Chemistry

Bridging Gaps

A/N: Hiiiii! This chapter is a pretty long one. I hope you enjoy reading this since this one left my brain dry. Sorry for the delay again, it's really hard writing different points of view and getting into character in each and every one of them. But I enjoyed writing this one, especially that little yulsic fluff.xD

Krystal's POV

Checking the buffet table from time to time, giving wedding souvenirs to the guests, smiling nonstop at people you didn't know, I was tired of doing the same things for the last two hours. I had nothing to complain though. Amber looked more tired than I was but there she was lifting the wedding gifts all by herself.

It's not for you to care, Krystal. It's the best man's duty after all.

I was going for an extra plate of sliced mangoes on the buffet table when I met Amber on the way. The pile of gifts in her arms were too high that her head could barely be seen behind the boxes. I wanted to help, I could lift some of the light packages so that she could take a rest and flirt with her girlfriend---No. She could do the work all by herself.

“Uh, Krystal-shi. Can you move out of the way, please?”

Just when I realized that I was standing right in Amber's way. It would be fun if she would trip and pick up all those boxes again but I decided to spare her this time for her cuteness by just poking her head to see where she was going. I moved towards the right and let her pass.

“Thank you,” she said and it's in English for goodness sake! How could a simple statement sound cute and y at the same time?

“Where are you going?” My heart nearly jumped when I heard my boyfriend's voice. I saw Minho oppa quickly approaching me wearing that pissed expression all over his face.

“I'm going to get some mangoes. You want some?” I asked. He looked like a jealous boyfriend with those doubtful eyes.

“Krystal, stop talking--

* ring ring *

Minho oppa was interrupted by a phone call and I was relieved that the call's timing was right. “Yes, Mr. Kim...I told you I'm in Jeju for a friend's wedding. I won't be back until tomorrow morning...No, please connect me to Mr. Jang...”

Friend's wedding? Ha! Isn't this your girlfriend's sister's wedding? I know you're friends with Yuri but what the hell!

I was about to go but he surprisingly caught my wrist.

“Yes, sir. This is Engineer Choi Minho of Choi Constructions. About my father's proposal for your mall in Hongdae...No, sir! My team will present it to you...Tonight? But, sir...I understand, we'll meet you at 10pm.”

My boyfriend's hand loosened my wrist and slid on my palm as he tucked back his phone in his jacket pocket. He let out a deep sigh and met my glare. His doubtful eyes a while ago changed into pleading ones this time.

“Of course you can go,” I told him. Though it's disappointing that he chose his job over me for the nth time, I had to understand that he was doing it for his future, for our future.

“Look, I'm sorry, babe. Mr. Jang insisted to see the plan before midnight and I need to be there as the project head,” he explained. He tried to cup my face in his big hands but I turned away.

“I understand. I told you that you can go.”

“But you have to go with me.”

I looked at him in disbelief. “Go with you? Excuse me, Choi Minho. You know what day today is, right?”

“Yes, yes. It's an important day for your sister and we have to be here to support her. But babe, this project is more important. It will define my future in my field. It will define...our future together. Now you have to go with me.”

I couldn't believe this guy. Did he just make me choose him, my boyfriend for a year over my sister for life? The nerve!

“Pack your bags, go back to Seoul and do what you have to do but I'm not going with you. I may be head over heels in love with you but I'm not choosing you over my sister.”

We were both shocked by what I blurted out. In fact, I didn't know where all the courage came from. I was vulnerable when it came to Minho oppa, he's the best memory of my life before my accident. I loved him so much that I begged Jessica unnie to let me be with him. But today, he just made me feel that he's not worth it.

“K-Krystal, listen to me--

“No, I won't listen to you.”

“Fine. Do what you want. Let's break up then.”

I felt a lump inside my throat, unable to utter anything. I looked around us, everybody was too busy to notice that in the same room with them, there's a couple on the verge of breaking up. I looked at my sister who was playfully feeding Kwon Yuri a spoonful of their wedding cake, they were having the time of their lives while I was going through a rough break up with the man I love the most. I couldn't blame them, they found the right person in each other.

Are you really the right person for me, oppa? Because I'm not so sure anymore.

“How could you say that so easily?” I asked, darting my glares to the handsome face that made me fall in love over and over again.

