Engaged
Before The Dawn“So, we’re back,” Sungyeol said, whistling happily. He looked around the park. It had changed so much in the 5 years. Most of the trees were cut down and the benches had been remodeled.
“Even the air seems familiar here,” Myungsoo said, inhaling deeply. “All the memories. I missed you guys.”
“We never came to this park after you left,” Howon said, combing his hair with his fingers. There was a silver glint on his ring finger.
“What’s that, you got engaged?” Myungsoo shouted, forcing Howon to show him the ring. Howon smiled shyly, looking at Woohyun, who scratched his head. Sungyeol looked from Howon to Woohyun.
“What the hell guys? What are you hiding?” Sungyeol asked.
“Hey, don’t get mad Sungyeol,” Howon said quietly. “I mean, it was so sudden that—”
Woohyun blurted out, “I wanted to inform you guys but Howon didn’t want you two to know so soon…”
Sungyeol’s eyes dropped to Woohyun’s hand and surely enough, on his ring finger, there was a silver ring.
“I don’t believe you guys!”Myungsoo exclaimed, looking at Sungyeol worriedly. “You couldn’t tell us once? And Sungjong too.”
“Sungjong doesn’t know,” Howon said in a guilt-ridden voice. “I-we were confused about how to break the news to you. And Sungyeol you made all of us promise that we wouldn’t get engaged without letting all of us know but—”
“Congrats,” Sungyeol said lamely.
“I knew you would be disappointed Sungyeol, it just happened so quickly and…”
“Forget it. It’s ok. Let’s-let’s go back.” Sungyeol shrugged.
Back to the beginning, hopefully.
Woohyun was avoiding his eyes.
Why Woohyun? Why?
Howon and Woohyun had thrown a ‘Welcome Back’ party for Myungsoo, Sungyeol and Sungjong in the garden of Sungyeol’s mansion. A lot of people were invited, even some of their old school friends. Sungyeol downed glass after glass of whiskey, and barely talked.
Howon and Woohyun were moping around while Myungsoo was sulking. None of them were in mood for the party.
“What’s wrong?” Sungjong asked Howon. He told him the story.
Sungjong was shocked.
“What? You’re not joking?”
Howon shook his head.
“You could at least let them know,” Sungjong said reproachfully.
“I was scared. It was so sudden.”
“What’s done is done, now go apologize.”
“You’re right.” Howon got up from his seat and looked around for Sungyeol. He spotted him sitting at the bar. He started towards him but his legs failed. He saw Woohyun passing and called out to him.
“You should talk to him, he always listened to you.”
Woohyun raised an eyebrow.
“As far as I remember, all we ever did was fight.”
“You know what I mean.” Howon pouted.
“Aigoo, our Hobaby pouted. He looks so cute.” Woohyun pinched his cheek.
“Just go.”
“Alright. Stop shoving me.”
Woohyun strolled towards Sungyeol.
“Want to go to the greenhouse?” Woohyun asked.
“No thanks, I’m not feeling very touchy-feely towards plant life at the moment.” Sungyeol made a face.
“I heard it worked for Myungsoo and Sungjong. Maybe it will work for us too.”
“I don’t see how.” Sungyeol yawned.
“Come on,” Woohyun insisted.
“Howon might think something wrong. Besides what do you have to say?”
“Howon knows it all so just get your lazy but off of the stool.”
Sungyeol reluctantly followed Woohyun out of the room. Howon saw it from the corner of his eye but pretended not to. Myungsoo was hugging Sungjong from the back with a mournful expression. He didn’t socialize while Sungjong did both of their jobs. Howon heard a loud laughter and saw Dongwoo joking with Sunggyu. He was holding his stomach and rocking tipsily while Sunggyu shot him slightly disgusted looks.
A shy smile lit up Howon’s face.
