True Friends

Bridging Gaps

I feel you guyssss! Author-shi wants to kill that bastard too! You don't know how much my heart hurts while I edit the last chapter. T.T

(Yah, author somelove, I know you love Minho coz he looks like someone. HAHAHA. You have to write more kryber fluffy scenes to make it up to us.)

Amber doesn't deserve a bestfriend like Minho, right? Berber deserves to be happy too, right? Seriously, I miss writing those lovey dovey kryber scenes but for now...I don't know. Everything will fall into it's rightful place soon, just be patient, okay? For now here's a yulber treat for all of you to calm your nerves down.

Yulber bromance ftw!

Yuri’s POV

From: Sica Baby

Seobang, can we go out next time? Krystal’s complaining that her head hurts. I have to accompany her to the doctor. You understand, right? I’ll make it up to you soon. I love you. :*

Breathe in, breath out. Kwon Yuri, it’s alright. There’s always a next time.

Great, she just cancelled our date while I was there outside their apartment building already, stupidly waiting for nothing. I really wanted to throw my phone out of the car’s window when I read her reply. It’s actually not the first time that Sica cancelled our date because of Krystal but why do I feel like I was tossed aside all of a sudden? Is it that difficult for you to make a little time for your girlfriend huh, Sica?

Calm down, Yuri. You’re just her girlfriend, of course Krystal is more important to her.

As usual, I put up a little bit more patience, avoiding an argument with my girlfriend. She must be going through a hard time and I didn’t want to be a burden to her. Being her loyal seobang, I had to be as understanding as ever and stand by her side.

To Sica Baby:

Do you need a ride to the hospital? I’ll drive you there.

While waiting for Sica’s reply, I pulled a silver mini box from my jeans’ pocket. I took a glance at the small glittering object inside, admiring its beauty for a minute before tucking it back.

I guess it’s not yet time. *sigh*

*beep*

It was a new message from Jessica that I wish I shouldn’t have read.

From Sica Baby:

Yul, we talked about this. Krystal won’t like it for sure. I’ll call you later, okay? Love you.

For the nth time, Jessica just rejected my offer. The reason? Ha! That bratty little sister of her!

Sica, I can’ take this anymore!

To Sica Baby:

What do you expect? That every ‘I love you’ will make me feel better? This is too much, Sica. Just so you know I worked overnight last night for this day off. I thought we could finally spend some time alone together and now what? You’re telling me you can’t go out with me because Krystal doesn’t want to see us together? You meant it that way, right? Fine, do what you want. I won’t give a about it anymore. PS: Don’t call me, Krystal won’t like it.

I switched my phone off and tossed it on the car’s backseat before driving off.

‘I just don’t get it. How could my beautiful sister fall in love with a person like you? You’re not rich, you’re not so handsome either and worst, you’re a girl. I wish unnie will find someone better, someone like my Minho oppa. Tell me Kwon Yuri, how much love potion did you use on my sister?’

Maybe Krystal’s right. I’m no good for her sister. Though she changed and turned into a completely different Krystal, I couldn’t argue with the fact that I’m a girl and Sica being in a relationship with me draws a lot of criticisms from other people.

But Sica loves me. She even asked me to marry her. *sigh*

These past three months had been really tough for me but I know that the pain I’m feeling right now is nothing compared to what Amber has been dealing with. Getting rejected, forgotten by her beloved girlfriend and now being backstabbed by her bestfriend, Amber’s heart being soaked in hydrochloric acid is an understatement for the pain she’s feeling at the moment.

Amber, why is this happening to us? Don’t we really deserve to be loved by the love of our lives?

Getting more frustrated by the thoughts, I decided to go back to work. I’d rather tire myself out than stay at home and stare at the ceiling for the whole day. I wouldn’t mind pulling off another all-nighter if it would mean forgetting about my problems temporarily.

“Oh, Yuri-ah. I thought you’re going out with your pretty girlfriend?” my boss, Professor Kyu asked me as soon as I entered the lab. He was still at the same place I left him this morning, sitting in front of the fumehood and observing the samples of our experiment.

“Change of plans, seonsangnim. Can I continue with the buffers now?” I told him as I put my lab gown on and tied my hair into a bun.

As if I could tell him that my girlfriend cancelled our date again. He would surely hook me up with his hoobaes.

“I finished them earlier. Why don’t you gossip around like the others?” he said as he carefully pipette out samples from the reagent bottle. Just when I realized that my other chemist colleagues were nowhere to be found.

“Where did everyone go?” I asked.

