Amber had her headphones placed on her ears as if she was listening to music, but she wasn't. The headphones were merely just an accessory, it helped to cover up that she was deaf. 

Being deaf meant being handicapped, and people pity you for that. Amber hated seeing people pity her for her trouble of hearing. They wouldn't have even cared for her if she was just like them. It angered her.

She angrily shoved her phone into her jacket pocket, letting the wires from her headphones loose. She ruffled her ginger hair, before walking through the busy streets.

The tomboy thought it was nice. Nice that she didn't have to hear loud irritating noises, screams and shouts from people, or curses thrown around. For her, that was one benefit from being deaf.