Oppa looked hesitant. It was evident in his face that he wanted to take those words back but he never did. He chose to stand his ground and break my heart.

“O-Okay. Let's do that. L-Let's break up.”

I walked away before the first drop of tear broke out of my eyes. Oppa didn't say anything nor run after me. How could he let me go just like that? Maybe he really didn't love me after all. Maybe he got tired of me that he chose to be with that Kokoro instead.

I locked myself inside the restroom and there I cried my heart out. I cried until I ran out of tears, until I ran out of breath. The mirrors revealed how big of a mess I was. I looked pathetic but I didn't care. I just broke up with the love of my life that I just wanted to die.

* ring ring *

Thinking it was Minho oppa, I quickly pulled my phone to check who it was only to find out that it was Vic unnie. I tried my best hold back my tears and answered the call.

“Unnie.”

“Krys, Amber wants to talk to you,” she said. My ears perked up the mention of Amber but I was too lazy to care.

“Tell her I'm busy.” Busy grieving over my break up with her bestfriend.

“But it's important.” Vic unnie did sound like it was urgent. And did I just hear the sound of the waves coming from the other line? Where on earth were they?

“I don't care.” All I care about now is Minho oppa.

“It's about you and Minho.”

Could Amber possibly know what happened? Did she overhear me and oppa fighting earlier?

My heart was given a little boost by the thought of Amber helping me to rekindle with Minho oppa but then I realized that they were actually not in good terms. Why else would that llama ask me out for a conversation? But I wouldn't find out if didn't meet her, right?

“A-Arraseo. Where are you guys at?”

“Uh...just walk out of the hotel and walk along the shore. Just walk a little bit further, you'll find her--I mean, you'll find us.” And she ended the call.

Curious about what Amber wanted to say, I lazily retouched and dragged myself out to meet them. It didn't take long until I found myself along Jeju's famous shoreline, admiring the bright lights of different colors illuminating the other side of the sea. Feeling the waves crash upon my feet and embracing the cool salty sea breeze made me feel light and carefree. It would be perfect if I had witnessed the Jeju sunset scene with the person I love just like in movies.

Dream on, Krystal. You just broke up with him.

I almost cried again at the thought of Minho oppa but the sound of a girl's voice shrieking and laughing at the same time diverted my attention instead. I turned to see who it was and found that girl whom I only knew for several hours but had completely become an eyesore to me since then. She looked so innocent, playing with the water without caring about the dress she was wearing. How could such a simple thing make this girl so happy? And I just found out the reason why.

There was Amber, standing handsomely just several steps away, her killer eyes were smiling instead and were all set at the beautiful girl in front of her. Yes, I had to admit that her fiancée was beautiful, anyone would feel beautiful if someone looked at you the same way as Amber.

Minho oppa never made me feel like that. * sigh *

The couple's fun was put on hold when Amber's fiancée seemed to lose something to which Amber attended immediately. The llama looked so serious as they began searching the shore that I got a little bit curious of what it was. After a minute or two, Amber finally found it. From what it looked like, it was a mere silver necklace that brought back the smile on the couple's faces like it was the symbol of their love. And there I was watching the lovey dovey scene of that girl kissing Amber nonstop like she planned on putting lipstick marks all over the llama's face.

I didn't know why but seeing them pricked something inside me. Maybe I was jealous, jealous of that girl's happiness, jealous of how she could be so happy no matter how complicated the relationship she entered.

Before I got hooked into this movie-like scene in front of me, I suddenly remembered why I was actually there. But where the hell was Vic unnie and why was that llama just flirting around when she asked to meet up with someone? Aish. I shouldn't have come.

The next scene made my heart feel heavier that I wasn't so sure anymore why I was still standing there. The scene of Amber putting around the pendant around the girl's neck, it was too familiar that my mind started thinking of whereelse could I have possibly seen the same thing happened.

Beach.

Necklace.

Backhug.

It wasn't just a movie scene, I was 100% sure of that.

Beach.

Sunset.

Moonlight.

Just when a picture was being drawn little by little inside my mind, the pain in my head became even more unbearable. My head started throbbing like crazy and everything was going in circles. My hand searched for something to lean on but it failed.

Backhug.

Star.

Necklace.

Fireworks.