Weird. It’s working time, how can they not be here?

“They say that the chairman’s daughter came to visit with her handsome ‘boyfriend’. You know how nosy your colleagues are.”

I just hummed in response and went to my desk to gather some data sheets where I found a sticky note posted on my mini corkboard.

“By the way, a ‘guy’ dropped by earlier and was looking for you. I didn’t know you’re coming so I just gave ‘him’ your contact number,” Professor Kyu told me when he noticed the sticky note.

My eyes widened upon reading what’s written on that tiny piece of paper.

Nice workplace, Yul. See you soon.

-Your best man

PS: +157xxxxxxxx

“Seonsangnim, I have to go now. I earned another date. See you on Monday. Thank you,” I told him as I removed my lab gown again and ran out of the lab without looking back.

Omfg. Amber’s here!

As soon as I reached my car, I fastened my seatbelt and drove off the car pool. I dialled the number on the note and after the third ring, I heard that familiar deep dorky voice from the other line.

“I heard you’re on a date with Jessie noona.” Amber might have answered with a tease but the gloomy tone was still evident in her voice. I wanted to cry upon hearing her for the first time in three months. God knows what my good friend has been going through.

“Nah, I cancelled our date,” I lied. Of course it’s Sica who cancelled the date herself. “Where are you, dino? Let’s meet up. Wait, are you in your place? I’ll be there in ten minutes,” I told her before taking a big U-turn at the intersection.

“Let’s meet at Tresto, Yul,” she said. I could hear a girl’s voice talking from the other line but I couldn’t understand what she was saying. “She’s the friend I’m talking about. Stop acting like a jealous wife,” I heard Amber uttered. “Yul, in Tresto, okay? See you there in fifteen minutes.”

“But Amber it’s only—

And she hung up.

Tresto in broad daylight? Perfect. And who’s that other girl with Amber?

I parked in front of the restobar which has been a memorable place for Amber and her high school sweetheart. It meant the same thing to me since it was the place where Sica and I had our first date. I smiled to myself, briefly reminiscing the memories of that night when I also confessed my love for the Ice Princess and earned four slaps right after. Also the ‘Love means never having to say you’re sorry’ line as her reply, everything just came back to me. Sica and I, we’ve been through a lot.

You can’t give up right now, Kwon Yuri.

I entered the dim-lit place and was immediately greeted by a young man about the same age as me, wiping the counter table. He didn’t look surprised when he saw me walked in; he just abandoned what he was doing, put his bartender outfit on and walked towards me.

“You must be Miss Kwon?” he asked. I raised an eyebrow and simply nodded. “Ah, welcome to Tresto.”

The guy just escorted me to the deluxe bar counter before turning the disco lights on and played some relaxing RnB music. It was the first time I visited this place since I came back from China and I could say that nothing much has changed. The comfy couches and refreshing vibe of the place were still present as well as the stage where my Sica baby first sang a song for Amber.

Who would have thought that the Jung sisters fell for the same person before? And who would have thought that I made Jessica Jung fall out of love from that person and made her fall for me instead?

“Amber-shi asked me to serve you this first before you order anything,” the guy told me and offered me a glass of the vodka-peach schnapps-cranberry mix. I just nodded and took a sip of the bloody red drink.

It was on the beach, my favourite cocktail. Amber knows it best since we spent a lot of nights drinking together to nurse our broken hearts and I would usually order this drink first in preparation for a night-long drinking session. I laughed mentally, remembering how that dinosaur teased me that I only wanted the cocktail because of its name.

“Does Kim Jiwon still work here?” I asked, realizing that it was also the place where Jiwon works.

“Yes, but she won’t be here today since Amber-shi booked the whole place for a night,” the bartender answered and started wiping the wine glasses at the glass rack.

Amber rented this place? Damn, the dinosaur finally began living as a Liu. I wonder if she went back to work even after what happened.

“Can I have another glass of ‘this’?” I told the bartended who was looking the other way.

“Can’t say the cocktail’s name, huh?” the voice which I only heard from the phone earlier came to life and there I saw the familiar llama face that I wanted to punch so bad. She was wearing that camouflage jacket, my gift for her 22nd birthday and a black LA roundcap from our friend Soryong. Amber looked skinny now, her face was pale, her eyes were dark and gloomy.

“A-Amber,” I stuttered. I should punch her for not replying my emails and letting little Jung be snatched away by Choi Minho but I couldn’t. My tears just flowed out of my eyes uncontrollably and the feeling of finally seeing my long lost sister emerged from deep within.

