FOURTEEN: On Teachers' Nerves “Stop it already!” You told Chanyeol as another piece of crumpled paper landed on your face. He had been throwing those things at you and Kai for a while now. You went to the restroom right after lunch to brush your teeth and do some other restroom stuff. People see them as though they’re some kind of hot celebrities but they’re actually just a bunch of derps, you laughed to yourself as you washed your hands. “Ya! You!” You spun around and saw Queen Choi So Yeon standing about ten steps away from you. You looked around and saw that you were the only people around. “Me?” You asked. “I suggest you don’t put yourself where you don’t belong,” she said. “I’m sorry, what?” “And is it true you’re Class D?” “Uhm, yeah?” “All the more pathetic,” she laughed. “Excuse me?” “I’m only gonna say this once,” she said as she came closer. You were standing face to face now, or rather she was glaring down at you since you were inches shorter. “If you’re smart enough, you’ll do what I say for your own good. Lowlifes like you should know where you stand.” “Wha –,” you didn’t get to say anything in response since she already started walking out, bumping you on the shoulders along the way.” “I didn’t even understand a thing she was saying,” you muttered as you rubbed your shoulders. You went back to your classroom feeling a little lost. Mr. Bae, your history teacher came shortly after to start hell class. “Here comes the demon king,” Chanyeol whispered behind you. “Page one hundred and four,” he said without bothering for greetings or introductions. You stood up from your seat to move your desk beside Kris’. “What are you still doing Song Joo Ri?” He asked in annoyance. “I’m sharing Wu Kris-sshi’s book sir,” you answered. “I know you are. Why didn’t you move your desk before the class started? Are you deliberately trying to disturb my class or don’t you have any common sense?” “Uhm, well, I wasn’t sure if we were using books today so I didn’t move my desk beforehand,” you reasoned. “She has a point, sonsaengnim,” Kai remarked. You gave a nervous look at him but he just stared at your teacher with a bored expression. “Oh, Kim Jong In, so good to see you again. You finally show up in class after three school days straight of being absent,” Mr. Bae remarked sarcastically. “I’m sorry, sonsaengnim. I was sick,” Kai explained without any sincerity. “Is that so? Show me your medical certificate,” Mr. Bae demanded. “I don’t have one,” Kai answered. “Well, too bad. You are not excused. Just four more absences and you’ll be kicked out of this class,” Mr. Bae said. You thought he sounded pleased. “Okay,” Kai just shrugged indifferently which made Mr. Bae more aggravated than he already was. Does this guy really want to be kicked out?! You were alarmed at Kai’s seemingly careless attitude especially when Mr. Bae was not just some teacher. He was the ‘demon king’ as Chanyeol had put it. “Then do everyone a favor. Since it doesn’t seem to matter to you, why don’t you work harder on your absences and save us the trouble of having you here,” Mr. Bae said. “Fine by me but sonsaengnim, I don’t think everyone shares your sentiments. See, they like me here, unlike someone I know who just loves to make everyone’s lives miserable,” Kai smirked. Your classmates gave Kai a horrified look while some were trying hard not to laugh. “Kai-ya,” you saw Sehun whisper as he worriedly tugged at Kai’s shirt from the back “Aish! This idiot,” Chanyeol murmured behind you while facepalming himself. You on the other hand, just stood there looking like an idiot, watching back and forth at Kai and your teacher. Mr. Bae looked like he was ready to devour Kai any moment now. “U-uhm teacher,” you interrupted. Mr. Bae and everyone’s attention now turned to you. “U-u-uhmm…” What now? You thought in panic. You never really had any intention to say anything, let alone throw yourself in the middle of their battlefield. Mr. Bae was looking more and more agitated by the moment. “Uhm, I’m sorry for not moving beforehand. This will not happen again. I’m moving now,” you bowed. “There’s no need,” he said icily. “We’re having a long quiz. I don’t want to see anything on your tables except for your pens and a sheet of paper! Number one!” Everyone hurriedly cleared their tables and rummaged for a piece of paper, including you. “…the place where the Renaissance took place. Number two, the century when it happened. Number three,” Mr. Bae said without waiting for the class to be ready or even giving a pause after each question. “Joo Ri,” Chanyeol poked you in panic. “What?!” You asked also in a panic since you were still scribbling your answer for number one but Mr. Bae was already throwing question number four. “Paper! Give me paper. Hurry!” Chanyol said. “Alright! Alright!” You murmured as you took a sheet of paper and handed it to Chanyeol. “Here.” “Thanks!” Chanyeol quickly took it. “No talking! Song Joo Ri and Park Chanyeol, thirty-point deduction!” Mr. Bae announced. “Number six!” What?! And thirty points! How long is this exam anyway? The exam lasted for the whole period, with a total of seventy five items. Mr. Bae immediately walked out of the room after collecting all the papers. Your classmates sighed at the end of hell period and groaned at the same time, probably because nobody was prepared for