Strawberries

Bridging Gaps

A/N: Bump! I told you I wasn't going to abandon this fic. I love kryber too much. ^^

Sooo where were we? And how are your hearts after they dropped our amber's teasers? :)

Victoria's POV

Two old sweethearts meeting after a long time was something everyone was looking forward to in every high school class reunion. Especially when they have witnessed the past couple's relationship from the beginning until the end? They would tease them to death for sure just to see their cheeks blush for each other once again. For Kryber's case, I wish it could be as simple as that.

I observed Krystal and Amber's interaction throughout the ceremony that I wasn't oblivious of how Krystal acted y around Amber and how the latter treated her ex-girlfriend like a ghost. Surely they had rubbed each other the wrong way this time that even establishing a friendship between them was nearly impossible. But my high-power super telescope-like eyes just caught that subtle five-minute holding-hand-under-the-invitation initiated by Amber and Krystal who held onto her without going berserk, I was amused that the sparks between them still remain.

Moreover, witnessing the past lovers happily dancing in circles with the newlyweds was a precious moment indeed. Kryber looked awkwardly cute and when Yuri squeezed them tight together, I swear I saw how their cheeks flushed.   And this handsome young man beside me was looking at the same direction all along that I was so sure his big eyes caught everything that happened too.

“It's not too late to make things right, kid,” I told him. I wouldn't get tired of telling him the same thing until I manage to yank in some senses to his brain.

Minho tore his stare from the happy sight of Kryber and met my gaze. “Noona, Amber's engaged already,” he answered, smiling victoriously before turning back his attention to the past lovers.

“Engaged? Well, that's a little surprising.” It's surprising indeed. It's pretty clear that Amber still had some feelings left for Krystal, she wouldn't marry someone just to get over her ex-girlfriend, right?

“Now that Amber's getting married anytime soon, there's no reason for me to give up Krystal anymore. You should accept that fact from now on, noona.”

I really wanted to punch Minho's brain out of his head for being too conceited. It's not like he earned Krystal's heart the right way.

“Sometimes I wonder if you really love Krystal or you just want to keep her because of your ego.”

Minho turned to me with a glare, obviously pissed by my last statement.

“Why do you always side with Amber? Right from the start you're betting on Amber to be with Krystal. I was the one you met first, noona,” Minho muttered furiously but low enough for the others not to hear.

I sighed. This kid just slapped me the same question he asked me three years ago when Amber and him were still fighting over Krystal. I realized how immature Minho is until now. And just like three years ago, I gave him the same reply, “I'm not siding with Amber because she's closer to me or something but because it's her whom Krystal fell in love with and not you.”

“But noona--

”We both know you broke someone else's heart aside from your bestfriend's. Again, it's not yet too late.” Then I walked out.

You have to wake up, Choi Minho. You already lost your bestfriend. You don't want to lose one more important person in your life.

Amber's POV

Now get married you two?

Aish. Kwon Yuri really knew how to make the situation more awkward. Well at least for me. I still couldn't believe that this beautiful girl in front of me was totally clueless of the meaning behind Yuri's indirect teases, Jessie's meaningful smiles and Vic noona's sparkling eyes. It's just unfair that I was the only one getting burdened by them. Fortunately there was Suzy who constantly cheered me up with her radiant smiles.

Being the best man was so tiring, I had to entertain the guests, formulate a congratulatory speech on the spot and worst, lift the wedding gifts to Yuri's car and assure they're safe. Seriously, I could've died lifting the plasma TV alone if Yixing didn't help me.

I was busy packing the last set of presents inside the car and was about to return to the wedding hall when I felt the presence of someone behind me. Through the reflection of the car window, I recognized who it was.

“You can talk to me without sneaking behind, noona.” I closed the car's trunk and turned to meet those eyes that never failed to comfort me.

“It's hard to get you alone, kid. How about a walk along the shore with this pretty noona?” Vic noona offered, batting her eyelashes with a matching smile. I  burst out laughing upon seeing her act cutely at her age.

“Haha! Yah, stop the cutesy act! You're turning thirty in two years, it doesn't suit you—AW!” Noona just slapped me on the arm really hard, the first one I got from her in thirteen months. I grinned upon seeing her pissed expression and offered my arm that she just slapped. The frown on her face faded and gladly held onto me. With my coat around her shoulders and our shoes in both of our free hands, we started trailing down a part of Jeju's shoreline.

“Suzy-shi seems so nice, Am. She's a nice catch.”

“Mmhmm.”

“How did you two meet?”

“Through our parents.”

“Blind date?”

“Uh, yeah. Sort of.”

“How long have you known each other?”

“Over a year.”

“You're marrying someone whom you just met a year ago?”