“Y-Yul—

I cut whatever she was going to say when I attacked her with a hug.

“You’re alive. I thought something bad happened to you. I thought you killed yourself, I thought—

“I’m fine, Yul. I might be going through a bumpy road but I’m surviving,” she replied. I pulled from our little brotherly hug and cupped her face. Amber really looked pale that the bruises on her face were noticeable, including her swollen lips. “Yah, who did you kiss this time that your lips are like that?” I kidded, trying to lighten up our mood.

I could still remember how Amber and Krystal’s lips would look like after their make out session in our dorm back in college. Believe it or not but my Sica baby could do worse on mine.

“Do I look that bad? Minseok did this,” Amber replied, pouting stupidly. My dear friend really hasn’t change at all. She’s still the same childish dork I met several years ago.

“What? Minseok kissed you that hard?” I teased, earning me a hard punch on the arm from Amber. We ended up laughing together like we didn’t have any problems at all.

“Damn, I should take revenge on Minseok. Look at what he did to my face. I’m no longer handsome,” Amber whined. I just laughed even harder at her childishness. “So, let’s drink ‘til tomorrow, shall we?” Amber led me back to the counter and sat beside me. I watched her talking to the bartender and I was amused on how she could manage to fake a smile like that. “Two soju bombs, please,” she told the bartender.

“You’re really serious about drinking this early, huh?” I told her as I gladly took the glass she offered me. “Are you sure you’re alright, Am?” I couldn’t help but ask.

Of course she’s not alright, Kwon Yuri. Will you be alright if the girl you proposed to suddenly couldn’t remember you and chose to be with your bestfriend?

“I’m fine, Yul,” she answered before drinking all the contents of her glass. “Five more of these please,” she told the bartender who looked surprise by Amber’s order.

You’re not fine, Amber.

“Soju bomb for late lunch, ha, typical drunkard Amber Liu,” I said before taking a sip of my drink. “So what did you call me here for? You just disappeared all of a sudden, cutting all your connections with us again and now you came back. Wait, does Sica know this already? Let me—

I was about to pull my phone from my pocket but Amber prevented me, slightly shaking her head.

“I know you’re relationship with her is going through a rough time lately, I heard from Jessie noona’,” she said, emptying another glass of soju bomb.

Geez, a drinking machine really.

“It must be hard for you two, I’m sorry,” she told me while looking into my eyes sincerely. Everytime our eyes meet, I would always see how lonely Amber was. And with what she said, I knew exactly what she meant.

“Amber, it’s not your fault. Please don’t blame yourself for what happened,” I told her. I just watched her drink another glass and sighed.

“She’s happy with him, right?” Amber asked, looking down on his fourth glass of somaek, watching the ice drift on the gold liquid. I could sense the bitterness on her voice.

“Am, Krystal might be happy with him right now but what about in the future? What if she remembers you? You know how much she loves you. And you love her too, right?”

Damn, I can’t just let Amber give up on Krystal. I can’t let my friend give up her happiness.

“I love her so much, Yul. You’re probably the only person who knows how much I love Krystal since you witnessed everything right from the start.” Amber smiled at me bitterly as tears were on the verge of breaking out from her eyes.

“You love her and you know that she loves you too. It’s just that she can’t remember you. Fight for her, Am. You can’t give up now. Just come back for good and tell her who you are in her life.”

“What’s the point of telling her about me, Yul? That won’t change the fact that she doesn’t remember me and is now happily in love with my bestfriend instead.”

“But Amber, what about you? Don’t tell me you’re also thinking about your bastard bestfriend’s happiness? You have no idea how much I wanted to beat him into a pulp for stealing Krystal,” I told her before taking a long straight shot and slamming the glass on the bar counter. I was furious, the thought of the Choi Minho’s face was the reason. How could he do that to Amber? They’ve been bestfriends since middle school but he betrayed her?

you, Choi Minho. you!

“Don’t worry about me, Yul. I’ll find my own happiness soon too. Though it might be a little difficult but I believe that it’s just right around the corner,” Amber said, looking blankly at the wall this time.

What the hell is this dinosaur saying?

“Don’t tell me you’re moving on?! Yah, Amber Liu! You told me not to give up on Sica if I really love her. Why are you giving up on Krystal when it’s as clear as pure water that you’re in love with her?” I retorted. Amber was making me impatient with her replies that I raised my voice at her. She just smiled at me faintly and patted my shoulder.