the exam, except perhaps for Kris who looked as calm as he ever did. You slumped on your table, feeling worse than down. “Thirty-point deduction, and I was only able to answer less than thirty items. I’ll get a negative score!” You groaned as you ruffled your bangs in misery. “It’s just one exam. There are still more to come,” Kai told you. “You! This is all your fault!” “What?” He simply said. “Don’t ‘what’ me,” you told him, massaging your temples. “I was trying to help you,” he told you. “D-don’t use me as an excuse for your rude behavior. Besides, I wasn’t asking for your help,” you retorted. “You’re welcome,” he answered. “Whatever,” you murmured and slumped back on your desk. Aish! What is it with these two? You groaned, referring to Kai and Chanyeol. If they keep this up, I’ll fail in no time. “Joo Ri –” “And you! Don’t talk to me,” you cut Chanyeol off. “And I’m not giving you paper the next time around so you better bring your own papers. Aish! Why can’t you two be like Sehun. He doesn’t get me into trouble.” “Seriously?! Did you just seriously say you want me to be like Sehun?” Chanyeol asked as though it was the most ridiculous thing he has ever heard. “Yes,” you answered matter-of-factly. “There must be something wrong with you! Why would you want me to be like Sehun? Can’t you see how awesome I am?” “Definitely not,” you answered. He looked at you incredulously. “It’s okay, hyung,” Sehun patted Chanyeol’s shoulder. “The truth really hurts but you’ll get over it.” “Shut up!” Chanyeol yelled. “Song Joo Ri, someone’s looking for you!” One of your classmates yelled. “Who?” You asked, but she just gave you a snob. You sighed and went to the door. It was Suho. “Ah, Joo Ri-sshi. I just came here to give you something,” he said. “No! I’m not receiving anything from you ever again! My legs are still hurting from yesterday’s event. Go find someone else,” you told him. “Aigoo. The event yesterday must have been really hard on you,” he scratched his head. “But this is not for an event.” “Yesterday you said the pin was just a welcome gift.” “Well, yeah. Hehehe. But really, this time is harmless. Here,” he said showing you a sheet of paper. “It’s a list of school clubs and a brief description of each one. Students here are required to join at least one club.” You suspiciously took the paper from him and browsed through the contents. “You can join as many clubs as you like, as long as it doesn’t get in the way of your studies and you can balance your club commitments. Please study that tonight and give me the list of clubs you are joining tomorrow.” “Oh, alright. Thanks then,” you said. “See you around,” he smiled and walked away. You went back to your seat and read through the list of clubs. You frowned in wonder which club you should choose. You were not really a ‘club person’ at your old school. You were not fond of extracurricular activities since you wanted to go home early to help your mom and read manhwas.. “What’s that?” Sehun asked. “A list of school clubs,” you answered. “Oh, right. You’re supposed to join a club.” “Why don’t you join our soccer club, Joo Ri?” Chanyeol said. “It’s men’s soccer club,” Kai reminded him. “Oh, right.” “Okay, everybody settle down. Sorry I’m late. I had to take care of something,” your teacher for next period came in. Class went on just like yesterday. Except for world history, the afternoon lessons were easier. The bell finally rang signifying the end of class. Time seemed to fly fast when you’re not struggling with your lessons. You were a little excited to head back to the dorms. Your homework for normal lessons are due the day after tomorrow since Wednesdays are intended for the special monster curriculum, so you have plenty of time to read manhwa tonight. You were about to walk out of the room but Kai held you by your backpack. “What?” You asked him. “Don’t tell me you’re ditching detention.” “Oh, right,” you muttered, facepalming in misery. “Well, they still have cleaning duties so let’s wait outside.” You, Sehun, Chanyeol and Kai went out together. “I’m going now. I have to go meet with Lu Han-hyung,” Sehun informed the three of you. “Alright, see you tomorrow,” you said. “Let’s go,” Kai said to Chanyeol. “Ya! Where are you two going?” You demanded. “We’re going to Sun class to tell Xiumin-hyung we’ll be late for practice,” Kai told you. “Did you say Sun class?” You asked. “Yep,” Chanyeol answered. “Can I go with you guys?” You asked. “Sure. And since we’re detention buddies, might as well stick together,” Chanyeol said while casually putting his arm around your shoulders. “I’m not your detention buddy! I’ll make sure not to get detention again,” you told him. “It’s not that bad,” Kai said while also putting his arm around you, squeezing you between the two of them, and started walking towards the direction of Sun class’ room. “How can detention be not bad,” you murmured but they just laughed at you. You reached Sun class. Kai peered inside to see if Xiumin and the rest are still there. “Dang! I’m so nervous. I hope he’s in a good mood,” Chanyeol fidgeted while looking nervously at the door. “Kai-sshi, can I help you?” queen Choi So Yeon appeared from the door. She was smiling appealingly but suddenly frowned when she saw you. “Is Xiumin-hyung still here?” Kai asked. “Yes, wait I’ll call him,” So Yeon smiled sw
