done. I’m Wen Junhui, by the way. But if that’s too difficult to say, you can call me Jun’

Wonwoo smiled and nodded, pocketing the phone number.

‘I will be taking her back to China early tomorrow morning. I’ve booked her into a really great counsellor back home. Hopefully she will be out of your hair in no time’

‘Thank you’ Wonwoo smiled ‘I guess I should probably call my boyfriend then. He’ll probably be freaking out’

‘Speaking of boyfriends, I can’t wait to see mine for the first time in six years. Long distance relationships can be hard sometimes, but if you are in love with Mingyu the way that I am in love with Minghao, even distance won’t be able to separate you’ Junhui said, his expression lighting up when he mentioned his boyfriend’s name ‘Sometimes I wish my younger sister knew what it felt like to truly love somebody. Then she wouldn’t have been so crazy and possessive about Mingyu’

‘I’m sure she will eventually find somebody’ Wonwoo suggested.

‘Now I know why Mingyu likes you so much’ Jun complimented, with a flip to his hair ‘Too bad you aren’t as good looking as me though’

Wonwoo laughed at Junhui’s joke. This guy had a good sense of humour despite the current situation. Once he had left, Wonwoo took out the phone that Liu Yifei had returned to him.

As Wonwoo dialled in Mingyu’s number, he silently hoped and prayed he would pick up despite his number being blocked.

After only one ring, somebody had picked up on the other line.

‘Liu Yifei?! Where is Wonwoo? What have you done with him?’ Mingyu’s voice shouted in a mixture of emotions.

‘Mingyu’ Wonwoo simply said, causing Mingyu to stop panicking.

‘Wonwoo? What’s happening?’ Mingyu asked, worried about the older boy.

‘I… I’ll tell you about it later’ Wonwoo said, looking around him ‘Long story short, Yifei attempted suicide and I managed to get her down from the building’

There was a short silence before the sound of Mingyu opening the door to his car was heard.

‘I-I’ve been looking for you all night Wonwoo’ he said ‘Just tell me where you are and I’ll come get you’

‘Well aren’t you a good boyfriend’ Wonwoo said, chuckling to himself.

‘Y-You just called me your boyfriend’ Mingyu said; Wonwoo could almost hear the grin the other boy’s voice.

‘I guess I did’ Wonwoo said with a small smile.
