Baek in a Box

Baekhyun snuggled into the warmth, his cape wrapped protectively around him. It was dark and even if Baekhyun lifted his hands in front of his face, he could not see them. With every moment he spent in the dark, he felt as though the walls were slowly closing in around him. Every now and then, he would be thrown off his feet or bumped into the wall, which would bend under Baekhyun’s weight.

It was a rough journey, but Baekhyun couldn’t have expected much more; they don’t exactly have warnings about travelling via jacket pocket, and even if they did, well, Baekhyun had braced himself for far worse, anyway.

Trying to keep as still as possible, Baekhyun tucked his knees up to his chin, wrapping his cape around his body once more. At least if he was sitting down, he wouldn’t get knocked around so much.

Tilting his head upwards, Baekhyun heaved a heavy sigh. The hidden inside pocket of Chanyeol’s jacket was far bigger than he thought it was. But none the less rough had he of travelled in the side pocket instead.

A finger prodded the pocket gently, Chanyeol’s voice reaching Baekhyun’s ears:

“Shh,” he murmured. “Keep quiet.”

It sounded so much louder now that Baekhyun was against his chest. It was low, deep; it sounded almost like thunder. Baekhyun nodded.

“Okay, Mister Giant. Sorry.”

“Good. This was your idea, anyway.”

Puffing out his cheeks, Baekhyun fell silent. Chanyeol was right, it was his idea. If there was something that Baekhyun had always wanted to do, it was go to the picture theatre and watch a movie with his Mister Giant.

“Are you sure this is the movie you want to watch, Baek?” Chanyeol had asked him for the umpteenth time earlier that day. “A horror movie?”

“Yes!” Baekhyun affirmed. “I’m brave! I can watch a horror movie.”

“Won’t you be scared?”

“No,” Baekhyun replied, giving Chanyeol a determined nod. “I’ll have Mister Giant to protect me if I get scared. And I have my cape and … And …” he trailed off, gazing across the lounge room. “Can Mister Byun come too? And Mister Ducky?”

“Mister Ducky, uh, has an appointment today,” Chanyeol told him, unsure of how he had managed to make friends with a bath toy. “Why do you want to bring a teddy bear?”

“In case you get scared, of course!” Baekhyun had told him.

“Pfft. Horror it is.”

Baekhyun smiled at the thought. He could finally show Chanyeol how brave he was! Baekhyun snuggled into his cape as he waited in silence. He could hear the dull roar of the people that bustled around the shopping complex. He could feel Chanyeol take each breath; his stomach rising and falling rhythmically. He could hear Chanyeol’s heartbeat against his chest softly.

Chanyeol came to a halt and Baekhyun looked around in the darkness in an attempt to see what might have stopped him. Were they in the picture theatre now? Could he come out of the pocket? Baekhyun wriggled in anticipation, only to be poked by Chanyeol once more.

“Hi, how are you today?” came an unfamiliar female voice. Baekhyun’s brow wrinkled. Who was that? Who was talking to his Mister Giant?

“Fine thanks,” came Chanyeol’s husky reply. “One adult and, uh, one child for The Conjuring, please.”

“Huh?” came the unfamiliar voice. “Child? The Conjuring? I hope they know what they are in for. Where are they?”

“Where is who?” Chanyeol asked, shifting uncomfortably on the spot. Baekhyun heard his heart rate pick up.

“The person you are buying the ticket for,” the female voice responded gently.

“U-uh,” Chanyeol stammered, thinking quickly on the spot. “Buying snacks at the Candy Bar.”

A pause. Baekhyun listened carefully. Did she know? What if Chanyeol got into trouble. “Enjoy the movie.”

“Thank you.”

Baekhyun sank back to the ground in relief.

“Here,” Chanyeol grumbled, lifting Baekhyun out of his pocket and placing him on one of the red covered chairs in the theatre. “You will be the death of me, honestly.”

Baekhyun grinned in triumph, breaking his gaze away from Chanyeol to take in the vastness of the theatre room. Rows and rows of chairs, alternating from crimson to a deep royal blue rose upwards towards the roof. The scent of popcorn reached his nostrils.

Baekhyun bubbled with excitement, turning to face the front of the room – the screen. He frowned.

“Um, Mister Giant?”

“What is it, Baekhyun?”

“I can’t see.”

That was quite a problem. He couldn’t so much as see even the topmost sliver of the screen.

“I’ll get you a booster pillow,” Chanyeol sighed, doing his best to disguise the amused smile that threatened to tug the corners of his lips upwards. Walking to the end of the aisle, Chanyeol disappeared out of sight, returning several moments later with a thick, royal blue pillow, the width of the chair. Scooping Baekhyun up in one hand, he placed the booster pillow in the slot between the armrests before replacing Baekhyun atop it once more.

“How’s that?”

“Still no good,” Baekhyun said, standing on his tip toes in an attempt to see over the back of the chair in front of him.

“Alright,” Chanyeol laughed, “wait here.” Again, he disappeared, returning this time with two more booster pillows, one blue and one crimson. Placing the two additions atop the first pillow, he then sat Baekhyun atop once more.

“I can see!” Baekhyun clapped excitedly. “I can see!”

Whimpering quietly, Baekhyun wrapped his cape around him tightly, his eyes peeping through a tiny gap. Again and again, Baekhyun squeaked in fright, wriggling farther and farther back on his chair until he could snuggle against Mister Byun, Chanyeol’s teddy bear who now wore a cape in the same colour as Baekhyun’s.

Trying his best to turn away from the movie, Baekhyun clung onto the fleece of the teddy bear. He couldn’t look. He couldn’t. Even just the audio was enough to make him shiver with fright.

A hand wrapped tightly around Baekhyun’s torso and he was lifted away from Mister Byun.

“I told you it was scary,” Chanyeol whispered, placing Baekhyun on his shoulder.

Chancing a look back at the screen, another whimper escaped Baekhyun’s lips and he buried his face in Chanyeol’s hair. He wanted to be brave, he really did. He wanted nothing more than to show Chanyeol how brave he was. But this …

“Mister Giant?” Baekhyun squeaked, his eyes pinched tightly shut. “Can we see Frozen next time, please?”