It was like torture. I felt my body hit the sand, I couldn't take it anymore. Before everything went black, I heard someone at the back of my mind saying:

Will you be my girlfriend, Krystal Jung?

Suzy's POV

Hello, this is Liu Yiyun. Please leave a message and I'll call you back.

I lost count of how many times I dialled Amber's number only to hear her sweet husky voice through the answering machine. Her phone's out of reach, I understood that she may had ran out of batteries but it wasn't too hard to find a way to contact me and tell me not to worry, right? I was scared to death when I found Krystal unconscious on the beach but I was more worried about Amber.

It wasn't easy holding in the feelings that you had tried to forget but was buried instead deep within you heart. Your fury towards the person you referred as the brother you never had but turned his back on you, your bitterness about the wedding because you were supposed to get married back then, your great love for the person you would just not forget no matter what you do. Today, Amber's heart must had gone through a lot.

* ring ring *

I quickly grabbed my phone expecting the call to be from Amber only to be disappointed in the end. It was an overseas call from a friend in Paris instead, the call that I needed right now next to Amber's.

“Hey,” I answered.

“Bae Suzy, where are you? Why is hyung not answering?” That rattling voice from the other line, Amber should prepare for another nagging aside from mine.

“Krystal was taken to the hospital. Amber took her there and...she must be taking care of her,” I said, trailing off at the last part of my statement.

“Jinja?? What happened?? Is she okay? What about her sister? And Yuri-shi? And why is hyung taking care of Krystal instead?”

My heart felt like a needle cushion at the thought of Amber's actions earlier. The horror in her face when she saw Krystal lifeless on the ground, the worry in her voice as she called Krystal's name over and over again, the way she carefully took Krystal in her arms and ran away; I wanted to get those memories off my mind. But the moment I looked around, my eyes laid on that sand-covered silver leather shoe that just reminded me of everything.

Amber, you even played Cinderella and left a shoe behind.

“Helloooo, am I still talking to someone?” That snapped me out of my thoughts.

“Ah, mianhae. I was just thinking--

“About what took hyung so long when all she had to do was bring Krystal to the hospital and taking care of her is just an option that she will choose if she still cares about Krystal that much.”

I smiled bitterly at the truth in those words. “Amber still loves her.”

“That's given already. But hyung cares for you a lot, that's for sure.” I couldn't help but smile at the last statement. The way Amber treated me was getting better and better everyday to the point that I assumed she had somehow considered my feelings but after today, I didn't know anymore.

* knock knock *

It must be Amber.

“Hey, hey, Amber just arrived. I'll call you back, okay?”

I quickly ended the call and ran towards the door, hoping it was Amber who came to see me. Sadly, it was none other than Amber's secretary who must had been sent by his boss to check how I was.

“Zhang Yixing-shi,” I greeted the handsome Chinese guy in front of me. He responded with that cute dimpled smile and a mere thirty degree bow, unlike the ninety degree ones that he used to do.

“Hey, I came here without my lord's orders but as a friend who wants to cheer you up.” Once again he flashed that dimpled smile, a toothy one this time, and revealed a plastic bag from behind. “Drink this to nurse your heart for now.”

I accepted the plastic bag from Yixing and heard bottles clinking that I realized what the contents were. “Aish. I told you guys I don't drink.”

“But it will help you get some sleep. I know how worried you are about Yiyun staying at the hospital for the night,” he said without meeting eyes. What he said sent a dagger through my heart that I didn't hesitate anymore and wholeheartedly accepted the three bottles of soju.

“I-Is that so? P-Please make sure that she'll eat breakfast then.”

“Arraseo. I'll see if I can set you up a breakfast with her. Goodnight.” Just that, Zhang Yixing gave me a ninety degree bow and left without turning back.

As soon as Yixing left, I jumped back to bed and tried to get some sleep. But with the thought of Amber being with Krystal for the night invading my mind, I decided to stay awake. I would rather stay awake than have nightmares.

Bored, I called my friend back through Facetime. While waiting for my call to be connected overseas, I happened to notice the plastic bag that Yixing gave me earlier. Amber once told me that alcohol made her feel better, that it made her forget about Krystal for a while. I could still remember how Amber's face looked like when I told her that instead of alcohol, I would be the one to make her feel better; how I blushed so hard when I realized how weird it sounded back then. And if it's true that alcohol would make her forget about Krystal, I would've given Amber our company's brewery and made her drink until she could no longer remember even Krystal's name.