Vic noona was the person I trusted the most, she knew that for sure. And as expected, she'd be using the authority of being 'Amber Liu's  most trusted person' to demand some details about my relationship with Suzy.

“You can marry her if you really love her,” she said. I looked at noona in disbelief, totally not expecting those words from a person who had been shipping me with Krystal from the very beginning that it left me speechless.

“I-I...W-well, you see--

“I see you have no plans on marrying her yet,” she said, flashing Victoria's victorious smile. She's actually right and wrong at the same time. Marrying Suzy had already entered my mind but I was just waiting for the right time, the time when I am 100% ready to start a new life with her.

Noona let go of my arm and walked closer to the shore. I followed her and let the little waves hit my sand-covered feet as well with the sight of the sunset and orange sky welcoming us. It really felt so good seeing the sun set once again after a long time.

I  could still remember clearly the last time. The lingering salty smell of the sea breeze, the romantic sky starting to be filled with twinkling stars, the star who outshone all those stars and became the only star in my sky. Her angelic face, her heart-melting smile, her soothing voice, the sweet taste of her lips, the warmth of her embrace, the loving look in her eyes. The beautiful sunsets got extra beautiful when I watched them with her.

I guess today's is just a normal sunset.

“Get married, have kids, live well, spend the rest of your life and afterlife with her. You can do those things if you truly love someone, Am,” Vic noona said, earning my gaze and attention. We held each other's gaze for a while until she shifted her eyes to the sun that could barely be seen behind the mountains.

“You know I had found that person once, noona. But since I lost her, it's just right to move on and give someone else a chance, right?” I finally told her.

“I understand. Again, you can marry Suzy whenever you want if you love her that much.” She turned to me this time, her eyes pleading. “But Amber, Krystal can't marry Minho.”

I sighed. “Like you said, you can only marry someone you really love. If that's the case for Minho and Krystal--

“Krystal isn't in love with him.”

“Why are you telling me this?”

“To let you know that Minho lied.” Her lips curved a bitter smile as she returned her gaze to the vast open sea. “To let you know that Krystal loves you, that she's in love with her memories with you, thinking that she spent those times with Choi Minho...”

I felt like I bit my own tongue that I didn't know how to respond. In fact, I was already informed beforehand of what Minho did. I was a volcano on the verge of eruption the first time I heard about it but this time I had nothing in mind but wishful thinking for Krystal not to remember anything. I didn't mind being a nobody in her life, I just wanted them to be happy.

You're doing fine so far, right Krys?

“And to let you know that she wasn't the one who gave up first. It was you.”

I shouldn't have come.

I was tired to death, tired of hoping and praying for Krystal to regain her memory so I could come back in her life. And when Yuri wrote to me about the truth, how my one hell of a bastard bestfriend rewrote Krystal's past and altered her memories that she actually spent with me, and how great help Minho had become in her speedy recovery, did I look like I have a choice but to set her free? I might had start a war in my previous life to deserve such an unimaginable pain. If not for Suzy, I might had lost my sanity. Why did everyone just keep uncovering an old wound and rubbing some salt in it? Why did they keep on boosting my hope up for a third chance with Krystal when obviously there's nothing left for us?

My tears were on the verge of breaking out that I had to look up at the sky to keep them from falling. I had accepted my ill fate with Krystal but I still couldn't help but get upset now that someone totally reminded me about it.

“She should've just said 'yes', noona.” I uttered, almost in whisper. Oh yes, Krystal could've just said 'yes'. That night, that single word alone could've changed our lives.

“You shouldn't have also said 'forever' when you didn't mean it.” That totally left me speechless. She gently patted my back and carefully removed my coat from her shoulders before wrapping it back around me. “They must be serving good wine at the after party. I'm going in first.”

Vic noona knew me well that she decided to leave me alone at the moment. I offered to walk her back or wear my coat at least but she insisted on going without it. “You might need it later,” she said before leaving.

I didn't know how long I was staring blankly at the sea with noona's words ringing inside my head.

'You shouldn't have also said 'forever' when you didn't mean it.'

'You shouldn't have also said 'forever' when you didn't mean it.'

Like a film in black and white, my mind went back to that night when I was kneeling in front of the woman I loved so much, offering her my heart and the rest of my life. That night when her eyes were filled with confusion as tears just flowed endlessly.

When I said 'I will love you forever', I meant it, Krystal. But noona's right, maybe I really didn't mean it. Because my forever with you ended when I gave up on you, on us.

I snapped out of my crazy thoughts as well as my heart almost dropped out when a pair of arms wrapped around my waist from behind.

“You look so handsome when you're in a deep thought.” That familiar voice.

