Can I Be Sure That This Is Love?

Description

When they first saw her, it was instant attraction that couldn't be explained- she was unique, and very different from the other girls they've met. In all of Min Nana's life, she had shy away from the attention she's afraid of. Then unexpectedly, she meets the SHINee boys on an ordinary dinner party held by her father. What will happen when a soon-to-be tragedy befalls upon her? She had always thought that they were gentlemen, unaware of the growing infatuation they were secretly harboring over her...

Foreword

I'm sorry that things will be a little slow in the beginning. I want to expose the characters little by little during the start. It'll take about three chapters, then the drama starts ^v^

Drip…drip…drip…

The skies of blue that finally turned grey poured a few droplets of rain after a long and hot day. My stiff back gave in as I stretched over the study chair. The last page of the book was flipped and I sigh while looking at the front cover again, thinking that I’m going to miss the two love struck protagonist. The reason I sigh? The novel ended in a tragedy. Reading about deaths brings my mood down, like Romeo and Juliet.

Though, I didn’t really enjoy Romeo and Juliet. It wasn’t just because that I didn’t like how the plot ended, but that how a relationship can seem so…how would I put it? Unrealistic? I mean Romeo was so infatuated with Rosaline in the beginning, then after falling for young Juliet at first sight without even remembering the reason he attended Capulet’s ball. The ‘love’ he felt for poor Rosaline was so shallow that it didn’t deserved to be called ‘love’. Love at first sight, do I believe it?

I don’t know, and I don’t think so. But I do care, or in this sense, feel a deep affection of ‘love’ for my deceased mother, my old father, my jovial tutor, my nagging nanny, and my strict butler.

Sigh…

What is ‘love’? I had read many love fictions, but I still cannot grasp the meaning of that phrase. I want to feel what princesses in fairy tales felt when their princes came to claim them. ‘Love is a feeling that brings unlimited happiness’, or so that I’ve always read about. Wondering about it only conjures up more questions than answers. Such pure feelings, do they really exist in the world?

Putting that issue on hold, I quickly pick up the house phone and dialed a number. The receiver on the other end of the line picked up in less than five seconds. I can hear her panting frantically. I chuckled and look at the little alarm clock at my bedside table. It’s about 3:05p.m. She must have just finished buying groceries from the supermarket.

“Hello, Taehee-seonsaengnim? This is Nana here.” I greeted.

“Oh, Nana-yah! I just came back from grocery shopping. Guess what? There was this imported cheese on promotion today! I’m going to use the barbeque-flavored one to make macaronis tomorrow! For you and me, okay?” she exclaimed. I laughed silently on the bed. Teacher’s always been proud of her cooking skills, and being able to get things at extremely low prices.

“Anyways Nana, what’s the reason for you calling me?”

“I already finished the book seonsaengnim recommended. Is there another title that I can read? I’m out of books to read.” I asked politely, getting the paper and pencil ready to jot down whatever she was going to say.

“Something like Romeo and Juliet?” she answered while ruffling through plastic bags. I was going to frown on the other line when she said “Don’t worry, I know you didn’t like it. I know just the right book for you.”

“Yes?”

“Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen.”

“Oh, okay! Thank you very much seonsaengnim!” I replied with a high tone. Yes! I smell a story with a lot of conflicts and dilemmas in it, a new book that I can indulge myself in tonight. I can’t wait.

“Bye Nana. I’ll see you later. And remember, it’s unnie! Not seonsaengnim!”

I rushed out the room with an oversized brown cardigan on. I wanted to go to the musky old bookstore located just in the corner of a quiet road in town. The shopkeeper haraboji is always so kind and nice. Sometimes, he would invite me for tea when I’m lingering around in the empty shop. He says he enjoys my company. Having mother’s cardigan wrapped around me felt like she was with me, warming me up on a rainy day. Mother was the one who encouraged my reading starting from when I was about five years old. I miss her sometimes, but I knew that she would have wanted me to fill my live with wonderful stories.

My own story, perhaps.