Curiousity triggered me to open one of the green-bottled liquids. The alcohol's smell alone made me cringe, what else if I tasted it.

Drink this to nurse my heart? This got to be effective.

With no more hesitation, I took a sip of the clear liquid. It tasted awful! How could Amber tolerate such a taste?

“Yoboseyo. Suzy, all I can see is that chandelier hanging from the ceiling.”

Finally hearing a response from the other line, I grabbed my phone immediately and faced the front cam.

“Here, I know how you miss my beautiful face so here it is,” I kidded.

“I know how you miss mine too but you and hyung can always come back here in Paris if you want to see it for real.” Hearing that evil laugh from the other line, I just responded with a smile. I watched her back on the kitchen countertop and heard knife clattering on the chopping board. Must be preparing dinner.

“I'm not sure if Amber would still bring me with her the next time she visits you.” I didn't know why but as I was waiting for an answer, my hand automatically grabbed the neck of the soju bottle and the bottle's lips ended on mine. I felt a gush of warm liquid ran down my throat as the bitter taste of it left lingering my mouth.

“Why? Do you think she will bring Krystal instead?” At the mention of the name, the knife clattering got louder while I took another gulp of soju, a long one this time. The awful taste seemed to be getting better and better that I started to like it a little.

“I-I don't know.” My level of confidence hit rock bottom hard when I saw how Krystal Jung looked, she's simply perfect in everything that any girl would die to be in her shoes, and in everything, it also meant being perfect with Amber.

I'm sure you think the same way too, Am.

“It will only happen if Krystal regains her memory or if she falls in love with hyung again despite being a girl.”

I couldn't help but drink up at the thought. “D-Do you think it's possible? Is it possible for Krystal to fall for Amber again without regaining her memories?”

“It is. She fell for her once, remember? It wasn't actually too hard for Krystal to fall in love with hyung back then. But it will always still fall to the question of whether Amber still feels the same for Krystal when that happens.”

I winced as I took another long gulp of soju. Surprisingly, I felt numb no matter how painful the truth in my friend's statements could be. Instead of those don't-lose-hope and don't-give-up bulls, her bluntness became more of a great help. At least I knew where to stand and how I should treat Amber without pulling her too hard.

“Is hyung sleeping already? I had to ask her something,” she said. I found her in front of the camera already with a plate of something that looked like pasta and a bottle of wine.

“Sh-She's staying with Krystal for the night.” Reminded of Amber's whereabouts as well as everything that happened earlier, I managed to empty the soju bottle right away.

“Woah, Bae Suzy. Are you drinking?” Her eyeballs were about to pop out of her eyes in surprise. She got the answer she needed when she saw me opened another bottle. “Aigoo, you must have been through a lot today.”

I just smiled in response. We both didn't utter anything for a while as she started digging on her pasta.

“Choi Minho left for Seoul, just in case you're wondering,” I told her. A forced smile drew upon her face as she filled her goblet with wine.

“I know. He sent me a message a while ago.”

Now it's my turn to be surprised.

“Sulli-ah, you're still keeping touch with him??”

Jessica's POV

“Step on the gas.” I didn't know that I married a deaf person when I said those words for the third time and Yuri still wasn't listening. Her eyes glued on the road, still maintaining the same 40 mph speed.

“KWON. YURI. STEP. ON. THE. GAS!”

“Aish, stop yelling will you?”

“What?! You're driving like we are on the moon!”

“I'm just taking care of the plasma TV at the back seat.”

Aish jinja, this wife of mine.

“Kwon Yuri, my sister's in the hospital and we better get our asses there as soon as possible, okay? I don't give a damn about the TV!”

“Oh c'mon. Amber said it's nothing serious.”

“I don't care what that llama says, just take me there as soon as possible!”

Finally, Kwon Yuri stepped on the gas and the car sped off. We should be spending our first night together as newlyweds but bad luck really seemed to always find a way. I received a phone call from Amber saying that she took Krystal to the hospital after fainting at the beach. Seriously, at the beach? What the hell were they doing there?

