Chapter 14. New Student

Dark of the Moon

The classroom resounded with all the loud voices created a cacophony as every student chattered and gossiped this way and that. They stood in their cliques and girls whispered to each other as boys rough housed around the room.

It was all too easy to tune out as it happened every morning right before the bell rang. Haeri sat in her usual seat in the front by the window, watching the people move about outside. She kept to herself and kept quiet for the most part, avoiding eye contact with JongUp as much as possible even though she could feel his eyes on her at times. He kept to himself in the back corner of the room

The girls especially glared at Haeri in the corner and drooled over JongUp on the side. The guys stared at Haeri, casting side glances as she stared off into space, ignoring everyone as usual. They shoved each other, teasing over what they each liked about that girl.

The class settled down in their seats as soon as the bell rang, rushing to sit before the teacher walked in. The sound of chairs dragging across the floor grated on Haeri's ears. The teacher walked in and had a wide smile on his face, "Good morning." He greeted everyone.

"Good morning, Mr. Kim." The students chorused together.

"We have a new student today," Mr. Kim started, he gestured for the person to come into the classroom and he followed suit accordingly.

The tall blonde-haired boy gave a formal bow and the loud gasp of the girls had JongUp wondering what the commotion was about. He peered up and saw an unfamiliar face smiling out at the room.

“Everyone, meet Choi Junhong.” Mr. Kim said loud and clear, "He will be joining us for the rest of the school year."

Junhong bowed again to everyone in the classroom, "Hello, nice to meet you." He greeted everyone. "I hope we can all get along."

All the girls in class swooned as he smirked and gave a wink to the class. JongUp merely rolled his eyes and put his head back down.

"You can sit by JongUp in the back." Mr. Kim pointed and JongUp moved slightly so that the new kid would have some space at his desk.

Junhong lowered his head a bit and walked towards the seat he was given, he looked around the room to check out everyone's faces as well. Haeri didn't miss the satisfaction on his face when he saw hers.

She wondered what that even meant, but she couldn't think of any possibility other than, an admirer or admirer's friend just trying to help a guy out. "If you have any questions, I suggest you ask Miss Go Haeri, she tutors other students and can catch you up on the work in no time." Mr. Kim said, pointing her out to Junhong.

"Thank you, Mr. Kim. I'll be sure to let you or Haeri know if I run into any problems." Junhong said politely. And yet again, all the girls cast sidelong glances at each other in haste.

Haeri was about to have another boy wrapped around her finger yet again. They couldn't let that happen, she always managed to get everyone before they even had a chance.

If Junhong needed help in class, then he shouldn't go to Haeri. She would just steal him away as well.

Haeri was barely paying attention to everything as she noticed Junhong was a bit weird, once he sat by JongUp, his whole aura changed. She couldn't help but wonder what that meant either, boys usually had that problem with each other, but not like this.

Clearly, Junhong had some prior knowledge of JongUp for some reason. Something that caused him to be on guard when he sat next to JongUp. Was it possible that he knew about JongUp’s other life? But how was that possible, JongUp kept that separate from school.

Junhong's body was stiff and his eyes were wary as they darted around the room carefully avoiding JongUp at all costs. Haeri was more aware of these things especially after she started talking to JongUp more.

After all, no one could be trusted like JongUp said. Especially not when someone was after his weaknesses. And they knew she was one of them, that’s why he would protect her at all costs. Even she understood that.

She had to warn him, they had to talk about the new kid. He obviously had some secrets of his own. And who transfers in the middle of the year? He didn’t care about his grades enough to transfer to their school, he would lose his chances at a good college with starting in the middle of the year.

Haeri tried her best to control her paranoia in order to function and pay attention to the class. If anyone had to learn how to do the derivatives, it had to be her, since everyone else in class would want to copy her homework.

It was rather difficult to ignore her thoughts, but she could try. She noticed that the work wasn’t actually that difficult, she just needed to follow the formula in order to solve everything. She barely paid attention, just enough to grasp the concept and then her thoughts took over again.

She needed a chance to talk to JongUp, she peered out of the corner of her eye and she saw Junhong looking over at her. She sighed to herself, yes, he was definitely weird and she couldn’t explain it.

The bell rang, interrupting her thoughts, class was finally over and she had a chance to figure out a way to see him. All the girls shrieked as they gathered around Junhong, trying to talk to him.

Haeri knew their real intentions though, they were trying to block her from getting to him, or vice versa. If they crowded around him enough, leaving no way out, then he wouldn’t be able to ask Haeri for help in school.

She took that as an opportunity to leave, she quickly ran away and made it for the rooftop. Hopefully, JongUp would know that she wanted to meet him there. She took a deep breath, opening the door to the roof, holding it so it wouldn’t slam against the wall.

The classroom had started to become a suffocating turmoil of her emotions. She couldn’t deal with the people in there anymore, with her future so close, but at the same time, she couldn’t help but worry about JongUp throughout class. She was also bothered by the new student, and she didn’t really like the fact that they ignored each other still.

“I don’t trust him.” His voice said behind her and instantly, a smile crossed her face. She felt her heart stir when she turned to see his frustrated face, it was rather adorable. She shook her head at him, “I don’t like him either."

“He stares at you a lot.” JongUp said.

“He’s really tense around you.” Haeri countered. “Besides, if anything I’m more worried that your reputation precedes you with him. He seems to know, especially when I look at him while he looks at you.”

“You watch me?” JongUp said with a smirk, “Aww.. how sweet.” He cooed, throwing his arm over her shoulder in a weird side arm hug.

“Don’t flatter yourself. You already knew that.” Haeri said, struggling to break free but JongUp just pulled her closer.

“You are so silly. I already had an idea that someone would come by. I told you that school isn’t that safe, and even more so now, that Junhong is here.” JongUp warned her.

“I’m going to keep walking you home now. The only time I’ll wait for you by our neighborhood now, is when you tutor Chanwoo.”

Haeri smiled, “That sounds good to me.” She moved closer to his warmth, the chilly wind blew and she shivered down to her bones.

“We have one more class and then I can walk you home.” JongUp said, walking back towards the door of the roof.

“Are you going to stay?” Haeri asked him quietly. She pulled away from him in time for them to get back into the hallway.

“I’d like to. If that’s okay.” JongUp muttered softly, only loud enough for her to hear.

“Of course it is.” Haeri said, plastering a smile on her face, moving away from him to go back to the classroom their separate ways. Just one more class period, and then they could talk again, about Junhong or anything else.

She slipped back into the classroom and saw Junhong was already in his seat. She noticed his hesitation to stand up and she went straight to her seat and opened a book.

He stopped himself as JongUp walked back in as well, with Mr. Kim following behind soon after. Whatever he wanted to say was surely not that important, if he wasn’t going to confront her about it.