“I might have mistakenly chosen Minho as my bestfriend but I’m glad you’re always there for me, Yul,” she said before raising her newly filled glass of somaek. “You’re a true friend, Yuri-ah. Let’s cheers to that.”

And we shared multiple toasts of friendship together.

Amber’s POV

Only three hours have passed since we met again but it seemed like Yuri and I had talked forever. We managed to talk about almost everything I missed while I was gone, including the emails she sent me. I couldn’t help but feel bitter in every conversation we had but thanks to the alcohol, I got through it all with numbness in my heart. Yuri’s company made me feel a little better too.

“So you met that girl in China, huh?”

I was taken aback by Yuri’s sudden question. I gave her a who-are-you-talking about look and continued digging on the plate of freshly cut apples as appetizers.

I hope you know that Krystal is allergic to apple, Choi Minho.

“That girl in the phone earlier, who is she? Wait, don’t tell me you actually found a substitute for Krystal already? Amber, you can’t just move on like that!” Yuri told me in surprise.

“Yah, don’t call her a substitute. She’s too good to be called like that,” I replied.

Of course Suzy doesn’t deserve to be called like that. She came into my life before all these things happened and though I wanted to blame her sometimes, it’s just so unreasonable. Our parents tangled our lives on purpose and Suzy was just a victim like me.

Suzy is a thoughtful person, she went all the way to my place in Hongkong just to invite me for her birthday personally. She took care of me well while I was in the hospital and didn’t leave my side until I got discharged. She even talked to my father about my travel ban and took me to Korea with her. I wouldn’t be here in the first place if it’s not for Bae Suzy. It’s just the ‘wifey’ endearment that’s annoying the hell out of me.

“Amber Liu, did you just defend her? Oh my god, this can’t be happening! How can you move on in three months time when you even went through two years of moving on but failed? I can’t believe this,” she said, followed by her nth glass of somaek.

“She’s just a friend, okay?” I emphasized the ‘friend’ word. Yuri just nodded and continued drinking.

Am I supposed to tell Yuri about her? Well we’re not officially engaged yet.

“What about Jessie noona, Yul? Did you propose to her?” As much as I feel bitter about the word ‘propose’, I had to ask Yuri about it. I wanted to help her in any way that I could in return for being there for me and Krystal always.

Yuri seemed frozen for a while by the question but managed to recover quickly. She let out a deep sigh, hanging her head low and shaking it slightly.

“And you’re already asking me to be your best man? You’re really something,” I teased Yuri, making her red as a tomato. “So how far have you planned? Do you have a ring already?”

Yuri pulled something from her pocket and laid it in front of me. It was a mini silver box from a famous jewelry shop. I opened the box, revealing a silver ring with a sparkling piece of white diamond on top.

“They say diamonds are girls’ bestfriend,” she said.

Geez, Yuri must have saved a lot for this.

I closed the box again and returned it to her.

“Sheesh. As a chemist you must know that when you heat that diamond and drop it into water, it will only become carbon dioxide. A thousand dollars is too expensive for several moles of carbon dioxide, Yul,” I . Yuri just frowned upon realizing that what I said was true.

“So why haven’t you proposed yet? Is it because of K—K-Krystal?” I stuttered at the mention of her name. I tried to sound as casual as I could but every time I utter Krystal’s name, I would always stutter like a child. Yuri smiled bitterly and lightly nodded her head.

Yuri told me about Krystal’s sudden changes and her new view of same- relationship was the most painful for me. It only means that I could no longer revive our love when just the thought of it, she would feel disgusted. I cried hours upon knowing it and in the end I just accepted it. It also happened to be the prime reason why I’m giving up.

“Don’t mind her, Yul. Jessie noona’s happiness is all that matters, right?” I told Yuri and she nodded once again.

“You will propose to her, right?” Yuri nodded again.

“You will propose to her tonight, right?” And she nodded again but her eyes widened later.

“Not tonight!” she exclaimed. Geez, Yuri’s face was priceless.

“C’mon, you’re already here at the venue of your first date. Isn’t it sentimental?”

“No, not tonight. We’re still not in good terms,” she replied. “Five glasses more, please,” she told the bartender after emptying her glass.

“Oooh. You’re nervous, huh?” I teased.

“Of course, I am! What if I get rejected like you?” Yuri stopped for a moment when she saw my smile faded. Yes, she just rubbed some salt into my fresh wound. We fell silent for a while and stared on each of our glasses.

“Look, I didn’t mean to say—

“No, it’s fine. It’s true anyway,” I replied with a forced smile. “Drink up, Kwon Yuri. We have the whole bar tonight. Drink all you can, my treat.”