I couldn't help but smile when Suzy revealed herself without removing her arms around me. My beautiful fiancée really had the habit of popping out of nowhere in times when I needed her. It's like she had implanted a chip inside me that would trigger a sensor everytime I felt sad or upset over something.

“I look handsome all the time,” I replied with a grin.

“Aish, conceited dork.”

I felt her arms loosened and found her working on her shoes, removing them. In a while, Suzy was already running along the shore like a happy child. Her laughter and innocent smiles as she played with the water washed my sad thoughts away.

“Amber! Come play with me!”

I just laughed, mesmerized by her cuteness. It was fun watching Suzy have the time of her life, she probably had never been to the beach for such a long time. Her expressions were contagious that I found myself smiling as she smiled, laughing as she laughed.

It seemed like Suzy dropped something when her smile turned into a frown and started looking close to her feet.

“Hey, what's wrong?” I asked.

“I think I lost my necklace,” she said, looking deeply worried.

“I'll take a look around here. It must be here somewhere,” I said as I joined her search for her missing necklace. I took out my phone and enlightened the water. Suzy looked so sad that I wanted to find it as soon as possible just to bring back the smile on her face.

“Mom gave it to me on my fifth birthday. I can't afford to lose it.” So that necklace was really that important. It was a gift from her late mother, I had to find it for her.

After a minute of searching, we finally found the necklace. I accidentally stepped on it before the waves took it away.

“You found it!” Suzy came running and attacked me with a hug. I felt relieved seeing her happy once again. “Thank you, thank you, thank you!” she said, showering my face with little kisses. “Can you please put it on for me?”

I didn't hesitate putting the necklace around Suzy's neck which fitted her perfectly. That moment, I didn't know why but my arms moved automatically around her from behind. Suzy seemed surprised by my gesture too but she responded by holding my hands that were resting on her waist.

“Are you tired?”

“Mmhmm.”

Suzy's cold hand caressed my cheek and guided my face to her shoulder. “You can always lean on me when you're tired.”

Strawberries. The air smelled like strawberries, that sweet intoxicating smell that I was once addicted to. It reminded me of someone who smelled like strawberry but loved mango instead.

“You changed your shampoo?”

“I didn't.” Suzy turned to me and cupped my cheeks, disappointment was all over her face. “Is something wrong with your nose again?”

Holy . Did I just smell something I wasn't suppose to smell? Like a person hearing voices and seeing things he wasn't suppose to see? I didn't know something could be wrong with my sense of smell after my broken nose operation. I could smell and breathe properly for the last twelve months, how could I be just experiencing it now.

“Oh, those eyebrows are curling again,” she said, straightening my brows with her thumbs. I was relieved when I saw her smile again and gave my nose a peck. “I thought you wouldn't notice. Jia gave me this green apple shampoo set, smells nice, doesn't it?”

“Uh, y-yeah. I love it,” I answered. But in my mind I was actually planning for a side trip to a doctor in Seoul for a check up.

“Sweet. It's getting cold. I think we should head back now.”

Like in autopilot mode, I pulled my coat and wrapped it around Suzy's bare shoulders. The little gesture earned an ear to ear smile from her. I found myself smiling when I realized what Victoria noona was supposed to mean when she returned my coat. She had figured out that Suzy would come looking for me. That's our Vic noona, I knew she was a psychic from the start.

“Why are you smiling?” Suzy asked.

“Nothing.” I tried suppressing my smile but it didn't work.

“Smiling for nothing is creepy, wifey.”

“Yah! Why are you calling me like that again?”

“Nothing, wifey.” She let out an evil laugh and stuck her tongue out.

“Yah, Bae Suzy. You can't call me that stupid nickname,” I warned her. Just imagining how my friends would look like once they heard it made me want to dig a hole already.

“Wifey, wifey, wifey!” Suzy could really troll sometimes but she was just too cute to resist. I attempted to tickle her but she managed to dodge quickly and ran away from me. “Wifey, wifey, wifey!”

“Oh don't you dare. I'll tickle you to death when I caught you.”

I took a step and the smell of strawberries filled the air once again. The scent was getting stronger and stronger as I took a step forward. From a distance, I saw Suzy stopped running. She stood there for a while before she dropped on her knees to attend someone. Someone else was there.

I came running like Lightning Flash towards them. My ears gone deaf, I didn't hear what my panicking fiancée said. All I did was pick up the girl lying unconscious on the beach sand and started running again.

The next thing I knew, I was holding her in a car's backseat, I didn't know if it's a taxi, someone else's car or actually my own car but it had to reach the hospital as fast as the speed of light. My heart was beating like crazy, whether out of nervousness or by just looking at her glorious face, I didn't care. I kept her safe in my arms until she was taken away from me by the nurses.

And I was left afloat by that familiar sweet scent.

Strawberries.
