‘What?’

You blink up at the man, noticing the familiarity of those dark irises of his, their steely hues gazing down at you fondly. His hold on you isn’t harmful, it’s rather gentle and stirs something within you that you can’t put your finger on — but it’s nothing bad you suppose.

Letting your panic lax, you realize the similarity of his features to the man from your memories. Jeon Jungkook.. right? That was his name right?

“It’s been so long since I last saw you (y/n)!”

His eyes are doe, big and wide, much like a deer’s as he looks you over in surprised glee. Happiness is written all over his expression as the man hugs you close to his body without pause to hear your reply.

Frozen and not used to this kind of display of affection when all you’ve got for the past few months were insults from Jimin and affectionate jokes from Taehyung, you’re not sure what to do in this situation. Glancing over at your two companions, Taehyung looks on with concern but unsure how to in while Jimin’s glaring at the ground.

“(Y/n)?” the male questions. He blinks innocently and tilts his head in question of your unresponsive behavior, but you don’t know how to put it politely that you have no idea who the heck he is other than his name and possibly the idea that he might’ve been a past love interest.

The brunette must’ve sensed your anxiety and stepped in to save you. Taehyung’s comforting hand press against your shoulder to push you slightly towards his and Jimin’s direction as he eyes the dark haired man with a scrutinizing gaze. The look is sharp but his smile is soft and inviting, it’s radiant in stark comparison to the suspicious glint you notice in his chocolate gaze.

“I apologize to step in so rudely, but do you know her?”

The other seems taken aback, looking towards you — probably expecting you to speak up but you don’t and he’s quite surprised by this. “Yeah, she’s my best friend, what’s it to you?” His eyebrow is cocked and challenging whatever the detective has to say next.

“Are you aware then that your best friend had recently been involved in a rather harmful accident that resulted in amnesia,” he presses, “She has no idea who you are, and must be rather shaken up by your sudden touchiness.”

You wince, you’ve never heard Tae with a malicious bite in his tone like that. When had he gotten so protective of you like that? It’s true he must’ve noticed how uncomfortable you were sandwiched in Jungkook’s affectionate hug, but how is it possible he sounded both rude but still polite at the same time?

The other puts his hands up in defense, “Take it easy man, I had no idea. I haven’t been around for a year or so to travel and study abroad, I haven’t been able to keep contact when I’ve been so busy juggling studying and working.”

He perks up and slips out his phone, tapping and sliding until he brandishes the device in front of you three to show the displayed picture. Sure enough, it’s him and you, both grinning foolishly in that familiar room your memories have taken you to.

“I know you probably can’t trust anyone in the state you’re in, and I’m sorry I couldn’t be there when you were in the hospital… It truly must have been scary…” he trails off meekly, hand scratching the back of his head humbly, “But I want you to know that I’m here now and can help you regain the memories you’ve lost. Just let me know—“

“Thanks, but I think we’re better off with her for now,” Jimin cuts in suddenly to your surprise, slipping a finger through the belt loops of your jeans and tugging you in the direction of the car park.

“W-wait Jimin.. What the—“ you sputter, trying to halt but weak against his strong tugs.

What was happening?

You’re confused, letting yourself to be led away as you ponder over their odd behavior. Didn’t Jimin from the start oppose your staying with them, much less helping you at all? Glancing back at the supposed Jungkook from your memories, he lurches forward to wrap his fingers around your wrist. In the split second he’s got, he quickly whispers into your ear, “Please, if you want to talk at all, I’m here, we can meet up at the old coffee shop by the river where we usually hung out. Show up or not, I’ll be there!”

Letting go, he backs away while waving you off, holding his hands up in defeat when the orange-haired officer shoots him a menacing look.

Should you go, you wonder on the way home. Was this worth anything? He’s already shown you picture proof of his connection to you. What was there to doubt? Can you trust him?

“I don’t trust that guy,” Jimin grunts once you three arrive home. His feet lead the way as he stares down at his phone, rapidly typing a message to Yoongi to investigate any files on the character Jeon Jungkook.

Taehyung nudges you with a smile as Jimin stalks to his room, “Don’t let his attitude get to you, but I’m sure you already know that..”

“He may not seem like it, but him and I both know you’re bound to leave us sooner or later, and I think it’s finally hit him that your time might be up soon now that we’ve found your man.”

His smile is sad at that thought, and you know you must be mirroring the same expression, having gotten close to the two and the other detectives at the precinct. For a while it’s been tugging at your mind that you were not a part of their lives, and only an assignment that they will one day complete — and now it is sooner becoming reality.