Thank god Yuri was patient enough to postpone our honeymoon and visit my baby sister instead. I made the right choice of spending the rest of my life with a loving and understanding person like her. No matter how harsh Krystal treated her since the accident, Yuri endured everything and still treated her like a friend, like a sister. Yuri really knew how to handle her emotions well. Everytime I wasn't in the mood or in panic like earlier, she would just stay calm, even if I was yelling at her already.

“Don't worry too much, Amber is there for her,” Yuri assured me, intertwining her free hand with mine. Her eyes left the road for a while and gazed at me with that handsome smile hers. There's some sort of magic in her smile that calmed every nerve inside my body while that loving gaze, it would just defeat my death glares everytime.

“Sica, I know I'm attractive but stop looking at me like that. It makes me want to kiss you,” she said out of the blue. Aish, Kwon Yuri's guts.

“Shut up. Focus on your driving.”

“On driving you crazy, you mean?” Yuri then playfully winked at me, I just died. Gaahd. If it wasn't just too dark in the car, she would've seen my apple red face.

“Shut up,” was all I can say.

“Then shut me up,” she said, grinning at me widely. I pretended to ignore her but I was actually watching her face through the reflection of the car window. How dare she kept that trademark y smile of hers on her gorgeous face that it made me really want to shut her up.

“Stop the car.”

“You said step on the gas pedal, now you want to stop the car. Make up your mind, Your Highness.”

“I said stop the car!”

As soon as the car stopped by the intersection, I grabbed Yuri by the collar and sealed her lips with mine. The breathtaking kiss surely shutted our mouths up for another minute or two until we were left gasping for air.

“Why did you stop the car again?” I asked as we leaned at each other's faces.

“It was red light. But not anymore.” Yuri captured my lips for the last time and started driving again, driving the car and driving me crazy. After several red lights, we managed to reach the hospital where Krystal was taken to.

I asked Yuri to talk to the attending physician while I went straight to my sister's room. Through the slightly ajared door, I spotted Amber sleeping on Krystal's bedside, my sister's hand enveloped in Amber's. Afraid to ruin such a beautiful moment, I decided to stay outside. Yuri came back with two cups of coffee on each hand and I immediately pointed her the scene inside the room.

“The doctor said it's just overfatigue. Amber just overreacted and brought Krystal straight to the emergency room,” my seobang said, smiling like an idiot.

“They really look good together,” I couldn't help but say. It's been over a year since Amber decided to move on and today she showed up with a fiancée but at the end of the day, it's still Krystal that she cared about.

“That night during our drink in Tresto, Amber told me that maybe Krystal losing her is like losing electron.”

Losing electron? Oh the chemistry.

“Don't tell me that she regarded herself as a valence electron, Krystal as a metal and Choi Minho being a non-metal because I will drill in her chemist brain that she made a wrong analogy.”

It's a fact that metals lose electrons to form an ionic bond with a non-metal to gain stability, but in their case, I was so sure that my sister would rather live an unstable life with Amber than lose her.

“Anniyo. Amber regarded Krystal as a crystal.” Yuri's disagreement made me look at her out of curiosity. “A metallic bond is formed by delocalized electrons around positive ions throughout the crystal structure. The strong electrical force of attraction between the delocalised electrons and the positive nuclei makes the metallic bonding in the crystal lattice. Imagine what the metallic crystal would be without those electrons.”

My eyes widened when I realized what Amber might actually meant as Yuri confirmed it with a nod.

“Do you know that Amber is literally an electron?” Yuri stared at me and flashed a smile as I met her with my puzzled gaze. “The word electron was derived from 'elektron', the Greek word for 'amber'.”

“Wow. That's real chemistry then.” I guess I had to praise Amber's analogy. She must really be thinking about my sister when their chemistry professor discussed about chemical bonding.

“Then how about you? Where did your name come from?” I asked. Yuri seemed to be taken aback my sudden question and she started blushing like hell too.

“Uh, I think we should go.” My seobang started walking away, hiding her burning red face. It took me some time to realize why. I almost bursted out laughing at the realization and came running towards her to .

“Seobang, it's a Japanese word, right?” I said, still trying to catch up with her through by walking at her pace. She didn't answer but her reddening ears said it all.

“Aigoo, someone's blushing.”

“Shut up, Sica.”

“Then shut me up.”
