CHAPTER22
“What happened?” Kris asked as soon as Miah resurfaced from inside the hospital. Before she could answer though, Suho enveloped her in a tight thug. “Can’t. Breath,” she wheezed out. He immediately released her, but keeps his hands on the girls shoulders. “Sorry. I was just really worried. Are you okay?”
Clutching her side, Miah nodded, “So-so.” Then turning to Kris she answered his earlier question, “We need to go back to your car.”
“Why?” he asks.
“Getting out starts there,” she replies vaguely as she began to walk in the direction of the vehicle.
“Now what?” Kris interrupts the girls thoughts. She had been staring at Jae’s back who was squatting in front of a grave site at the side of the road. Apparently they had buried Junggie while she was passed it.
His grave marker were a pile of Smooth black rocks they found along the road. On the top one written in silver sharpie was: Il Jung Hwa. Loving brother and friend.
It was slightly generic, but Miah didn’t think anything could have described him better.
Blinking away the image of her friends back, she turn to the guys. “Look through your things and take out anything that’s really important to you.”
“Okayyy,” he says skeptically. The three of us, besides Jae, begin to dig through our belongings, taking out only significant items.
Kris laid out a ratty hat, car keys, his wallet, and a cross-shaped necklace. Suho chose a t-shirt, his wallet, and a pair of shoes. Miah put down her wallet, a ring the twins gave her on her birthday, and a diary.
She started with her own things. Alessa had said something meaningful was needed. Something that could replace a life lost. Her diary will due she decided. It was practically her life. She moved it off to the side and threw the rest back in her luggage.
Next was Kris. “What do each of these things mean to you?” Miah asked. “Why?” he questions puzzled. “Just humor me.”
He gives the girl an odd look, but obliges. “The keys because I mean, how else will I get into my apartment when we get back. My wallet because it holds my ID and money. The hat because it’s my lucky hat.” “Lot of luck it’s brought you,” Jae mumbles joining them. He glares, “I’m alive aren’t I?” Everyone winces at his bad choice of words.
After a moment of silence Miah mumbles, “And the necklace?” He looks at it a moment, tumbling it in his palm. “It was a gift. From my late cousin. Well not really a gift. He was wearing it when he died. My aunt gave it to me to remember him by.” She nodded, a feeling of elation entering her body. That was it. A life taken while wearing it will do. “May I see it?” she asks. He hesitates from a moment, but nods and hands it to her. She clutched it safely next to her diary.
“Do I need to do this too?” Jae asks. “No, there’s no need,” Miah replied. “Why not?” she asks confused. Miah ignore her though and turn to Suho. “What about you. Any meaning behind your items?” He gazes down at them, “The t-shirt is my brothers. I thought he might want it back since I didn’t tell him I was borrowing it. My wallet for the same reason as Kris. And the shoes because their my favorite pair.”
Miah frowned. “That’s all? You don’t have anything more significant? Something you hold close to your heart.” “Why? What is this all about?” Jae interrupts. Sighing, Miah realized it was time to tell them.
“Alessa told me that the only way we can leave Silent Hill is if we leave something worth a life in our place.” “What does that mean?” Jae asks confused. Showing her diary and the necklace Miah answered, “I’ve kept this diary for a year. It has everything and anything I thought was important. Including my dreams and aspirations. It is practically a part of me. In essence it’s a piece of my life. As for Kris’ necklace; well since his cousin wore it when he died it holds a piece of his life. It’s a symbol of a life lost.”
“What about me? You said I didn’t need to go through my things,” Jae asks confused. Miah nodded an affirmative. “