“Alright, rich kid,” she replied with a grin and raised her glass. “For the Jung sisters!” I nodded then raised my glass as well. “Woohoo! Cheers!”

Remember the time when I had a drink with Key in a pojangmacha until we passed out? I felt like today’s going to be worse. Kwon Yuri just ordered the bartender to mix all the displayed liquor in one glass and serve them on the rocks. The bartender of course hesitated at first but when I gave him a go signal, he followed Yuri’s order and served two glasses of the cocktail. Just the smell of it made me flinch but since Yuri dared me to do so, I didn’t think twice drinking.

The bitter taste was too strong but I felt even better after. It overwhelmed the bitterness I felt that I enjoyed drinking it until both of us got crazily drunk. I didn’t know how long I managed to hold on until my head began to feel so heavy and rested on the counter. I watched the blurry figure of the swaying Kwon Yuri who was poking my cheek.

“Yah, Amber Liu! Can you hear me?!” she shouted right at my ear that made me cup her whole face with one hand and pushed her away.

“I’m not deaf, you fool. No need to shout,” I replied, eyes closed already. I just wanted to sleep at the moment but the noisy Kwon Yuri was shaking me violently.

“You’re going to my wedding, right? You’ll be my best man, right?” she babbled nonstop in her drunken tone.

“I will. Now shut up.” I swatted her hand away and started my journey to Lalala Land. But before everything went blank, I heard Kwon Yuri say,

“You’re a true friend, Am.”

Suzy’s POV

If I only knew that you’ll be drinking on your first day in Seoul, I wouldn’t have brought you here in the first place, Liu Yiyun.

I stepped on the gas to reach the destination quickly. I was just cooking some lasagne for dinner in Yiyun’s place earlier but there I was racing my way to a certain bar where my fiancée was after receiving a call from the bartender.

And who’s that friend you’re drinking with? Why does she have to be the first person to look for when you got here? Don’t tell me she’s that girlfriend of yours?

Aish, Bae Suzy. It’s none of your business.

I parked in front of the so-called Tresto and marched towards the entrance where I bumped into another girl. I got slightly intimidated by her beauty for a moment. Her beautiful golden hair danced with the wind and the way she dressed earned praise from me.

Uh, that pink trench coat matches her petite frame but it will look better on me.

We exchanged looks for a while, silently debating who would go inside first but I got defeated by the way she looked. There was something in her eyes that sent chills down my spine that my hand automatically gave up on the door knob and let her in first.

“Yuri-ah!” I heard her say. The blonde went running towards a tanned girl who was sleeping cutely with her tongue out. “Yuri-ah, can you hear me?” She was busy caressing the other girl’s face that she didn’t notice the presence of another person right across them.

“Yiyun!” It was my time to run when I recognized the figure. Her head was buried in her arms, resting on the counter. “Yiyun, let’s go.” I poked the back of her neck but she wasn’t responding.

“Wait, what did you just say?” the blonde girl asked me, her eyes widened in surprise when they landed on the other sleeping person. She rushed towards me and helped me pull Yiyun until she finally saw her face. I didn’t know why but the girl’s reaction was unexplainable.

“Amber! Oh my god,” she uttered, pushing me aside to take care of her.

Who is this girl? How did she know Yiyun?

“Who are you?” I couldn’t help but ask. The way she looked and touched my fiancée was so full of care that I couldn’t help but think that she’s someone close to her.

“No, who are you? And where are you taking that llama?” she asked in return when as she watched me pull Yiyun off her seat and let her arm dangle on my shoulder.

I didn’t want to answer her question and just decided to walk away with Yiyun until the blonde girl stopped me. “Miss, I think you should take care of the other girl. I’ll bring Yiyun home.”

She just looked back at the other sleeping girl and sighed before looking back at me. “Girl, I can’t let you take her away just like that.”

“And why is that so? I’m her girlfriend, isn’t it just right for me to take care of her?” I replied.

“Are you sick? That dork is crazily in love with my sister and even proposed marriage to her.”

With her words, I fell speechless. I felt my heart clench. My hand automatically slipped away from my tight grip on Yiyun’s waist.

You’re crazy, Bae Suzy. You’re just a nobody in Yiyun’s life.

My tears were threatening to fall at the same time I returned my sleeping fiancée on the bar counter. “Ah, arasso. P-Please take care of her…a-and tell her to call me tomorrow morning.”

And I left my new found love in the hands of her girlfriend’s sister.
