Searching For Avalon

The dark corridor’s vacancy was disrupted as soon as the gasp echoed across, leaving nothing but the remnants of a story untold, a task to complete, an imminent tragedy.

Suddenly a shadow appeared, the dim light that was falling through an unknown medium tracing his movements, his frantic steps, his anxious eyes. The man’s form was now clear for view, his obese, apathetic figure not being able to restrict or help him. He could run, he could run faster, he could probably find help…

Behind him another shadow appeared, and this was one more ominuous. A cry of fright, sounding like the last yelp of a dog before being crushed on the road. The new mas younger, fitter, the tattoos on the nape of his neck running down his arm making his appearance seem even more dangerous. The older man gulped and continued running, a light of hope emanating from the distant turn at the end. The younger man strolled to the one who was running away, almost as if he was waiting for the Fates to throw his prey back at him.

The older man got out on a snakey underpass, narrow and humid. But it was an escape nonethless and when he found a tall woman standing next to the pillar, he knew he had found his rescue.

“MA’AM!” the man shouted. The woman slowly turned around, removing her earphones and facing the man in the process. The man’s eyes widened in relief and he opened his mouth to say something when suddenly, the woman smiled.

“You’re finally here?” she whispered. She lifted her hands, shooting a glance at her cuticles and then sighing.

“Don’t make it too messy Jay,” she said in a louder voice. The older man’s face paled as he sensed the presence of his predator behind him.

“Wh-wh-who are you??” the man shouted. He knew his time was here. But for what reason? He had been a devoted official, following the orders of the General with extreme sincerity and even letting go of an opportunity to have his own family, incase the latter become a disturbance.

The woman narrowed her eyes, taking small but graceful strides towards the confused fellow. Her boots made her tower over him and as the man called Jay approached the two, the woman placed her finger on her chin.

“Hmm.. now how should we do this..”

The sound of a crack and suddenly, the man fell on the floor. The woman slapped her accomplice on his arms, the irritation on her face ruining her calm demeanour.

“Stop trying to act all Snow Queen everytime we step out,” Jay said, clicking his tongue and stretching his arms. “All you have to do is snap their necks or if in a struggle, stab them and get it over with. You go around playing like that—”

“But it’s fun to play around!” the woman, who now suddenly looked like a young girl, complained.

Jay shook his head. He looked down at his watch then nodded, signalling the woman to leave with him. “I promise you Jiyeon, we’ll get more play. Let’s first get out of this hole.”

“This pretty little hole,” Jiyeon improvised, sneaking a glance at the dead man’s expensive suit and the image of the sunrise reflecting off the glass skyscrapers. Her phone vibrated and as she and her partner walked back into the dark tunnel, their way home, her voice bounced off in the silence.

“Yeah we did it. Hmm. It was quite a chase, surprisingly… but it was fun. Yeah. We’ll be back in another forty-five minutes. Cut.”

                                                                            ********************************************

“AGAIN!”

Kairi heaved a huge sigh and bent over, clutching her stomach as she desperately shook her head.

“Plea..please.. my.. stamina…”

“…needs to  be increased!” Sooyoung roared. Kairi her lips and took a deep breath. As soon as the teacher saw her student ready, she started counting again.

“You planning on killing her before the attack?” Sungyeol muttered to Woohyun, the two standing at a distant and observing their new recruit. Woohyun’s eyes were glazed over, refusing to let out any emotion.

“The famous silence…” Sungyeol murmured.

“She needs to be strong.” Woohyun faced his friend and continued. “All these tough moments, she’ll think about it deeply. She’ll think about why she’s doing this, what for, who and slowly, her sub-conscious will make her realize that she is doing the right thing.”

“But she’s already made the choice,” Sungyeol said. Woohyun blinked at him then looked down at the ground.

“That’s not enough,” Woohyun whispered. “She doesn’t know what we went through. She’ll never know.”

“Now that you put it like that…I guess we need something as leverage, right? Something to…”

“Light the fire?” Woohyun completed. Sungyeol’s expression became serious and he gave a rigid nod. Woohyun pursed his lips and walked away.

“That’s a yes,” Sungyeol muttered to himself and giving the tired girl one last look, went back inside his tent.

This fic is just plain genius. I thoroughly enjoyed it through and through.
The plotline was so engaging and I think the ending was pretty satisfying and bittersweet. Altogether, your story left me breathless. I'm so glad you decided to continue writing this story even though your mom thought it was morbid. Your writing is amazing.
Your story is the first one I've commented on, upvoted, and subscribed to all at once in such a long time. I'm usually a silent reader that just reads... kudos to you. I'll prowl your profile or something later to search for more stories by you.
Thank you for writing such an amazing story. It's a shame I didn't discover it sooner.

Chapter 78: I felt like you just punched me in the face and cried together with me after reading that last paragraph. I know this isn't real but it hurts so bad. You are one amazing writer.

Chapter 78: Awww~! I realized I was 5 chapters away from the ending when I stopped. Huhu! I should have checked this out as soon as it was completed. I literally cried. SOB! So many people died. I'm glad the remaining members of the revolt are able to recover from the trauma and lead a normal life. Woohyun... huhu! (My heart breaks for you. T^T) The world thought him to be dead. He might as well be that considering that Kairi died. At least he has Kai to take care of him. T-T

Chapter 78: I can't believe i have to cry in the end.. This is so sad.. I thought it was okay at first when they both died.. -i know it sounds so off but well that's what i think- but the last part was so bad like really really bad when you make woohyun listen to the radio about himself and Kairi.. I can't stop from the heartache..
